About Red Cat
This Old Chelsea food hall opened in 1999 and is a New York original. The Red Cat's combination of come-as-you-are sensibilities and straightforward, satisfying, and occasionally irreverent cuisine instantly establish the restaurant as a favorite with New York diners. David Battin currently runs the kitchen that's become famous for such whimsical creations as Quick Sauté of Zucchini with toasted almonds, and pecorino; Duck Risotto with maitake, ricotta salata, and truffle; and Homemade Pappardelle with oxtail ragu, pecorino romano, and rosemary. Such dishes only add to the restaurant's mystique as a place for all seasons, styles, and spirits. As Frank Bruni wrote in the New York Times, "The Red Cat feels vaguely colonial and tavern like, except when it feels downtown-gallery cool, and apart from those moments when it feels modestly and eclectically elegant."

Red Cat Ratings and Reviews
There for brunch. If we hadn't had a 30% discount I would have been very angry. 2 "baked" eggs (looked poached, which is ok) on a bed of watery sauteed spinach for $15. And 2 pieces of toast. No better than diner food. Shocking for what used to be a great restaurant.
We enjoyed our meals, but when I tried three recommended dishes, I was somewhat disappointed. The potatoes surrounding my octopus a la plancha were burned. The skate was plentiful but not special; the apricot tart was boring. The terrine was outstanding, and the semifreddo looked fabulous, though I didn't get a taste.
We had a Blackboard coupon, so I was pleased by the value. Don't know that I would go back, unless I was doing something in the neighborhood.
Went back after a long absence due to noise level & crowded tables. That has thankfully changed--more space and you need not scream to be heard. The menu is much the same as always with dishes perfectly done. Wine list very reasonable. Get the semifreddo and you will be in heaven. Brianna knows her menu and was delightful. Nice changes, we will now go more often!
I was very disappointed, Red Cat used to be wonderful, great food, elegant, sophisticated.
I last visited a few years ago.
It is no longer any of the above.
the food was expensive & dull, cheap ingredients, badly executed.
maybe it's changed hands.
I would not visit it again. sorry -
They have a no outside drink policy which is fine so they took my girlfriends Starbucks coffee. Upon leaving they told us they there the drink out. This is unacceptable. If they were going to throw it out they should have told us. Most restaurants have a policy where they hold it off on the side somewhere.
Food was also too pricey (and salty) for what you got.
We always enjoy Red Cat. The food is reliably good - we have enjoyed everything, each visit. The waiters are lovely. Could use a bit more 'service' with the staff who actually serve the food. We will definitely return. Neighborhood favorite, great late night dinner and bar, and special occasion restaurant.
This is a solid restaurant. It never disappoints. Good food. Good service. Warm welcoming atmosphere. We have been coming here on an off for over ten years. The perfect winter restaurant - cozy - not too noisy - comfortable bar.
