Red Ox Inn Ratings and Reviews
The Red Ox Inn is our go to place for special occasions. It was our first date, the Valentines day menu and wine pairing was fantastic, and most recently, we were just there for my partners birthday.
We are expecting our first little one in April, and I wanted to surprise the hubby with a gender reveal while we were our for his birthday supper. I called ahead to inquire if we could bring our own gender reveal cake into the restaurant and have them bring it out when we order dessert.
They were more that happy to accommodate our request and executed the surprise perfectly!
It is so nice when places aren't governed by a strict rule book and will go out of their way to help you with a special occasion.
We love this place!
Oh, and the food, wine, service is all fantastic!
It's a very small restaurant, the menu is relatively small as well but the food is amazing. I can see the value of quality over quantity here. We had great service and our server was very knowledgeable about the dishes. We had the scallop for an appetizer. It was so good and had so many layers of flavour. My husband ordered the beef and I had the lamb for our main. The beef was cooked to perfection, super tender and full of flavor. The lamb was just as delicious and tender. To finish, I would definitely recommend the bread pudding for dessert.
We are new to Edmonton, and this small restaurant was recommended to us, so we headed off - across town. The food was marvelous and the service was personal. We were made to feel like regulars and very special.
This is a perfect restaurant to walk to and have an intimate meal - but we do not live nearby. So our only regret is that the Red Ox Inn is not in our neighborhood. We would be going there regularly if it was ...
Thanks for a wonderful meal!
It was ok. Food was good, but not worth $35-40 a plate. We like excellent food, but felt that a large part of the price was driven by pretention rather than value or quality. Service felt pretentious and neglectful. Likely won’t be back in light of what else is available in Edmonton.
Too bad everything on the menu sounds incredible. The pork belly was amazing for an appetizer and the duck....well let me say I never have had that many flavours on a duck breast. It was delicious. As for dessert again you can’t go wrong with any choice you make.
The food was excellent, although a little pricey. They have a great wine selection. The food has many local ingredients, they have a small menu with the idea being to do a small menu well, instead of having many options that are just average. Service was great, polite, friendly, not overly intrusive. I would definitely recommend it.
The Red Ox has been our go-to favourite for special occasions for years. It never disappoints — the food is always perfectly prepared & presented and the service is always well-paced — and our latest visit to celebrate my wife's birthday was no exception. The room is small so reservations are pretty much a must and therein lies the rub: do we tell others about Red Ox and risk not being able to get in ourselves? Unfortunately, we enjoy it so much we feel obliged to spread the word.
Great restaurant in a very unique location...a little gem tucked away in a residential area of Edmonton...the menu is always changing; so I try to visit when in town...menu is limited; which is a good thing...everything is fresh and tasty...definitely recommend!
The restaurant itself was very nice. Our server was alright but also somewhat arrogant and at times almost condescending.
I wanted to order the soup that was on the menu but was informed that they had run out of that soup so I order the shrimp appetizers that was either $14 or $16 instead. I order the $49.00 steak for supper and did not even eat half of my meal (as my mushrooms were sour and bitter, tasted bad, and the waiter commented on this and actually laughed but did not offer to do anything about it. Someone else at our table ordered the same thing and their mushrooms were very good so I know it was the mushrooms and not us) so asked to have my meal packed up to go. When the waiter brought the bill he told me he accidentally "tossed my supper in the garbage" and took off my $14.00 appetizer in lieu of throwing out half of my $49.00 supper.
Very disappointed in my experience at the Red Ox Inn and do not see myself every going back.
The food was exception the evening we went to the Red Ox Inn. My husband had the prawns for a starter and I enjoyed the beet salad. Both dishes were delicious. For our main courses, my husband had the strip loin and I ordered the gnocci. My husband said the steak was cooked to perfection and the potatoes were excellent. The gnocci were tender and complimented by mushrooms in a butter sauce.
Was very impressed with the quiet setting, small venue and excellent presentation. Did not feel rushed or over served.
Quiet presence of waiting staff was a nice change from the forced over exuberance you sometimes get at dining establishments.
Definitely a five star experience!
We visited on a Sunday evening, quiet inside, some nice music playing in the background. They have a decent beer selection, including a local Alberta beer I have not had before. Dinner was excellent, well prepared, very tasty, some nice sauces to compliment. Desert was really great too. Our service was simply excellent.
Four of us went there on a Friday night and everyone ordered something different. We, of course, shared a bit of the appetizers, entrees & desserts and were very impressed. Our waiter was excellent and accommodating. All in all a wonderful evening and a return visit is warranted
I have to admit Red Ox Inn does not immediately come to my mind when pondering a dining destination. Attended a few days ago with friends and we were all blown away with the quality and inventiveness of the food. It’s a very small space that could use a bit of panache but comfortable and we enjoyed the little nook we were seated in. Waitstaff Kim was stellar and we all thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Will definitely be going back!
The Red Ox Inn was a special experience for myself and my date. We enjoyed exceptional and friendly experience from Darren and the food was wonderful. It's a small menu but very well done with great ingredients and taste. I would definitely recommend the Red Ox Inn for any occasion.
Obvious care and attention to detail in the kitchen. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal all of which were cooked to perfection and presentation was excellent. Service was very good as well, just enough attention to make it a memorable evening. We'll be back...
I came to celebrate my birthday, and was very impressed with my main course.
The appetizers were nice, however the portions were relatively small. I ordered the pork belly, and as tasty as it was I didn't think the portion was worth the pricing. I had recently ordered a pork belly appetizer from a restaurant in New York, and although the restaurant had a Michelin star and was twice the price, I had to compare and wasn't as impressed. The beet salad was also very tasty, but all in all next time I would order different appetizers or none at all.
The main courses on the other hand were amazing. At our table we ordered the beef, duck, halibut and gnocchi and were not disappointed. The portions excellent and flavour profiles amazing. I would definitely recommend all dishes again to anyone. I also would like to go back and try the lamb. I ordered the beef entre and every aspect was perfectly flavoured. The gnocchi was also very well prepared.
Lastly my mother was diabetic and ordered the halibut, and the chef and server were nice enough to modify the dish to include roasted cauliflower instead of polenta, which we greatly appreciated.
Overall the atmosphere is nice, however it is quite a small establishment, and a relatively intimate setting. Not recommended for groups larger than 4, but I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner.
