We always enjoy this local gem of a restaurant for lunch in the lovely Vermont village of Woodstock about an hour and a half from our summer home in Dorset. The food is superior and the service the best. Our server Koreen was amazing. She was on top of everything like a true professional. We each started with a cup of tomato bisque (non-dairy) and my lunch partner had the burger and fries (no bread or cheese) and I had a classic wedge salad with roasted chicken ... apples, red onions and walnuts complemented the local blue cheese ranch dressing ... ever so delicious. We enjoyed wine by the glass: a Napa chardonnay and an Italian Barbera from Piedmontese. This is a destination restaurant in the centuries old Woodstock Resort Inn where an overnight stay would complete a fabulous lunch or dinner. The roaring fireplace in the main lobby is a beautiful antique feature of the resort in the winter season when the frost is on the pumpkins adorning the front porte cochere and courtyard.

We couldn’t have been happier going there , the food was prepared differently from many other places and couldn’t have been happier! Very tasty and the portions were perfect . I enjoy eating and my wife and I split all the plates and we were both full and satisfied by the end of the meal.

We had a very disappointing experience at Red Rooster and not at all what we expected at The Woodstock Inn. My chicken was overcooked and fairly bland (yet pricey), our server seemed completely disinterested in us, and we had an unfortunate conversation with the manager as we were leaving. My husband and I both noticed that all of the dining room staff (bartenders, servers, food runners, and managers) were all male. We were curious as to why that might be so. I've worked in resort towns where it's harder to find female staff and we've also dined in historic hotels where they keep an old school tradition of male staff in the dining areas. We asked one of the managers on the way out why they had only male staff, and his response was a defensive, "Are you accusing us of being sexist?!" We were shocked at both his tone and his actual response. As I tried to explain that there are many reasons that this might be and we were just curious as to what was driving their decision, he literally started laughing at us and explained that they had "two beautiful women workers" that just happened to be in the other restaurant that night and that that is "just the way the cookie crumbles." In all honesty, we've never been treated with such disrespect and non-professionalism from a worker at any store or restaurant. He continued to laugh at us as we walked out - so much so that I had to turn around and say, "It wasn't that funny of a question!" It appears that he might be defensive about that question for a reason. This restaurant's food is not worth the money. I would also not recommend giving business to an establishment that has not trained their staff in professional communication and basic courtesy.

My husband and I were looking forward to dinning at the Red Rooster, it was nothing great in fact it was a big disappointment. The food was C minus at best, I would never go back there again and I would not recommend it. Tonight we’re going to the Prince and the Paiper hopefully that restaurant can save Woodstocks reputation.

The Red Rooster was cozier than expected as well as more casual for dress. I’m thankful for the heads up from Open Table on the dress code. We devoured the Chicken Liver Mousse for an appetizer: it arrived timely. For my entree, I chose the Beet Salad and added the option of the NY Strip steak. The steak arrived separately from the salad and sliced in thick cuts—not as I had envisioned it being plated but it didn’t affect the flavors. The steak was tougher than I’d like but it was cooked to my asking. Slicing it thinly could have helped the tenderness…. My husband enjoyed the Butcher’s cut special steak with potatoes. There wasn’t a morsel left on the plate. Dessert was disappointing but it was our own fault. We chose not to go with our waiter’s recommendation. The round cocoa crisp in the Chocolate Wheel lacked flavor as well as the butterscotch ganache. Its ice cream, though, rose to the occasion. Several of the cookie offerings on the Cookie Plate lacked flavor and they tasted day-old or older. The Lintzer stood out, though. As a parent of four, I’m pretty tolerant of kids in restaurants. But a parent beside us allowed her kindergartner to whine and argue for most of our entree—not the restaurant’s fault but the atmosphere nor the menu lends itself to youngsters. When you pay $$$$ for a meal, it’s expected the atmosphere should match. Our server Stephen was attentive, very knowledgeable of the menu and courteous. Of our weeklong trip to New England it was one of our favorite meals minus the whine.
