About Red Rooster at The Woodstock Inn and Resort
Located inside the Woodstock Inn and Resort, the Red Rooster restaurant is a AAA Four Diamond Award winning restaurant with tasty dishes and a relaxed setting. The Red Rooster provides the Vermont atmosphere and charm while drawing menu inspiration from the local New England farmers and fishermen.
Specialty dishes prepared by the team at Red Rooster include spiced loin of tuna with gingered kuri squash, pan roasted filet of beef with oyster mushrooms in a cognac reduction and butter poached Maine lobster tail with basmati rice, pea succotash and tarragon nage. Very pleasant setting, with neutral decor. Careful and conscientious service. Perhaps not the most exciting place to eat in Woodstock, but certainly a good option, especially if you are staying at the Woodstock Inn. We enjoyed our dinner very much, especially the chilled pea soup and the white chocolate olive oil cake.
We have been going to the Woodstock Inn for over 40 years. Their service was slow and without any communication from the waiter. The food was very good, but it was annoying to wait without any information on the time frame. The breakfast on Sunday was only a buffet, no other offering which was not useful when we just wanted a muffin and coffee. They need to have alternatives for the cost of the accommodations.
The front staff was nasty and arrogant when we asked them to move our table. They told us all other tables for four were taken. When I objected they put usual one of those tables. We arrived at 6:15 and left at 7:45. There were still empty table for 4s when we left.

We very much enjoyed the appetizer special which was a sour dough toast with goat cheese, beets, arugula and balsamic dressing. Delicious and so fresh. Our filets were cooked as requested, medium rare. Sides were good too. Server (Vinny) was professional, nice and timed out dinner very well.
The Woodstock Inn has never had luck with restaurants (been dining there off and on for 40 years), but I had high hopes for the Red Rooster and its beautiful decor. Food and service did not live up to the decor's promise, however.
Menu is very limited (what you see online is exactly what they have to offer) and the "daily special" was lobster bisque which our server told us "is fine for everyone to eat. Has nothing in it. No gluten. No dairy. Everyone can eat it. Nothing in it." Wut?
Ordered veg kabob on couscous -- simple, easy to prepare, quick to cook -- how could they mess it up? The Red Rooster figured it out! Take 3 kinds of veggies that have been in the crisper until they are unrecognizable: 3 mushrooms recycled from a NASA experiment, lots of cut up chunks of old red onion, and a few cubes of green pepper; then skewer them on a little stick, hold them above a lit match and toss on top of couscous. Then have mister surly guy -- whose time you are clearly wasting because his interests lie with cute teenagers at outdoor table -- serve this plate of compost. Maybe there's nothing in any of the restaurants food.

Even though we've had unremarkable meals at the Inn in the past (none as bad as this one, tho), we decided to try it again because we didn't want to wait in line at Simon Pearce up the road. That was a mistake that I won't make again.
We were unsure about having dinner at our "hotel" instead going outside the property. Good thing we didn't the food was amazing. Super fresh garden vegetables, veal chop to die for and salmon that could not have been any better. Presentation...5 star, taste...5 star, service...5 star !
The server made a mistake in the ingredients of one salad entree, and when it was determined that in fact the item was not entirely gluten free, the manager not only comp'd the replacement entrée, but also gave us a free dessert. We ate on the balcony looking over the Inn courtyard, under the shade of a tall oak tree, on a beautiful summer day, so it was quite lovely. Not crowded for lunch usually, esp. during the weekday, reservation probably wasn't necessary, but it did mean they saved an outdoor table for us, which was nice.
I loved the Oysters Rockefeller for appetizer. They were delicious and attractive in their presentation. The rack of lamb was also very good. These are both dishes that are my favorites that I don't often see on restaurant menus so it was a real treat. The wine we selected did not really pair well with the dishes. Is was a Chianti Classico.
Local, interesting dishes thoughtfully prepared and beautifully plated. Appetizers, entrees and desserts were all fantastic. Perfect portions, nice wine list, and fabulous service. Our waiter overheard us talking about books and brought us a list of similar suggestions. A lovely evening!
My daughter and her boyfriend dined at Red Rooster to celebrate his Dartmouth graduation and they said it was truly the "best meal they had ever had!" They loved the oysters, the gnocchi, the filet of beef, the rack of lamb and the exquisite dessert that was like a pudding/cake. Everything about their meal and dining experience was so special and they can't wait to come back for another special occasion!
The great service started days before my visit with the automated reservation system, which even allowed me to request a special table -- in my case, a table by the window. Our table was ready the moment we walked in, and the server was both attentive and understanding of our wish to take our time, chat, and dine at our leisure. The food across the board was delicious and even better than I remembered from a visit last winter. Then, when we were ready to leave, our check came quickly, allowing us both to pursue busy afternoons. While the prices are not low, they are absolutely within reason, especially given the quality of the dishes served.
The Inn has a garden where the kitchen is able to get fresh salad and vegetable ingredients. I think the chef falls flat here trying to make unusual sauces and dishes. I would have much preferred to taste the ingredients rather than to have them masked. I also thought my cocktail was undrinkable which they replaced with a requested glass of white wine. I would not return for dinner.
Breakfast was decent but it is a mystery why this restaurant (and hotel) has such awful coffee. When I requested an iced latte I got a glass of watered down milk with absolutely no taste of coffee which I returned. Considering the daily rates, they should step up their game here.
Good bland food but truly skimpy portions. Either order two entrees or plan on a trip to the White Cottage for something to fill you up afterward. This is Vermont, not some nose in the air city restaurant where they gut your wallet and call it gourmet. Had a killer breakfast at a small place downtown the next morning that made this highbrow locale look sad. So, if you think you are a foodie who values presentation over all, certainly take in the Red Rooster. But if you are looking for real food for real people, look elsewhere in town. This will never be mistaken for New Orleans!

