Contemporary American
Recette, meaning "recipe" in French, is Chef Jesse Schenker's first foray into the NYC restaurant scene. Chef Schenker took on Geoffrey Zakarian in Food Network's Kitchen Stadium on Iron Chef America and won! His time at Chef Gordon Ramsay's "The London" and James Beard award winner Chef Thomas Keller's "Per Se" certainly established the Recette's chef's culinary bona fides. One of the most popular ways to enjoy the food at Recette is the Chef's Tasting Menu. You can try either the 5-, 7- or 10- course option and enjoy a small plate journey through Chef Schenker's repertoire. You can enjoy an arctic-char tartar or fried sweetbreads with brown butter.

Second time there, and absolutely loved it yet again. As my husband put it, every mouthful was a delight, an explosion of flavor, subtle nuances of deliciousness. Genius on a plate. I highly recommend the tasting, but don't think you can go wrong no matter what you order.

We live in the neighborhood and finally made it to Recette. The place is a total delight. The food exceeded expectations, the wine was better, and the service superlative without being stodgy. I don't know why this is not more of a citywide destination, but I am happy for our sake that it remains under the radar. Go here!

This is a restaurant Cupid could love. We had dinner at Recette on Valentine's Day. What a superlative experience! The five-course tasting menu was a taste sensation. Let us count the ways. Red snapper crudo flecked with pomegranate, fennel purée, and caviar so fresh you wanted to slap it. Shellfish chowder festooned with morsels of succulent seafood. Duck, on a bed of coco bean cassoulet and chorizo, that melted on the tongue. Veal accompanied by sweet potato hash and creamed kale, a dish that left us cheering. The dessert of raspberry mousse offered an exclamation point that was satisfying without being cloying. What about the service, you might ask? Perhaps the best of any restaurant in New York. Solicitous without being saccharine. Attentive without hovering. We bow to you, Recette!

This is a very small restaurant, with a cozy bistro style. They play loud music that didn't match the style at all. We had reservations but had to wait for 30 minutes anyway. The valentine's day meal was okay. Extremely expensive for the quality of food you got. They were obviously having trouble keeping up with table service and waitstaff were visibly irritated. But still friendly. The crudo was delicious. Each course had interesting flavor profiles but the courses were hit and miss. Overall, some great food but definitely not worth $400 for two people.

We were excited to try Recette as it came highly recommended. The service was good but the meals we received weren't great. One entree was cold and two main meals missed the mark. I hope this was a one off as the menu sounded better than what was plated up.

I'd thought this was a gourmet tapas place, with a French accent, so was very excited to go, hoping to be reminded of Barcelona and Madrid where so much ordinary tapas is superb. Was extremely disappointed. The food was awful, from my standpoint. First, there was almost nothing I was inclined to order -- nearly every dish with meat (bad news not non-meat-eaters) and/or with hot chili -- and puny selection of fish. And the place is a bit too precious about special requests, e.g., hold the meat-based condiments. Then what I did order (with or without special requests) was mediocre. Won't be returning.

The restaurant gave our table away despite our being on time for our reservation. We waited for a whole hour. Management waited until the last minute of our waiting to rectify this error. Despite being apologetic and having given us some treats as an peace offering, an hour wait with a reservation is unacceptable and does not reflect well on the management of the restaurant.

There is no much to say additionally, it is a nice place to have a romantic dinner with terrific food and enjoyable wine but the ambience sound was not appropriate for this purpose. A bit noise and certain excess of electronic music. My suggestion to a couple is to share a course of 3 or 5 dishes and ask for a desert recomendation. The waiters are so good in describe each delicious alternatives.

At first glance, the restaurant looked idyllic and adorable in West Village. The ambiance inside is also fairly romantic and a nice noise level for dinner. However, the food and the service left much to be desired. Extremely small portions and either too salty or too bland. Look elsewhere for date night in West Village - many other better options!

The three of us dined here one evening and were impressed by the variety of flavors, textures and ingredients in our choices. However, we left feeling hungry for something more solid. The three "main" plates we ordered were the branzino, a ravioli and ???. The olive were FABULOUS!!!! We thought that the S'mores dessert was a bit small. The menu selections change very day, as the innovative chef is clearly exercising his repertoire depending on what is available. One of the three tasting menus might be the best way to experience this restaurant.

I live in Ohio, and found this restaurant online, which can be a bit risky to begin with. My plan was to ask my girlfriend to marry me during the dinner on the day after Christmas. Everything went wonderfully, starting with the fact that our server Kristen knew of my plan and was more than willing to help in anyway possible! She was a great server, but even more than that, she went out of her way to make it a special night! From the extra splash of wine, to the champagne (after my girl said yes! ), to the beautiful dessert with a candle in it, she was phenomenal! Great experience, and we will be back in a year!

I came here for the Christmas Eve dinner with a friend. We were seated at the corner settee and the services were solicitous throughout the meal. The restaurant was very accommodating to substitute one dish which I could not for another one. The 4-course menu was tasty but I would not describe them as special. Perhaps worth coming again at another time to access the place more realistically.

