Red Room Cafe Ratings and Reviews
Consistently excellent, mostly traditional, Italian, with a few great additions like the chicken with prosciutto and provolone with sautéed spinach. All homemades, and the gravy (sauce for the uninitiated), is south-Philly authentic. Bronzino and veals (have had the chop-parmegianed-fabulous! And the Marsala-super), fresh, delicious and mouth watering. And the paparadelle! Mmmmh!! BYO makes the reasonable pricing that much more so. Great spot. Love it. Back regularly. Can't say enough good things.
We went to the Red Door Cafe with high expectations as a party of 2. It's a very pretty place. We had the worst table in the restaurant, sitting next to the computer where all of the waitstaff gathered to complain. The food was ordinary except for the fabulous homemade bread. The home made pasta was the reason we came to eat here, but after they delivered it we waited and waited for the waiter to bring some cheese. My meal was the fettuccine with pancetta, peas, and mushrooms, but I counted a scant three tiny pieces of pancetta that were tough and inedible. I found the price of $24. for pasta with 3 tiny pieces of pancettta overpriced. It seemed the busboys were more personable and helpful than the waiters.
After recently going to many restaurants with poor service and mediocre food, we were pleasantly surprised with our experience at Red Room. We were a party of six, and everyone was pleased with their meal. Service was attentive, which is rare for a July 4th weekend. We will definitely return.
We had dinner with family from out of town and they were very impressed. He's Italian and they said the food was great. They judge an Italian restaurant by the meatballs and they passed with flying colors! Everyone enjoyed their meal, except I would avoid the pasta fra diavolo with long hots. Way, way too hot for consumption. Otherwise, the food was great, the service was great, and there was a fun buzz in the room. +
Not usually down on a Friday evening, but was lucky to snag an early reservation I am never disappointed here.
Regular menu is fresh and well prepared. Specials are well thought out. Had the lamb chop special. Received four double lollipop lamb chops. PERFECTLY cooked to medium rare. So few kitchens can actually hit that sweet spot. Pink, not raw. Seasoning was flavorful but didn't overwhelm the flavor of the tender lamb.
The atmosphere is so friendly. You really feel like you dropped by a friend's place. After preparing the food for a table, I think the owner sat down to eat his dinner with a the couple at that table. No hype, no flash. Just a nice guy eating dinner with friends who also happen to be customers. The vibe here is unusual. Comfortable but not shabby. High quality but not snooty. Love it!
This is the 3rd time we have eaten here. We have enjoyed all three dinners. Ordered were Seafood with Linguini (the pasta was a little underdone as it just came out of the extruder), Gnocchi with Marinara (firm with great gravy), Veal with Seafood (2 thick medallions, not pounded flat. Would have been nice if they had asked how I wanted it done!) Then we bought dried pasta and marinara at the farmers market and enjoyed another dinner.
The service was excellent, our water was always filled and everyone was helpful and explained any questions we had about the menu. The food was outstanding, all homemade and authentic. We ate every bite of everything we ordered! Homemade pasta was excellent, highly recommend!!
Menu appears to be good, but the actually food not so much. Party of 4 and only one person enjoyed their meal. Ordered the "housemade fusilli in vodka sauce" and was served over cooked boxed rotini in a burnt marinara. Fish special was definitely frozen, not fresh. Veal entree was overlooked and again not fresh. Had I been eating this meal at the Olive Garden it would have been okay, not something you'd expect in a small family owned restaurant and certainly not what you'd expect to pay $200.00 for.
We went on Mother's Day for a 6pm reservation , so it was very hectic getting in due to the small dining area, but the staff was doing a good job considering, and they were all friendly.
Food was fresh and well prepared. We all agreed it was some of the better Italian food that we have had in a while. My only complaint would be the portions on the gnocchi. It seems more of an appetizer portion and for $20 was a little overpriced and I was still left with an appetite .
They offered complimentary cannolis for Mother's Day for my mother and wife and both agreed they were delicious!! I had a cappuccino that was also well made and was a nice finish to the meal.
Overall it was a good experience and a nice place to go for Mother's Day. We would definitely return, however, due to the size probably at an hour slightly off the dinner rush.
Mothers Day dinner, picked because of the reviews and over all rating. The owner created us and was very nice. They got pretty busy with only one visible waiter and back up staff so he didn't really check in on us however the over all experience was very good. We ordered the halibut which was one of the specials and it was seated to perfection. Three appetizers mussels in white which we requested spicy but not delivered spicy . We were given red pepper flakes, the mussels were large and the wine sauce flavorful! The escargot, very delicious and well prepared. The grill calamari, shrimp and octopus . We will dine here again.
We were a party of seven. Ordered salads and entrees . Most of the entrees were good. One entree never made it out till a few of us were almost done and one party member was completely finished. The restaurant offered us a cannoli for this inconvenience. Eating while someone is still waiting for their entree ruins the experience . Charging me for it , is not only CHEAP but insulting. We didn't want the free cannoli thrown at us
For the South Jersey shore, food is above average. Three of us had seafood, two salmon and bruschetta dishes, which were beautiful. I had swordfish, which was small, but good. One person, who is a chicken parm aficionado, said it was good but not great. Overall, above average for the Shore. BYOB.
What a wonderful meal. I had the eggplant stacker and the chicken Vicenzo. They each had wonderful and creative flavors that showed the chef cared. The owners and staff are very welcoming and make it seem like you are going to your grandma's home in South Philly for Sunday dinner. My friend had the chicken parm with pasta and meatballs. He said his meal was outstanding.
We went to the café during restaurant week and I was pleased with the menu selection. It was not restricted to three meal choices as the entire menu was available and the choices outside the restaurant week specials were limited. The waiters were very attentive even with pouring the wine although we brought a bottle as required. The pork chop was fried to perfection and the shrimp and crab were fresh.
