Rays on the Bay Ratings and Reviews
Stayed at this hotel and decided to have dinner here on the last night of our vacation. Can't beat the atmosphere and the view of the Manta Rays swimming in the bay. Food is good, not great. Musician was good, but overall atmosphere was fairly loud. If you are staying at the Sheraton or nearby, check it out!
Great place for maitais!! They are very smooth yet potent! If you reserve a table try asking for ocean side to get a view of the mantas at night. Food is OK. Some hits and some misses. Atmosphere cant be beat - it does get a little warm by the fire tables. Good musicians provide background music.
Even with a standing reservation, they never contacted us to explain that the restaurant was closed. Instead, they did a bait-and-switch and directed us to an ajoining restaurant. The lady at the counter was unsympathetic and didn't offer any appology. The food manager did apologize and the waiter was perfect. The food was also good, but maybe a complementary drink would have been appropriate.
Restaurant was under construction and were not able to see the space. They placed us in a next door restaurant that unfortunately was not up to par. There were wild cats inside the dining room!! apparently this is an issue around this location. Yikes!
It would have been nice to get notified of the construction before arriving. The Sheraton hotel looked nice and welcoming. What made is special was the service and the great burger and drinks. Call ahead of time!
We booked this restaurant so that we could sit on the terrace and watch the sunset as well as see the mante rays at night. Our reservation was confirmed, we drove two hours to the restaurant and was told that it was closed while they did some refinishing work on the terrace. We were directed to the restaurant next door. We enjoyed our dinner - it was delicious, but it was not the ambience or service we were expecting. It would have been nice to have been told that the restaurant was closed. We enjoyed ourselves anyway and our second waiter was wonderful!
I heard this restaurant is famous for its location and it was the reason I made a reservation here.
But it was on renovation however nobody told me in advance. I had dinner at other location where the restaurant moved temporarily but the server forgot to bring my course menu we were so starving!
Food was tasty though but they should've noticed the renovation in advance!!
Rays on the bay is closed for renovations and they did not inform us that any reservations will be handled by another restaurant with limited menu selections. This really was poor service and was very disappointing since the reservation was to celebrate my wife's Birthday.
I was very dissatisfied, First I stayed at your hotel with my two daughters and granddaughter.
One thing I wanted to do was to eat at Rays On The Bay. Guess what? When we got there we
found Rays On The Bay closed for construction and what you call Rays On The Bay was in the
dinning room where breakfast Is served. What a big let down. Second problem was after ordering drinks and getting them the waitress left and it took almost half an hour for her to
come back and take the order. After order was taken it took an hour and twenty six minutes to
get our order. We saw others coming in after us ordering and getting their food. We were there
for about three and a half hours and did not even wait for desert as we were so mad and upset.
Never will I ever go to Rays On The Bay and will not ever have anything good to say about
your place. You have a great web site it is just to bad you did not live up to it.
We got all dressed up and headed over to Ray's on the Bay for our reservation only for them to tell us it's closed for renovations. Why wouldn't anyone notify us of this? I made my reservation at least 2 months ahead of time, so they KNEW we had it. No call, no email, no voicemail to let us know. Incredibly disappointed in their lack of communication.
Our experience was not good. We were not informed that the restaurant had moved and that you no longer had views of the bay and the sting rays. Once we arrived and found the new location it took our server approximately 15 to 20 minutes to come to our table and ask for our drink order. Food was only mediocre for the price. Music was nice but since the new location was no longer open air the music was WAY to loud and made conversation with others in my party difficult. All together not the dining experience I was hoping for.
The service was poor and the food was mediocre. We did not get our second round of drinks requested and the check was incorrect. We were looking forward to this meal and were disappointed. We had reservations for the following week and canceled them. The only thing saving the night was the ambiance.
Requested Oceanside seating for two when reservation was made. Got what was probably the best table in the house. The food was excellent flavor and presentation. The menu is limited, but I suspect the chef is of the "small menu done very well" school. The service was great right up until a large party was seated which occupied some of the servers time. Understandable and not that much of a problem. Prices were what you should expect at a Big Island hotel restaurant.
Was disappointed that we did not see any Manta Rays. Our reservation was at 6pm and we stayed until 9! Be advised that the lights don't turn on till appx 830pm and still have to wait for all the boats with night divers to leave before the rays come into the bay.
The food was good, but not great. The prices were high for the amount of food served.
What a special treat, really good food and amazing after dinner appearance of manta rays. We reserved here because of the rays, and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the dinner. We started with the ahi poke appetizer and salad, both quite tasty, followed by the fish special, which was opah (moonfish), and blackened ahi. The opah was outstanding with bok choy, local mushrooms, rice and lobster. The ahi was prepared with typical blackened spices but included a curry vinaigrette; the flavors seemed to fight for attention instead of working together. Bananas Foster for dessert was a nice finish. Around 8:30 pm the restaurant turns lights on the bay which attracts plankton on which the mantas feed. Our table was on the viewing deck, so we only had to walk a few steps to watch the rays have their dinner. It was a dark night with hardly any moon so the rays were a bit hard to spot when they swam upright as their backs are black, but fortunately they also swam upside down showing their white undersides. Overall, a special dinner and after dinner treat.
The view was great. We had an ocean side table as we requested. The drinks were well made and the staff very friendly, attentive and informative about the area, food, and the Manta rays. Our salad and appetizer were fantastic. Or steaks were gristly and a bit overcooked. We felt the quality wasn't worth the bill.
Not worth the money. We knew it was going to be a bit overpriced just to "experience" the stingray viewing at night. But the other commercial tour companies have sabotaged that experience by bringing night diving, etc a little bit further out in the Bay so the rays don't come near the restaurant. And half of the Rays outdoor lights didn't work so it wasn't lit up enough anyway. The service was slow, impersonal and the food was not of the quality warranted for their prices. And, there were ferral cats wandering around the patio tables begging for food.
We went early to have a drink at the bar and that service was extremely slow & lacked personality as well. Overall, we would not return even if the rays were visible. We don't mind paying high prices for dining experiences and quality food/service, but this was lacking in every way and not worth the money. Buyer beware.
Don't usually eat a lot of fish. But, every time I try it out in Hawaii, it never disappoints. Blackened Hawaiian Ahi dish was amazing. Paired also with a white wine. Wife also enjoyed the chicken dish, also with another nice aromatic white wine. With seating next to the water, it made for a memorable evening and a great atmosphere.
This was a wonderful experience - LOVED watching the Manta Rays once the tourist boats left - was a totally different experience from what we had on the boat. Was amazing to see the Rays swim across the bay hunting for food. This is a definite MUST-DO! Food and service were good - but stay for the show after dark!!!
We were there for our 10th year anniversary dinner. Requested Bayside seating. Staff was great about knowing it was our 10-year anniversary and addressed it upon our arrival. The staff made sure to move us once Bayside seating was available. Was really appreciated them paying that much attention to my request.
