Often dine here before seeing a show at Lyric Stage. Food generally good. Ma po tofu a bit thin sauce wise. Flavor nice but too soup-like.
Food was great. Service was excellent. But the loud music was a turn-off, making conversion impossible. I was told that on Thurs, Fri, and Sat night, there is DJ/dancing after certain hours. But it’ll be great if they can hold off the loud music until the dancing starts.
A friend and I were heading into Boston to the Lyric Stage Company. We had tickets for 8 PM, but needed to stop for dinner. We arrived (after parking ) at the Red Lantern at 6:30 PM and indicated we'd need to head over to the theater by 7:45 PM. We were promptly seated at the sushi bar (only available reservation at that time). We were seated at the furthest seats on the left (which didn't give us a great view of the sushi chefs...rather, I could stare into some stacked wooden sushi boats and wrapped avocados), but they were last minute reservations. There are other central bar seats that were obviously the ones to have.
We decided on several appetizers and drinks in order to meet our theater showing. We both started with the Sumo martini, which featured gin, grapefruit juice, & basil. It was DELICIOUS. It wasn't overly sweet and cloying and it certainly hit the spot. We enjoyed chicken lettuce wraps with two sauces, chicken skewers on grilled pineapple, shrimp shumai (with the most delicious mustard/Japanese mayo sauce), and shared a huge bowl of udon noodles featuring tender pork and garlicky pea pods. BTW, the young man who delivered our courses was absolutely fabulous: great personality, friendly, knowledgeable, etc. I wished I'd gotten his name for public kudos.
I would certainly come back again when I have more time and enjoy more of the Red Lantern. The bar scene was hopping and seemed like a fun spot to be seated as well.
Red lantern was fine but not amazing. Food was good, service was friendly and very good. Decor was lovely. We were going for amazing as opposed to ‘perfectly fine’
We had a very nice time at the Red Lantern. Our group of 5 feasted on appetizers, edamame and lobster Rangoon. We then ordered the smaller of the two Sushi/Shashimi boats. The presentation was delightful and the the taste scrumptious. The beverages had a generous pour . The waitstaff was very attentive on a busy Halloween night.
The food is terrific. While it's not inexpensive, you can count on bringing home leftovers for lunch the next day. Great place to go!
I enjoyd the food and the atmosphere but thought the prices were a little high for what you got. Red wines by the glass were not cery good
Came here for a birthday dinner and had a great time. Food was good, but portions are tiny and overpriced. The restaurant itself is visually appealing and has a NY vibe.
Pretty disappointing overall. Would not recommend, but wouldn’t turn people away actively. Much better food at other restaurants nearby.
This was an unpleasant dining experience. Loud, blaring music was one big problem, but over- salted food and a minimally pleasant hostess combined to make this an evening we’d rather forget! We were out of there in 45 minutes, and not a moment too soon!
Great appetizers and sushi. Had the duck buns, chicken lettuce wraps, spring rolls, crab Rangoons and scallion pancake.
Great night with awesome food and friends!
Everything great except the 26.00 mai tai! I could not figure out why it was so much!! Recommend to skip.
We are big fans of Red Lantern. It has a vibrant atmosphere, but not overwhelming. I've been there for business dinners and with my family. It is good for both because it has a number of different seating areas and, despite being energetic, you can also hear your companions talk. We especially like it with the kids if we dine early, because the restaurant isn't yet packed and the menu is versatile enough that we can have sashimi and they can have the things they like. The two consistent opportunities we have experienced with the restaurant is that 1) the front desk always seems to be painfully slow in getting us seated (even when we have a reservation and the restaurant is empty) and 2) the food usually comes out way too fast, which leads to quickly becoming overwhelmed with lots of plates. We have asked before at the beginning of a meal if they could pace it out, but it doesn't seem like the kitchen is geared that way. The staff is diligent, attentive and responsive, but there are a few systematic glitches they could address. If you are prepared for those two relatively insignificant challenges, it is otherwise a good experience.
Dinner for 4 on a Friday night... Love restaurants like Red Lantern with my favorites being Tao & Buddakan in NYC. Unfortunately we were so disappointed in Red Lantern and when the bill came I just shook my head & said never again.
First let me say the ambiance was good...DJ and a great vibe. It went downhill from there.
My drink came & it was warm...melted ice and just plain bad. We ordered 5 appetizers for the table & only one was pretty good. The rock shrimp but even that was just ok. I asked the server what she recommended & I changed a couple of items based on that but those changes were never made & original order came out ...ok.