Especially the duck, which was amazing. Our server was somewhat less than cheerful, but was not rude and did her job. Overall I would recommend this restaurant for a nice night out
I think my expectations were too high from all my friends talking it up. The food was good and plated nicely, but I think Pine at Hanover Inn and Simon Pearce are better. The food didn't blow me away, but it was very pricey. The decor and tables were ok, but the atmosphere was a bit bare bones considering the price tag, I thought. Wait staff was great and it was nice and quiet. And we had a lovely table by the beautiful bay windows. I'd say the windows were the highlight of the evening.
During the renovations 3/21/16 the regular dining area is closed. The temporary dining area is just meh. Which is why there was a lower score on ambiance. However, the food is not under a rehab, nor should it be. Its a great dining experience. Never not loved it.
We usually love this restaurant but the last visit wasn't great. I ordered a beef carpaccio as an appetizer. The beef wasn't seasoned at all and the sauce wasn't well integrated into the dish. The greens that were on the side didn't have any dressing or olive oil. Everything on a dish must be well seasoned. The sea bass special was good but the rice was undercooked. We will go back again on our next visit to VT because we've had wonderful meals at this restaurant in the past and should give it a second chance.
We love visiting Woodstock and especially the Woodstock Inn. The Red Rooster restaurant is located inside the Inn and provides everything you would want in a great restaurant. The ambience is a mix of modern and classic. Very appealing. The mood it sets is relaxing and peaceful with just a touch of upscale. It is kind of like the spa that is at this Inn.
The food quality is excellent. My last dinner was a steamed halibut served over a bed of chorizo, shrimp and rice. Outstanding. It was essentially a paella.
We have also eaten breakfast here several times and the results are always the same. Delightful.
My husband and I enjoyed a delicious dinner last weekend at the Red Rooster. We both ordered the special, pan seared Dover sole pan with a crab cake. It was very tasty! The service was excellent. We also enjoyed the breakfast buffet two mornings and it was wonderful. There was a large selection of fresh fruit, made to order omelettes, scrambled eggs, French toast and waffles. I'd recommend it to anyone.
The food was very good. We had the braised short rib and the halibut. Service was very good and attentive. Appetizer options we surprisingly limited. A few salads, but nothing that jumped off the menu. Wine selection was good and prices reasonable. The restaurant is right off the lobby and very busy and bright. A lively setting but I wouldn't recommend for a quiet dinner for two.
The food was delicious and the space was cozy and attractive. The tap list is small but included a great Burlington Beer option, Folk Metal Stout. My only complaint was that the restaurant was very quiet when we were dining, but for some reason the staff seated a family with 2 active children (read banging the shared seat back around) in the booth directly behind us, a couple clearly on a date. When 80% of the tables are empty, why not give guests a little more privacy?
We stayed at the Inn last week and ate three of our four meals there. The breakfast buffet was excellent and a great value. Lunch was lovely and we were excited to see they had a kids' menu for our boys. Dinner was a little pricey, but had wines at great prices and a very memorable seafood stew. We dine out quite a bit at home in NYC and the Red Rooster stands out for its farm to table food and beautiful setting. I am missing the Red Rooster already!
I took my family for Christmas dinner, our waitress was awful. We felt ignored. We constantly were looking for someone to assist with empty glasses or other missing items. We ordered after dinner drinks that we could see were sitting on the service bar but we never received. She even tried to charge us for them. To make matters worse there were children running and yelling in the restaurant, and I mean running. Food was OK, not great and portions were small. If you want a nice relaxing dinner one where you can be taken care of while you enjoy a nice meal and visit with family DON'T GO HERE.
