Red Owl Tavern Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I were in town from Harleysville at noon to volunteer for several hours at Philabundance and we had tickets for the Orchestra that evening. So we decided to stay downtown all day and I landed on the Red Owl Tavern as a restaurant choice purely by chance. The noise level was beyond energetic and the menu choices were limited but both our meals were excellent and our server was terrific.
Came here for brunch on New Years Day. Maybe the service was very slow because of the holiday. No juice was available because the juicer was broken. The food took approximately 50 minutes to come out. The food was good but we probably won't come back because of the other issues.
Fabulous find in a great location!
While looking for a fun place to eat near Independence Hall, we wandered into the Red Owl Tavern. What a treat! Great atmosphere, amazing drink menu, friendly server and an interesting menu. All of this made for a great evening out!
SO and I went for Christmas dinner and were seated in one of the booths in the back. The ambiance is lovely, dimmed lights and red lanterns (which matched the Chinese pop up theme). However, the food left a lot to be desired. The broccoli was overly charred, the smoky flavor was overwhelming. There were very few vegetarian options (only one main course). The burger was one of the worst my SO has experienced. The service was very aloof.
We stayed in the hotel and won’t order from them again.
I should have done my research on this place before making a reservation. They advertised that they would be playing a Christmas Story all day, so I thought that it would be a great place for Christmas dinner since we would not be with family this year. I was pretty bummed when I arrived and was told that the one tv in the restaurant was changed to football. I also thought there would be authentic Chinese food, not Chinese-inspired food so that was also a let down. I would not have been as disappointed if it were a typical dinner on a normal day, but I had higher hopes for Christmas.
Stopped here for brunch on a Thursday morning. Service was warm, but incredibly slow. I honestly believe our server forgot to put in our order, and left us sitting there forever. It's a small place so it's not like she didn't see us! And of course we were in a bit of a hurry. Disappointing
We heard great things but our experience did not live up to the hype. There were no more than 5 parties seated in the upstairs area so I know no one was particularly busy. My medium rare steak frites were on the medium raw side. When I sent it back - it was about 10-15 minutes before I saw my meal again. Kudos for not reheating but sending a new one. However, my dining companion and I planned to eat together - not watch each other eat. When the bill came - there was no recognition of what transpired. When I asked for the manager, she did make a slight reduction. All in all, I would never go back.
We came here after the Army-Navy game with a party of 10. They were very accommodating. The cocktails were creative and fun and they had a good selection of beers. The corn fritter appetizer was yummy and the charcuterie and cheese boards were a perfect start. The duck and steak got rave reviews. Pasta also was excellent. Shane, our server, was attentive and fun and gave great recommendations.
Drinks were pricey. Food was tasty. Two people ordered individual steaks but they were out so they ordered the largest steak and split it. It was plenty for 2. Burgers are messy but good!
A bit loud but kind of cool, hip place. Staff was accommodating to special requests like salad instead of fries for some. Those that got fries...they were awesome. We would go there again.
Had we not been seated upstairs, the restaurant might've been too noisy. Had a meeting with the Consul General of Poland from New York, who enjoyed the restaurant very much. I thought that was high praise coming from someone who eats in New York often. The menu was varied enough that we could all find something to eat--even those who were trying to be healthy. The wait staff couldn't have been more accommodating--all with a smile.
I had brunch here and I ordered the baked french toast. It looked like there were nuts on the french toast, but it could have well been streusel on top. I asked the waitress to confirm with the kitchen if this had nuts on it because I was allergic. Moments went by and I hadnt hear so I played it safe and ordered the the egg-white omelette. This omelette had nothing but gruyere cheese inside and was very dissatisfying. It appeared to be nothing like it sounded on the menu. I asked for the manager and explained to him my nut allergy as well as the egg-white omelette not being up to par. He said that was the way they made the omelette and I was mistaken. He didnt apologize for any inconvenience they caused me. They failed to acknowledge my nut allergy and still charged us for what we ate. The least they could have done was comped us for one of the entrees. I wont be returning here ever again and I advise all who are reading this to never go here. Management is terrible and the food is not great. I would have been better of cooking breakfast myself.
Set reservations for thanksgiving the Decor and layout was beautiful, food was great, service was fast especially accommodating the children, waitress provided excellent service, was Skeptical at first upon entrance with my fiancé and 2 lil ones ages 1yrs old and 2yrs old because of the there not being other little ones around and second guessing the booking but was later put at ease see other families arrivals the drive from Allentown was worth we would definitely come back😉
We went to Red Owl Tavern for Thanksgiving, and overall, I'm not sure that they should be doing special events like that. Their prix fixe menu for the holiday didn't include any choices, and didn't include pumpkin pie-- had I known that, I probably would have chosen another restaurant right off the bat. However, they did have selections from their regular menu available, so my husband ordered off of that. The prix fixe food did not some high quality enough to merit the price. The soup was fine, but the turkey dinner was... well, basic, and the gravy was poor. It tasted like a seasoning mix, rather than real food. Overall, I didn't think it was worth the price, and I would definitely go somewhere else next year.
I was there for Thanksgiving meal by my self because I just moved here an my wife was and is still in Florida. I ordered the special Thanksgiving 3 course meal. The first course was a soup and it was very good. The next course was the main course, but it came to my table 5 minuets after the soup...way too early. I found the server and told her this was too early, so she took it away. When I was finished with the soup, 15 minuets, the main course came from where I was told the heating lamp. There were plates of main course being delivered, during my 15 minuets eating my soup, why didn't I get a fresh main course? My main course came after spending 15 minuets under the heat lamp, that destroyed the texture of the food which destroyed the entire meal because it was the MAIN COURSE. You should not be using heating lamps for a plate of food for 15 minuets. I was expecting much better service, knowledge of food preparation and knowing customer expectations. If this is how you treat customers on a national holiday meal, count me OUT!!
