Red Rooster Harlem Ratings and Reviews
We arrived at the Red Rooster early anticipating a night filled with gastronomic delights. A stop at the bar for two dark and stormiest eased the chill of a cold winter night. The mussel pot offered a tangy curry and coconut treat. The “yardbird” royale so tender and spicy delicious. The staff was friendly and very attentive.Don’t be turned away by upscale pricing because the dining experience was worth it.
I met up with some old friends at Red Rooster this week. First, I was super excited to get a reservation since it had been on my list for a while. Red Rooster did not disappoint! We got the crab cakes and cornbread for appetizers and they were fantastic. The cornbread was made like a loaf, buttered and griddled. It was served with more butter and a great tomato compote. The crab cakes were awesome too - freash any meaty without filler.
For a main, we got the yard bird royale which was presented with a giant flaming sparkler - quite the spectacle. It was then carved and ready to eat. Delicious - some of the best fried chicken I've had! It was served with a mac an cheese that had some collard greens inside. I'm not usually a big mac and cheese guy, but this was great! I'm not doing a good enough job describing how good everything was. Every part of the meal was made so well - highly recommended.
I go to Red Rooster every time I’m in NY and have been there 6-8 times over the last few years. I would generally give it 5 stars in every category. Tonight... not so much!
The ambience, the bartenders, the drinks and the music were all just as incredible as always. Our server was also very good and attentive with the appropriate amount of conversation and discretion.
Where things go off the rails starts with the greeter. She essentially dismissed us as we stood waiting for her to even say hello. I had to get her to acknowledge us even though we were standing directly in front of her.
The food, which is why you go to a restaurant just wasn’t up to par. I have traveled all around the world and I frequently tell everyone that Red Rooster is one of my favorites places to eat. But tonight, the Mac and Greens literally had zero greens. Which is core to the dish because the mac and cheese is seasoned (I’m guessing) to have the extra punch of the greens. I normally love this dish, but not tonight. The Brussel sprouts were very excessively cheesy and creamy. I couldn’t get through more than half of the dish, it was just way too much! The cornbread was good though. 😏
I hope their leadership reads this and finds a way to meet with the staff and review their processes, people and food. I don’t want to have to find a new Thursday night spot on my frequent trips to NYC!
We met friends visiting from California and I’ve been wanting to go to Red Rooster. It really is must go to place! Wait staff were on us like white in rice. Energy level was pumped up. Maybe just a smidge too loud as you cannot have a conversation. Couple of things - we felt rushed along. Would have liked a drink first rather than ordering apps - oh! And then maybe a drinker poo! I ordered ribs which I would say were fair. The potato chip app was awesome. I think it best to order their yardbird (chicken) very good. Would go back but my husband says - for lunch.
We had excellent time at Red Rooster. The wait staff was very kind, thoughtful and considerate. We had some dietary restrictions and the waitress went above and beyond to check and make sure there were no hidden ingredients as well. We shared the crabcake and chicken & waffle appetizers. They were absolutely delicious. Our entrees were good (Lamb Bolognese & Jerk Chicken), but not as delicious as the appetizers. Overall we spent a pretty penny but it was totally worth every dime. There was also an amazing live band playing that really brought up the energy of the space and had me dancing in my seat while eating. Highly recommend!
Our meal was great. the service was very good. we started with delicious cocktails and then split the cornbread (love it toasted) and the crab cakes. 3 of us split the yardbird & the dumplings. The actual dumplings were the weakest part of a DELICIOUS dish. The boneless fried chicken was amazing. Ended with the so tasty panacotta. Unfortunately, the meal did not agree with me. This happens if the oil is not as fresh as it could be. Despite that, I would say I would go again & so should you!
Sadly, Red Rooster has become a mixed bag, a big change from its early days, when the energy and spirit was amazing. Greeters perfunctorily ask you to "wait at the bar" with no offer to take coats, leaving you bundled up. There is a jaded quality perhaps from having so many throngs of tourists coming in. Still, the maitre d' very kindly give me a 3-top corner table when I pushed for it due to a friend's hearing issue (it was very early and I assured her we did not plan to hang out).
Wait service was "good enough". Food very good.
Disappointed that there were no collard greens on the menu at a time when collards are great.
Leftovers I took home turned out to be someone else's.
First time and celebrating a birthday. The ambiance was awesome (sometimes too loud that we couldn't communicate with the waitress), the fried chicken was amazing but some of the other items that we ordered were not as tasty or were too spicy for our taste.
Absolutely delicious. Went for family jazz brunch with my teenage children. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Portions were huge. I split the burger and a pair salad with my daughter and we were more than full enough. Men mostly had chicken which was delicious. They brought a plate of complementary grits to the table Which meant we left completely sated. You have to try the bloody Mary’s they are delicious
