There was a very very large party so our service suffered. We stopped in for an appetizer the night before and the service was amazing!
Absolutely awful. Will never go back to this location.
We were there for brunch with a large group. Everyone enjoyed their food and our server, Jennifer, was fantastic. The bottomless drinks for brunch are a great value and the location just across from the beach was lovely.
Red O in Santa Monica is a great place for an afternoon lunch or evening cocktail. The service was excellent and food prices reasonable. The only drawback was the cooler temperatures; outdoor seating means doors are left open and the tables are drafty.
Red O Santa Monica was very noisy. The skinny margarita was watery and cost $17.00. My Jidori chicken breast was over cooked and tough. The vegetable enchilada was horrible. The tacos were mediocre.
The food was not as flavorful as I remember, and the service was subpar. Will not go back.
The restaurant was fantastic. In fact the service was what really made the day. Our server was one of the best person that could have helped make the special occasion for my friend even better.
We had four great meals. The oysters, guacamole, and yellowtail aguachile were fantastic. The Chilean sea bass was moist and very flavorful. The braised short rib enchiladas were awesome and the crab and shrimp enchiladas were excellent. The lamb chop and scallop combination was great. We are definitely going back many more times
First time here. Food was good. I would come back.
Celebrating an engagement. Nothing was great nothing bad. Portions were smaller than Newport location. Service average. Newport location does a far better job on the Margaritas.
What a fantastic place! Of course the location is fantastic being across from the Santa Monica pier. How do you beat that? The other great thing is that it’s just down the street from the newer park as well as the filming location for the Prime TV series “goliath“. The food is fantastic and the service is exceptional. No way to go wrong here!
We are Red O fans, but hadn’t had dinner in this location before. Each location has it’s own distinct charm. This one is right where the action is in Santa Monica across the street from the Pier. No matter, because we had the same great margaritas, delicious food and friendly service. A great night out with friends.
It’s pretty noisy and busy, but the food is pretty good! Definitely a hipster chic vibe, but it’s a nice time and literally across the street from the beach.
Awesome evening at Red O. Food was delicious and the margaritas even better. Excellent service as well
Felt like the portions were small for price. Drinks and service was good but wouldn’t go back as the food was just ok for such a famous chef.
I relied on the web menu for this location, but the web site had not been updated for the latest menu and my two primary items had been removed. I had based my other meals that day around what I anticipated having that night, only to find that those items were no longer available.
Waitress was non-personable and appeared distracted.
Someone had passed out in the men's bathroom stall, causing quite a distraction.
I'm not sure why you ask about the reasons for the visit - special occasion or otherwise. There's no acknowledgement of such at the restaurant.
I had expectations for a Newport RedO experience, but was very disappointed with this Santa Monica location.
Great food and service but ultra noisy
I LOVE this place. Very upscale in taste and presentation. Simply delicious! I am a true foodie and the Red O stays on my restaurant rotation list. :) Thank you for including it on Diine N LA again this year.
Great restaurant. Not your typical 2 tacos, beans and rice Mexican Food restaurant. Food portions are wonderful (maybe even too big).
The wine list could use a lot of help, and the $30 corkage seems crazy in light of the limited wine selection.
My only criticism is that two of the four of us had birthdays that night, we put it in the Open Table Comments, and they did not recognize or even comment on our birthdays. Seemed a little odd.
Overall great evening at the beach in Santa Monica.
Great location and view of the Santa Monica pier and people watching. We were celebrating a birthday and it was a great place for it. The food was awesome and so were the bottomless mimosas. The only complaint was my brother's glass come with lipstick still on it - obvious that the glass was not washed. And, the straw also had the same lipstick!! That grossed us out even though the waiter swore he put in a new straw!?!
Our server was very un interested in us and was only nice when he put down the bill
Went for Dine LA. Food was excellent especially the duck taquitos and filet mignon. Service was great and the price was amazing. Would go again and pay full price
We ate on the patio because we had our four legged family with us. It was nice to be able to book a reservation with outdoor seating instead of the first come , first served some restaurants offer when choosing outdoor seating.