The beed very expensive was tough... the fish lacked favor & was actually a little tough. The pad thai was a warm mush & once again very little flavor. The salmon was ok...but once again lacked flavor & not that good but compared to other entrees it was the highlight.
I do not like to write bad reviews but when you spend over $400 for dinner you expect quality..service....I ask expect a manager to be in the building to ask how everything is etc... MIA. Our server was pretty much bland until the check came then a big smile & hope you had a great night.
We live in Boston & will not be going back to Red lantern.
Although it looks like a lovely restaurant, in a wonderful well converted building, it is really just another middle of the road singles bar and club. The noise is too high for talking while dining. Lots of millennials shouting to hear themselves above the music. I think its too bad the owners can't figure out how to have a nice dining spot that converts to a bar later. It would require a significant change in the ambiance to enable a more relaxed and elegant dining experience.
Great looking place. First impression awesome. We had a wonderful waitress- quick, knowledgeable and friendly. Food was good, but only good. Broken Lobster Stir Fry was a sloppy mess. It promises 2.5 lbs of "mostly shucked" lobster. It's about a pound of lobster pieces and a pound of lung filler and hardly any shucked.
Good. Not great.
Food was very good. Overwhelmed by portion sizes and ordered much too much food. Very noisy! Would hesitate going back because of noise level.
Very accommodating and understanding when I had to add two guests the day before. Excellent service at the bar and the dining area. Thursday nights they have a live DJ at 10pm so was fun to enjoy a big group dinner with drinks and then dancing with music. Great ambiance, delicious food, great cocktails, and good prices.
Appetizers - scallion pancakes & spring rolls - were very tasty. My nephew had the tofu entree, requested extra spicy, said it was very good. My beef and broccoli was tender but bland. Overall, we enjoyed our meal
Omgosh! What a great experience. We came here for my dad’s birthday, and everything was amazeballs. From the excellent service to the yummy food, I cannot wait to come back and do this all over again!
Best place for gluten free Asian style food. Rice is delicious. Fresh ingredients and portions are perfect to share. Noise level can be high once restaurant is full, so conversation can be difficult for a large party.
My first time there and it was fun, tasty and very elegant. Loved the vibe!!!
Raymond was amazing and very welcoming and made the night very enjoyable
Food was very good - not the best in Boston, but still very good. You really go here for the ambiance and amazing drinks.
excellent ambience, food choices and generous portions. the cocktails are also really good. great place for a large group.
great restaurant, went there for my wife bday and the ambiance was great and so the food and drinks
Our family dined here over Columbus Day weekend. We ordered a variety of appetizers and entrees from this fabulous Pan Asian establishment. Each and very item was delicious, carefully prepared! The rice stick noodle dish was the best I'd ever had! And the atmosphere was enchanting and festive!
Too loud, food very average
Samir was the absolute best
Food was outstanding. Service was pleasant but waited for reservation. Servers and kit hen slow. Unclear who was pushing service. This is a a management problem in organizing wait ataff, servers, busing and kitchen. Again, all the people were pleasant and curteous, just need to be better organized to deliver quality and timeliness.
Worst service I have ever had at a restaurant. They forgot Iw as there (went for me reservation 30 minutes early) and I had to remind them 3 times before I was seated. In the meantime they sat over 10 groups of 2 (my size) and more that walked through the door. When we finally sat no server came over to us for 15 minutes. I had to flag someone down and place my entire order at once. It was my birthday. Absolutely awful experience- will NEVER go back.
Food was good and servings were adequate. Service was quick with a reservation -- seated immediately.
Good news first, the food was outstanding, albeit a tad pricey.
We sent on a Saturday night and think they could turn down the music a notch or two. I would best describe the place as a gathering place for millennial friends. Maybe the vibe is different during the week when it's less busy, but for dating or quiet conversation, not Saturday night.
Waited an hour after reservation time. Service was still below average
Great food. You must try the Duck Buns. The noise level is a bit high for me.
Very attentive service, I spilled a drop of sauce on my shirt. Next minute the waiter showed up with soda water to help me cleaning off the stain.
Not special. Very ordinary food. Too expensive for what it is. I've had better Asian food at small family owned restaurants for a lot less money. Sushi was not great.
Good menu, cool ambiance. Our waiter was sluggish in tending to our table.
Great food. Awesome service. Just too loud.