Only a few short blocks from the new Whitney, this place should be jumping. We arrived for a 6:00 p.m. reservation on a Wednesday and were the only table. One more table arrived about 7:30. No loud music (which earlier reviewers hated). The food was fantastic, from the amuse bouche through dessert. Give them 2 main items (one cold, one hot) and they take it from there for the tasting menu. We had the 5 course tasting. Wife and I loved the food, including the foie gras, bone marrow toast, langostines, branzino, duck breast, deconstructed rabbit pot pie. Very well prepared with interesting presentation. Desserts were great, too. Servers were knowledgeable and polite. Wine by the glass was good and Amaro's recommendation spot on. Curious wine list with a majority of very expensive bottles. We look forward to returning!

Recette recommended by an acquaintance, who dined several months ago. Staff were very attentive and friendly from initial entry to exit. This was during the Thanksgiving period and the restaurant was initially empty, and was never as busy as usual (so I'm told by staff). My wife and I ordered the five course 'grazing' or 'tasting' menu with wine. Whilst we'd allowed our effervescent server to decide which 'culinary delights' from the menu to serve us, it was exceptionally disappointing. For example, the skate fish dish (which I usually adore) was inedible due to texture, temperature and appearance (my wife referred to some dishes as tepid), the pork belly looked appetising in appearance but was too fatty and undercooked, initial dishes were all cold including the scallops (not experienced this before), etc... As far as I recollect, the asking price was $300 or thereabouts. One my ask why I didn't complain at the time. To be honest, I just wanted to get the check and go, as a further, later rendezvous was on the cards. Ultimately, staff good, food bad! This doesn't work I'm afraid.

Enjoyed our Thanksgiving prix fixe meal at Recette. The dining room is cozy but comfortable. Our meal, minus the deconstructed green bean casserole (not on par with the rest of the courses) was very good. The Autumn Coupe cocktail was seasonally refreshing, and our server topped off my glass of Pinot noir when she noticed an imbalance between the final course and my near-empty glass. True to the spirit of the day--and I was grateful. All in all, a lovely, friendly Thanksgiving experience. Would do it again.

Dishes were small as expected for a tasting menu, flavors were just ok, didnt have a wow factor, overpriced menu, ambiance was good, really expensive wine menu so I brought my own wine in which the cockage fee was almost as much as the wine itself. Over all it was just ok, a one time experience for me.

HUGE disappointment - don't waste your money unless you love overpriced food combined with VERY loud bad rock music and the most unfriendly staff !!!! Let's start with the good stuff: good food (but v small portions) and they had white truffles on the menu which I love - that's about it !! Now for the not so good stuff please be patient - We were there on 10/31 at 7pm we had made a reservation for 4ppl at open table but we were 5. When we arrived at 7pm the place was totally empty with the exception of 2 couples sitting at separate tables- the hostess offered us a table by the entrance door which was the worst table at the rest abating so we asked whether it would be possible to be seated at a banquette - albeit the restaurant was basically empty the answer was negative because all the banquettes had been previously reserved :-( after letting us wait standing for several minutes the hostess gave us the second worst table - which was located by the kitchen entrance where one could hear Latin music in conjunction with the loud heavy rock music playing in the main room .After ordering 2 rounds of drinks most of us went for the chef's suggestions for the day - We were having a terrible time listening to one another because of the terribly loud rock music (AND the background music coming from the kitchen) so we asked whether it would be possible to change the music NO! Or lower the music NO! Or turning off the music coming from the kitchen NO! We ordered a bottle of wine -at that time the place was still empty with exception of 4 other clients on the old side - so we asked again to have the music lowered given it was just a few clients having dinner NO!! - No wonder all the "reserved" tables never showed up !! It won't last last long !!!

Chose Recette looking for something "French" --ish in NYC to meet friend and family for a Sunday and found this enterprising choice. Creative plats including a "twist" on Grilled Cheese sandwich of buratta and more, "twist" on the Bloody Mary; instead featured a "Berkshire Mary" that was a yum (that was the ISH) French part was the name of the restaurant, quality of ingredients and other menu items that we missed. Would go back.

This is the third or fourth time we've dined at Recette and it was as wonderful as I remembered it to be in the past, but this time, the food was even better than I remembered. We were four and did the seven course tasking menu. Our server was excellent and the service overall would have been excellent too if the spacing between courses earlier on was tighter. The variety of the courses, and the flavors within were awesome. The cold corn chowder was a winner, as was the spring pea raviolo, and I would def recommend a house cocktail called the Vert. One of our favorite aspects was the underlying heat (spice) in a couple of dishes including the dessert (phenomenal). I really enjoy how they do it at Recette.

In a city of resplendent restaurants, Recette is without peer. Why, you might ask. The food is inventive -- a melange of flavors assembled with care and whimsy. The portions are stunningly generous -- not something that can always be said about tasting menus. The service is attentive without ever veering into the cloying or pretentious. In fact, much like the food, it may be the city's finest service. Can't imagine a lovelier venue for a special evening.

With a good ambiance, lighting and decoration, this restaurant is a good neighborhood find for a calm and quiet night. The food was also good, as well as their service. I tried the duck fingerlings and arugula salad, which were OK, and the best was the pork belly, which was very well cooked and seasoned although not very well garnished. As the title says Good not Spectacular.
