Red Ox Inn Ratings and Reviews
The service was excellent. Our waiter was well versed with the menu and was able to offer answers to any questions we had. He was also able to suggest a small ingredient change for one of our guests to still be able to enjoy the dish she wanted. The price point for the meals was good. The appetizers were on the small side (only good for a couple bites) but very tasty. The mains were hearty and very filling.
Went out for a special evening. Have been to Red Ox previously. Noticed the costs went up and portion of meals/deserts went down/less for what you pay for!! As well noticed the service was not as attentive as on previous occasions. Bit of a concern. Will go back again but will be a while. Wud be good as well if server(s) would ask how the meal/desert was??!! We ordered a cheese platter for desert. For 14.00 to get 2 cheeses (the hard cheese -cheddar was quite minimal) some apple jelly and crackers was high for what you get. Either add more on the platter or adjust the price downward!! Our water glasses were not topped up until end of entrees. Missing the personal touches that we’ve experienced on previous occasions. Note to all at Red Ox - you have to improve or risk losing patrons such as us.
The food & service were amazing! The scallop and Arctic char appies were delightful and the gnocchi was creamy goodness. Our waitress was fantastic. Ambience got 3 stars because the owners need to cozy up the walls of the restaurant. I don't believe there was one piece of wall decor up. It 'atmosphere' seems cold in there. And the music playlist they had on during the evening was a bit odd. However my overall experience was great. The food is on point.
Food was terrific, i love eating at the Red Ox and i have recommended it to everyone i know. The wine list is awesome, great Scotch options. Only downside is my wife and I always end up eating at Red Ox during the winter and the draft from the door can be chilly at times.
Some of the best dishes I've ever tasted. While the food is pricey you get what you pay for. Everything was cooked, seasoned and presented perfectly. They were able to accommodate my fiancée with her gluten allergy with the regular dishes however there were very few items when it came to dessert. Even if it's frozen, I would suggest having a stand in gluten free dessert available to people with Celiac Disease. Overall a great experience and I would suggest trying their duck which was easily the best duck I've ever eaten.
I have an extremely hard to cater for diet due to my epilepsy to avoid all seizure triggers (no dairy, gluten, corn, soy, caffeine, alcohol, refined sugars, msg, aspartame) and this was the first restaurant in Edmonton willing to try and make me a meal which I appreciate a LOT.
I have dined here before I had this brain injury and the food was outstanding already! It just shows they will go the extra mile to accommodate anyone so people with allergies, this is the place to try! Even if you don't have any allergies or food restrictions you will still thank me later when you have one of the best cooked meals this city has to offer.
We weren’t starving so only ordered a salad I share and each an entree. Salad was great.
I usually really LOVE the duck here but found it still good but not like before. It usually has a slight crisp to the exterior and a super tender and moist interior but it almost reminded me of ham this time....
I usually like the bread pudding too but found it seemed undercooked... the apples were raw and crisp and it was wet and doughy inside....and not warm at all.....couldn’t be bothered to send it back as we had babysitters and we’re on a time crunch.
Also, I felt slightly cold the whole time this visit. There was definitely a draft but I suppose it may have been the super cold weather overall...
This visit was not as good as my usually visits here. Was a bit disappointed. It’s usually a restaurant I rave about.....I’m a total foodie and this visit was not the usual 5 I would give it.
We went there for our anniversary in January after a friend told me about this restaurant. I don't know where to begin. Start to finish it was amazing. My husband referred to it as a 'spiritual culinary experience' (we are quite the foodies). Everything was incredibly flavorful and we really enjoyed the atmosphere; very quaint. I don't know how we have never been there before but will definitely go back there again and again! It's not cheap but it is well worth the $$ in my opinion as the food is made with so much care and attention. Our server, Allison, also added to the experience; she was wonderful. I could go on and on but I think I made my point!
I hadn't been to the Red Ox Inn for about 25 or 30 years. The decor is definitely updated and not as cozy as I remember. More like modern chic now than rustic as I remember. The food was absolutely delicious. The steak was perfect. Grilled broccollini and layered potatoe rectangle were rich and tasty. Shared a bread pudding for dessert. It too was delicious! No complaints at all. Pretty close quarters between the tables, but it is a small restaurant. Can't really do it any other way in a small space. Would definitely go back and try other menu items.
The starter tomato soup with Alaskan fish and fresh herbs was very good on a cold day. The lamb shank was the best I've had in a long time. In most cases you are eating lamb bone with an essence of meat. Here there was more meat. The apple bread pudding had really excellent cinnamon and really stood out. That's what's great about this restaurant. The desserts don't take 2nd fiddle. They are just as good as the main course.
The Red Ox Inn is our go to place for special occasions. It was our first date, the Valentines day menu and wine pairing was fantastic, and most recently, we were just there for my partners birthday.
We are expecting our first little one in April, and I wanted to surprise the hubby with a gender reveal while we were our for his birthday supper. I called ahead to inquire if we could bring our own gender reveal cake into the restaurant and have them bring it out when we order dessert.
They were more that happy to accommodate our request and executed the surprise perfectly!
It is so nice when places aren't governed by a strict rule book and will go out of their way to help you with a special occasion.
We love this place!
Oh, and the food, wine, service is all fantastic!
It's a very small restaurant, the menu is relatively small as well but the food is amazing. I can see the value of quality over quantity here. We had great service and our server was very knowledgeable about the dishes. We had the scallop for an appetizer. It was so good and had so many layers of flavour. My husband ordered the beef and I had the lamb for our main. The beef was cooked to perfection, super tender and full of flavor. The lamb was just as delicious and tender. To finish, I would definitely recommend the bread pudding for dessert.
We are new to Edmonton, and this small restaurant was recommended to us, so we headed off - across town. The food was marvelous and the service was personal. We were made to feel like regulars and very special.
This is a perfect restaurant to walk to and have an intimate meal - but we do not live nearby. So our only regret is that the Red Ox Inn is not in our neighborhood. We would be going there regularly if it was ...
Thanks for a wonderful meal!
It was ok. Food was good, but not worth $35-40 a plate. We like excellent food, but felt that a large part of the price was driven by pretention rather than value or quality. Service felt pretentious and neglectful. Likely won’t be back in light of what else is available in Edmonton.
Too bad everything on the menu sounds incredible. The pork belly was amazing for an appetizer and the duck....well let me say I never have had that many flavours on a duck breast. It was delicious. As for dessert again you can’t go wrong with any choice you make.
