About Red Cat
This Old Chelsea food hall opened in 1999 and is a New York original. The Red Cat's combination of come-as-you-are sensibilities and straightforward, satisfying, and occasionally irreverent cuisine instantly establish the restaurant as a favorite with New York diners. David Battin currently runs the kitchen that's become famous for such whimsical creations as Quick Sauté of Zucchini with toasted almonds, and pecorino; Duck Risotto with maitake, ricotta salata, and truffle; and Homemade Pappardelle with oxtail ragu, pecorino romano, and rosemary. Such dishes only add to the restaurant's mystique as a place for all seasons, styles, and spirits. As Frank Bruni wrote in the New York Times, "The Red Cat feels vaguely colonial and tavern like, except when it feels downtown-gallery cool, and apart from those moments when it feels modestly and eclectically elegant."

Red Cat Ratings and Reviews
Red Cat’s in the neighborhood. We’ve been many times. Food and service can be uneven, but never awful, and at times it can soar. Sadly, our dinner Thursday crash landed. The waiter was seldom to be seen so difficult to get his attention. We were never offered bread. Food was served with no regard for placement on the table. Did the server not see the wine glass between the diner and the food? And but for the signature tempura green beans (redeemingly crisp and flavorful), the food was a disappointment. The trout was dry and flavorless, the accompanying beans tough and stringy, the vischyssoise utterly flavorless. Too bad. We know they can do better.
Unfortunately, The Red Cat has become more of a destination for mature regulars. I had a business dinner with a client and while all of the regulars were given large tables we were relegated to small table near the kitchen. We were on time and it was early 6:30.
Service was completely on a novice level and this was disappointing. The best part of the evening was the exceptional cosmopolitan! The calamari puttanesca was excellent but overall this was a very disappointing night. I would not return and did comment to the host that The Red Cat no longer is a solid venue that one can be assured of a good experience for a business client. Thumbs down. Too many other excellent and reliable choices in this city!
Way too loud; food good (both had fish which was fresh); service slow and no bread. Limited menu if looking for something original but seemed like a lot of repeaters who must like it.
Best part is location near Hi-line so you can stroll with your date/spouse before or after dinner.
I have been going to The Red Cat for...10 years, at least. It NEVER disappoints. It’s my go-to for superb food, great service and ambiance. It has remained stellar for such a long time, it makes me happy to continually recommend it to friends. I had another great meal Saturday night. Big love for The Red Cat!
Had the burger which was recommended. Turns out they switched it to a double burger with smaller patties and the waiter explained that we could only order the burger medium well or well down. So bottom line is tbe burger was over cooked and also very salty. The romain salad appetizer was decent but very disappointing burger.
Had dinner with a friend and have dined here a few times before. It’s better than ever. Food is wonderful. Some standouts from our meal: chicken liver and foie gras terrine and the porgy and chicken entrees. We tried the rigatoni with shaved white truffle special for $60–nice dish but not the “spectacular” it should be to justify the price.
The service was fabulous! Among the best we’ve experienced anywhere. Our server and others were friendly, knowledgeable, magically there whenever we wanted them, and not when we didn’t.
Ambience is cheerful NY vibe. Most tables are in lines against the wall, not my favorite but not a deal killer by any means. Noise level is vigorous. Again, wish it were a bit less but not a deal killer.
Without the truffle dish and with 2 drinks each but no dessert or coffee, with tax bill would have been about $100 each. Not cheap but the quality is there! Oh, and our server brought us two chocolate Earl Gray truffles at the end— seriously one of the most intensely chocolatey, luscious foods we have ever put on our mouths. Try to score one ( or ten!)
Always an amazing meal at Red Cat. We've been coming since it opened almost 29 years ago . It has remained one of our most favorite restaurants in NYC for all these years. The food is alway excellent as well as the service. Thank you for always taking such wonderful care of us!
Delicious food, warm ambience, not too noisy but not dead either. Tempura string beans were fun (they gave us far too many!) and the main courses were excellent as well. Chic yet casual atmosphere, friendly, unpretentious but knowledgeable servers. Zero complaints! (Unusual for a lifelong New Yorker.) Hope to return soon.
We haven't been to Red Cat in many years. It has a much warmer less tavern feel than I remember. Some of the food was excellent, particularly the chicken liver foie gras terrine and the decadent olive oil chocolate cake, but we were disappointed with the main courses, duck breast and skate, which could have had more going on. Service was excellent. We like the place and hope to try it again sometime with different choices.
This was recommended as a good place to have a quiet meal. Not so much. Rather loud and waitress didn’t seem overly concerned when we told her they had served us an unopened mussel. On a plate with only 4 mussels, it was a definite oversight by the chef. Food was very good but staff were not overly attentive.
Great food, consistently delicious with great service. The restaurant was wonderful to help me with a birthday celebration...from where we sat to the surprise candle. I would have given this restaurant a much higher rating but for this big problem. We were seated next to an incredibly loud woman trying to speak to her elderly mother..through the entire meal. They arrived after we were seated. Talk about a buzz kill! When we told the waitress, we would have liked for her to have said something to the woman, but she didn't. I think she should have. We were caught between saying something, embarrassing the woman and possibly getting in an argument or suffering through it. We chose the latter which killed the evening for us. I'd never sit in the back room again.
This used to be our favorite Chelsea restaurant - and we were so looking forward to bringing friends. We were disappointed. Limited varieties of liquors. -Note - we are not big drinkers, but had to settle for some no name vodka in our martini. We had to ask for bread, and then ask for a second piece. The food was tasty but smaller portions than we remember..I had calves liver, bacon, and it was served with salad. I guess nothing lasts forever...We were wondering if it was sold - as there was a very different vibe. They DID give us the window table that we had requested. I wouldn't say it was bad, just NOT as good as it used to be. I will go elsewhere.
We had a wonderful experience at Red Cat on Saturday night. Celebrated our anniversary and we could not have been happier, on the recommendation of a good friend. The food was excellent, and the service was both attentive and timely. The barkeep (Kate) was as sweet as she was knowledgeable about food/wine pairing. I would not hesitate to recommend for any occasion.
