This was it. The last night. It was an honor to eat there one last time, and we even got to hear a few words from the Chef as he fought back tears. Such a lovely evening. Recess will be missed.
A fond farewell to Greg and the Recess crew.
You have enhanced our lives.
Thanks & cheers.
it was as wonderful as it always is. Terribly sad it is closing. I hope Greg will find other ways to share his amazing talent.
Recess is closing. Expected a little bit better but owner appears to be going through the motions. I suspect he is embarrassed and disappointed he could not keep this fine dining establishment open.
Arguably the best restaurant in Indy. Greg Hardesty is the most innovative, yet consistently on the mark chefs around. So unfortunate for us that he has decided to move on. But good for him and his family.
Great food as always. Our waiter was outstanding. We will miss this place. Thank you, Chef Greg Hardesty, and good luck moving forward.
The food was very good, ingredients very adventurous. I don't think I would pay that price tag again but I'm really glad we got the chance before they close.
Wonderful Valentine's Day! Sad they are closing! Our server was great also!
Excellent, per usual. Sad to see it go... Looking forward to Chef Hardesty popping up randomly around town in his retirement.
Sorry to see it close!
I'm not sophisticated enough to understand the menu, but always delicious! Thank you for the great experience each time we visited Recess! I'm not the biggest foodie, but really appreciate all of your restaurants over the last 15 years.
Chef Hardesty and his team will be missed!
Reviews don't matter - they're closing next week! Go while you still can...
Only one week left until this gem closes their doors! We wish Greg much success with his future endeavors! We've loved Recess and we're sorry to see it close!
It will be quite a loss to the foodie community when Recess closes its doors. Be sure to visit soon!
If you desire Indy's most creatively delicious and upscale meal with the best service and atmosphere, you had better get on the waiting list! Recess will always be the best!
Devour Indy was going on when we went so there was a discounted special menu that offered only a choice between a cheeseburger or fried fish (fluke). There was supposed to be a first course choice between a Caesar salad or bean soup... The bean soup was crossed off the menu and it was relatively early in the night. I made the assumption that the Devour menu was in addition to the regular menu but it wasn't. Burger or fish with a salad $30, no other options (dessert was an extra $12). Bottom line is that this place is closing in a week or so and it's obvious that the chef has lost his passion. I wish I could have tried it when it was on top. But regrettably it doesn't come close to living up to the hype.
The combination of quality and quantity did not match the expensive price tag. Not going back
I had not been to Recess in about 6 months or so. I used to go A LOT because every meal was amazing. But this experience was just ok. I am hoping it was due to devour DT.
Minimal menu because of Devour Indy. Food was good, but not up to normal quality. Pricy based on the meal. No raw bar anymore!
Fabulous meal and service. Outstanding blending of flavors!!!!!!!!
Perhaps it was the kitchen's fault, but service was very slow even though I ordered the set menu. Not a problem on past visits.
We had a great meal at Recess last Saturday. The menu is limited but the food is delicious. You can take the daily prix fix with or without wine pairings or if you're not that hungry you can order ala cart from the prix fix. Menu changes daily. Not the place for someone only wanting a steak. This is a foodie restaurant at very good value. Good wine list and friendly service.
Some of the best food ever. Amazing service and also perfect wine pairings. My rye manhattan was perfectly executed, as was my husband's martini.
The Sea bass and beef were excellent. great salad and service. The place was empty on a Tues. night but c'est la vie. We will be back!
Recess consistently continues to be one of Indianapolis's most amazing restaurants. Easy to get to, easy to park, and so comfortable inside. The food is both exotic and filling...giving the diner a double whammy of WOW. Last night we had an amazing double fish course, both courses were delicate and powerful in their own right-each was just as good as the other. Bookended by a simple but lovely salad and a mind blowing dessert. Nobody does it like Greg Hardesty. If you want a sure thing, here is where to come.
With the menu ever-changing, you are always in for quite the ride here. The food is cooked perfectly and the combination of flavors is mind blowing.
Food was excellent! Highly recommend the wine pairing! Mushroom salad - tartar- sirloin and halibut. Decent service - somewhat slow but it was New Years
3 of the 4 courses were great, but the fish course was a little bland. However, at $68 a person it was over priced.
Fantastic as always. My favorite place. I Always get the wine pairing and I am never disappointed.
Great place with good food. Good for dates and casual dinner. Service was great but the food/drinks are way overpriced!
Great server, exceptional food (and drinks), overall it was a very pleasant experience of fine dining!
The food, the service, the atmosphere were all superb. It was the perfect spot for meeting old friends and new. It was interesting eating the same thing as everyone else at the table. My old friend has food allergies and the staff took care of her needs as well. Will definitely be coming back!
We very much enjoyed the menu with the wine pairings. The food is outstanding and service is spot on. Very nice find as a visitor to Indianapolis. If we lived here, Recess would be a weekly go to restaurant.
It was as close to perfect as a meal can be.
Great food, overpriced. Would likely not return, however it was a good experience.
Wasn't impressed. Little food for the high prices and no real options to order ala carte. We were still hungry post meal.
Recess is without a doubt the best restaurant in Indianapolis. Every dish is impeccably prepared and delicious. The wait staff is knowledgable and friendly. The wine list is unique and outstanding. We love to bring our foodie friends from out-of-town to Recess. They are always impressed this restaurant.
Based upon others reviews we chose Recess. Big mistake. Food was served cold. That was bad enough but the steak I ordered came tasting like seafood. VERY expensive for a little tiny portion on a very large plate
WOW! I found Recess when looking for James Beard nominees and wasn't disappointed. My wife and I had the four course meal with wine paring and it turned out to be one of the best meals we've had. The decor is sparse, but wait staff are attentive, friendly and knowledgable about the food and wine. This is definitely a come back place when we're in Indianapolis.