Our server was nice and our order was correct; I just hate when I have to keep asking for our beverage(s) to be refilled (water and ice T).
The food was flavorful and everyone enjoined their meal. I would recommend and will return.
The food, ambience and overall experience was wonderful. Our server was pleasant and provided excellent service. The food was on point and the buzz in the restaurant was amazing. I don’t usually like to point out the negatives in any dining experience; however, the hostess that I encountered that evening is worth mentioning to help improve the service quality and customer experience at Red O. Unfortunately, the hostess was unfriendly and unwilling to be helpful. We checked in a little early and even though there were available tables, she kept telling us to check back in at our reservation time. I told her that I would be at the bar and she again, repeated that I would have to check back in with her and that she would not come over to get us when the table was ready. Usually, the hostesses are willing to come get you when the table is ready, but this night, with this particular hostess, she was unwilling to do much of anything. Hopefully, a little training in customer service will help her in the way she interacts with patrons of the restaurant. Other than that, loved the place!
Love the food and the service is awesome! Wait staff is very attentive!
Par excellence with food quality, attentive staff, location & embiance
Nice looking restaurant in a very nice area. The food is was good but I guess I was expecting more as it is a Rick Bayless restaurant. Service was good and so were the margaritas.
Awesome much quieter than Orange Co venue at Fashion Island!
New year so cool
It kind of felt like a tourist trap, food was good though.
Always very good - excellent food, creatively prepared, Red-O provides friendly service, both on the patio and inside. The dog-friendly back patio adds another reason to come back often. The only knock is that they should do music as well as the food.
Visiting LA for our daughter's 16th Birthday and made reservations in the morning and we had a lovely table at the front window overlooking the beach at sunset. The food was excellent! My husband loved it because the restaurant is a spin off from the old Red Onion Restaurants that he used to visit when he lived in West Chester as a young boy. The surprise handmade churros were such a fun treat as a lite dessert!
Best margaritas and guac
Expensive and food not very good. We onlybwent because we were 12 and could not get a last minute resevation elsewhere
The food was great. Ambiance was also nice. The restaurant is i a great location for those who want to walk along the Santa Monica Pier. I would definitely visit this restaurant again! Our server was great and had a warm personality!
Terrible evening and service. Ruined our Christmas Eve. Won’t be back .
When Red O first opened I was lucky enough to get a reservation within the first week. The food was spectacular. It was a meal to remember. This time, not so much. The food lacked a first bite, wow taste. The duck taquitos were a little dry. The short rib enchiladas which I remember so well lacked the depth of taste and were dry as well. Even when the plate was presented it lacked the high quality appearance that I remember. The beans and rice were just that, a big scoop of beans and rice. Sorry, I don't go out very often, but when I do and am going to a lovely restaurant I expect the food to have a depth of taste much better than what I can do at home. The restaurant itself I loved. I liked the atmosphere and our waiter was outstanding. I do have to say, whomever made the churros was spot on. They were DELICIOUS!!!
Overall, experience was fine, but with a few glitches. First, we were seated at a high-top, which felt like being at a bar, not a nice restaurant. We asked to move and after a few minutes, we were moved, which was appreciated.
We ordered the $47 NY Strip steak "medium," but it came rare.....waiter was properly disturbed and sent it back, and after a few minutes brought it back properly cooked, with some extra potatoes for our trouble. Steak was tasty. Lobster tail was just so-so.
Staff was very accommodating. The server was attentive without being obtrusive. The ingredients were of high-quality, but the tastes were bland, especially considering the attempt to generate a hip vibe.
Black mole should be complex and not particularly sweet. Here it was bit too sweet without compensating complexity. The guacamole had no kick and was way too processed for my liking, being almost a mousse.
If you are a vegetarian, this place is NOT for you. We were 5 vegetarians at the table and because they ran out of corn there were NO vegetarian dishes.
