Staff was very accommodating. The server was attentive without being obtrusive. The ingredients were of high-quality, but the tastes were bland, especially considering the attempt to generate a hip vibe.
Black mole should be complex and not particularly sweet. Here it was bit too sweet without compensating complexity. The guacamole had no kick and was way too processed for my liking, being almost a mousse.
It was the worst dining experience of my life. Food was bad, service was bad. We were accosted and harassed by street people homeless people. At one point a homeless person reached thru the window and grabbed things from our table then said they had a gun and would we like to see it. Manager offered a free round of drinks. They never came, we left. It sucked. It ruined our whole night.
This was my first time at this restaurant.
It was an early Saturday night and when I
arrived, there were very few people inside.
Our server was fast to approach our table.
Our orders were taken and very quickly our
food was served. Almost too fast.
The food was good and made fresh to order.
We had a dessert which was also made to order.
Our server was pleasant and checked back often.
We were finished very quickly--almost less than
one hour and felt the cost of valet parking was
not worth the short time we were there.
The food, drinks, and service was very good, and we will definitely go again. However, there were people standing outside the entrance to the restaurant smoking, and the cigarette fumes were making their way inside and to our table. We will request a table towards the rear of the restaurant next time, so we can enjoy our meal without the smell of cigarettes. Very nice assortment of tequilas to choose from.
It was AMAZING!!! It was my birthday and we did brunch on the patio! We met a few other people and it turned into a huge celebration and I LOVE the churro donuts they gave me for my birthday!!!
We always brunch here but yesterday was a whole new level of greatness!
We had a party of 9 including 4 very young children on the patio for Sunday brunch. The menu was accommodating for children as well as the adults. 3 of us were celebrating birthdays and they brought not one, but 3 complimentary desserts. The food was delicious as were the margaritas, and the service was excellent and not rushed. Already looking forward to next time!
The food was awesome but the service was lacking. Had to call him over a few times. Had to ask for refills. Had to ask for a dessert menu. The only thing we didn't have to ask for was the check. Brought that right away. For spending almost $500 for dinner I expected a little more. Food great service was disappointing.
Every time in LA (Calabasas), upon returning we take the PCH and stop for dinner at Red-O in Santa Monica (probably our 6th time), always good, always consistent . We had a group of six, no one was disappointed. We were sat outside, almost like a private table and they put on the football game, our waitress was great.
Oh what a disappointment.
The restaurant is extremely loud; the music was so loud customers were shouting so their table could hear them. The staff did turn the music down when requested but the manager then turned it back up.
The plates were obviously prepared early; the refried beans had a hard layer/crust on top, the rice was lukewarm, the mains were dry and also appeared pre-prepared. A shame really as the flavour was basicly there. Perhaps a bit more salt, and the guacamole needed lime but that is a personal preference.
The restaurant was not clean. When your hands stick to the table and your feet to the floor that is not good. Don't get me started on the toilets, they were atrocious.
The wine (Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc) was $48 a bottle which can be purchased at Costco , Smart and Final, etc. for $11-$13. I understand that alcohol is where restaurants make their largest profit margins, but ~400% mark-up. Really!
We paid ~$45 per person (party of 4) for this lunch which is not unreasonable for Santa Monica. However, given the overall dining experience, this lunch was not worth it.
Some of the serving staff seemed to be more interested in preening themselves in front of the windows. Our server was very good however. Attentative, knowledgable and very professional.
The location was outstanding.
Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant. There are numerous other restaurants in the vicinity with similar views, cheaper, cleaner, and better food.
I've been to the West Hollywood location several times and really enjoyed it. The SM location must cater to tourists from the Midwest, as the food is super bland and tastes like it came out of a jar (especially the salsa). I NEVER use salt at a restaurant, but had to ask for it to give my food a hint of flavor. I was pretty embarrassed that I recommended the place to my out of town guests hoping to get authentic high quality Mexican food. And to add insult to injury, it was fairly expensive so we left feeling hungry and cheated.

When I said something to the hostess who looked like a bad Grace Jones knock off , she said to me "this is LA" as if I was some kind of street urchin .
I explain to one waitress that I have been to many rick Bayless restaurants before and have better service. She looked at me and did not know who Rick Bayless was .
Very disappointing compared to Fronterra Grill and Topolobompo.
We arrived 30 minutes before reservation time--no problem. Food was outstanding! Server was friendly, knowledgeable, and very attentive--he added a lot to a fun evening. Signature margarita was the best I've ever had. Two types of mole--both exceptional. One in our party said the short rib taco was the best taco she'd ever had. Definitely worth the drive to Santa Monica--we will return!
I have dined at the Red O on Melrose many times, albeit a few years ago. I really liked it very much.
Except for the service, which was excellent, this restaurant in Santa Monica was mediocre at best.
The menu has been changed from the original RED O menu of a few years ago and it has lost its character and uniqueness.
Other than the food being, for the most part, overpriced, it was mediocre at best. The sizzling plates (and we ordered three) did not sizzle literally and were bland and uninteresting. The spicy shrimp dish was so over-salted, I could taste nothing else.
Sad that what once was a great place has commercialized and become less than good.
RED O now a RED NO for me.
Great location and view. Service was good. Unfortunately the food was awful. I never complain and I didn't even tell the server either. My margarita was good but it was serve in a martini glass and soon got kinda warm. The chips and salad are fantastic. Ordered chicken and shrimp enchiladas. Not even in the worst jails in Mexico would they serve this food. I was embarrassed bc I took my step daughter there for her bday and thought it would be memorable. Prices are a little high but it's Santa Monica so it's expected. I def won't return unless itsfor the chips and salsa
Overall my wife and I enjoyed our experience at Red O. Did the Dine LA menu. Duck tacos are amazing. Wife completely enjoyed her sea bass and I had the enchiladas. Waiter was excellent, very attentive and very upbeat. Great location on Ocean Blvd and great for people watching and enjoying a sunset.
The location by the SM Pier is exceptional,along with the food And ambiance you have a winner.Sitting by the window with the sun and beach breeze,Marguerita in hand.Takes. you to a different place Tropical,casual,comfortable.Great food and setting come before the sun sets for the full affect
Everything was delicious!! We had a party of 5 and we all had something different, so good! Skirt steak very nice! 3 people had mojitos and loved them!! Service was excellent and everyone was very friendly! Loved the location across from the Santa Monica Pier. We'll be back!
We love this restaurant, but this trip was disappointing to say the least. The had already ran out of my favorite dish at 8 p.m. on a Saturday evening. We had to settle for something we really didn't enjoy. Our server disappeared for long periods of time leaving us with either empty glasses or no food. Overall, just an epic fail.
