Rays on the Bay
Hostess must have been having a really bad day. She seemed upset by those who didn’t have reservations, and very snippy with people who asked when they would be seated. We checked in for our 7:00 reservation and she never gave us a status update, even when a half hour had passed and we were still not seated. I wasn’t about to inquire after seeing her behave so rudely to others. Finally seated us at a high top even though we requested a regular table, and when I asked if there was a regular table available, she glared and said I CAN’T KICK PEOPLE OUT EVEN IF THEY’RE HERE TOO LONG! Um, duh. I get how this works; I just asked. Food was fine, nothing special. Standard Hawaiian “fancy” restaurant fare and overpriced. No manta rays visible while we were there, which was disappointing but not the restaurant’s fault.
The food was good but the serving for the price was minimal. The mixed drinks were diluted. The mantis now that was neat. For 2 people, with tip, $158 & we had snack when we arrived back at the condo. We are not big eaters but no salad, bread, or vegetable with meal...literally an entree.
Service just wasn’t snappy. Could have used a busboy.
Food was really good. Mac attack outstanding. Wagu burger sufficient. Tuna and salad great. The best part was the mana rays that showed up at sunset. Great show.
Excellent, food, view, ambiance, waiting staff
Experience was absolutely wonderful!!!
Spectacular views. Food was good but not spectacular. Server was very congenial--liked her a lot but I think the dining room is understaffed. Servers seemed to be run off their feet. The bar also seems to be understaffed. Drinks took a long time to arrive. Server apologized and said the bar was backed up. We had seafood risotto, dynamite shrimp, burrata salad with side
of prawns, edamame. Risotto was a bit bland although there was lots of seafood on it. Edamame was well flavoured. Dynamite prawns were good and a good sized serving for an appy. The best part was the view and also the cats were cute. We didn't see any manta rays. Liked it enough that we would go back.
Great experience to see sunset then manta rays from the same table👍
I am a resident of Hawaii and amazed at the poor level of restaurant amenities that are presented to visitors. The food was very expensive and the ambience was nil. Plastic tables and chairs more suited to a diner. The big draw is viewing the dive boats? I was deeply disappointed and will not return nor will I recommend to anyone. I guess they get one shot at guests and don't care if they return.
It was amazing eating out on the patio work the manta rays coming up!
The only good thing is the setting of the restaurant. The prices were exorbitant for what was offered. I had the waygu burger. It was good but too thin a burger for the price. The seafood risotto was a disgrace. It was steamed rice drowned in a creamy gravy with large pieces of fish and very little seafood. Service was okay but the hostess desk people were rude, slow, and more concerned with giving the waiters equal tables than fulfilling a guest's request. We desired an table that was also empty rather than the we were escorted to. Not only were we told we couldn't have it because it would be in another waiter's section but if we didn't like our table we could go back to the desk and wait in rotation. I'll never know why we just didn't walk out.
Service was lacking. Wrong entree brought out by a server assistant, but our waitress was nowhere to be found for approx 15 minutes creating a very awkward scenario. My wife& I did want to start eating while our guest had receieempty & we wanted to order ved the wrong food. Also, our wine glasses were empty & no waitstaff with whom we could order refills. We had even asked a passing hostess who was seating some other diners if she could find our waitress...but it was another 10 minutes before she finally appeared. She was very apologetic, & told us how busy she was...but the restaurant, overall, was barely 1/2 full.
Anyway, she quickly brought our guests correct meal & a couple glasses of complimentary wine. Not their best day.
Great dinner!! Had up front table for best view, but BIG waves closed some areas & not much ray sightings.
Overall this was great for us as we are vegetarian and there were 4-5 excellent options at a reasonable price point. The dishes were well prepared and beautiful. The setting is lovely and the service was good. Portion sizes were excellent, although I am not a huge eater so it was perfect for me and my husband.
It was a windy and wavy night so we did not get to see the Rays but it was still worth going here.
Amazing! Fantastic food, excellent views.
It is a nice restaurant in a stunning location that has a few minuses. First, the good: The view of the sunset and the rays are sublime. The service was excellent. The food for dinner was very good and prepared correctly. Now, the bad: Breakfast buffet was mediocre and it was difficult to find a clean plate. The omelette station was good though. The chairs have horizontal wooden slats which are very uncomfortable on the back and there is little padding on the seat so one's bottom gets sore (and I have plenty of natural padding). The overhead music is too loud. It detracts from the beauty of the view and makes conversation somewhat difficult. The band or similar ensemble is even louder and very intrusive. We could hear it in our room above quite plainly. Lastly, and it might seem petty but I think it is just lame, I was charged $2 extra for requesting bok choy instead of kale. It's not so much the money but the principle of the thing and I was not told or I would have just passed on the veggie. Btw, the poolside bar charges you for every pop (soda) you get and it is mostly ice. Again, just not something a place should do.
So, if you don't mind the annoyances I pointed out, go. The view, service and food are worth it.
Good but not great
Wonderful place to watch sunset. Great vegan options on the menu.
We had an amazing sunset dinner for my husband's birthday. We went specifically for the vegan menu and were treated to an amazing full course vegan meal. The roasted cauliflower entree was one of the best vegan meals I have ever had! After the meal, we watched manta rays gliding in the bay below from the restaurant's overlook. It was a truly magical experience!
Can not see manta
Outstading service especially attitude for customer
Ray's was a bit of a disappointment. First of all they asked what was the occasion and I placed on the thing it was my 30th anniversary, why ask me if you were not going to acknowledge it. The food was not very good for my taste which made me a little sad because I felt we are right in the heart of seafood and I was really disappointed. The ambience was disappointing because they kept allowing people to just stand in the way as they wanted to see the waves. Just all in all disappointed.
We had a wonderful night at Rays on the Bay. Great table with a fire pit that was surprisingly good to have. Who knew a fire pit would feel good in Hawaii!! I had the seafood risotto and it was awesome. My wife had a steak ordered rare and it was done perfectly accompanied by fantastic garlic mashed. And the bread is differently worth the calories. Views are awesome even though the deck was closed due to high surf. If you are in Kona, don’t miss Rays!!!
Amazing atmosphere! Nowhere else in the world can you see manta rays while sipping a cocktail and enjoying dinner.
Service was very poor and slow and when food arrived it was cold. The view was amazing but wouldn't stay for anything past cocktails.
Great ambience - awaiting the appearance of the Manta Rays is so exciting. Food, delicious.
Great time of year for out side dining. The staff friendly and welcoming. No manta rays the evening we dined there. It is a hotel so we expect to pay more, but the portions were minuscule.
This was a weird experience. The food and service was excellent, as we’ve experienced previously. However, this time there was a wedding party on the observation deck. So while on one side of the restaurant was the calm, sweet music from the regular live musician the restaurant normally has, on the other side was “boots and pants” dance music from the wedding party. It just didn’t create the ambience you expect from Rays. I personally prefer the sweet music from the guitar player, especially when he plays Hawaiian music.
Ambiance amazing, ocean and hillside view spectacular. Complimentary Sheraton Valet. Food overpriced for value, but decent. But didn’t mind that food was so so with the spectacular view, even at night the view is amazing.
Overrated Poor menu selections
As VEGANS, we usually find ourselves underwhelmed at most restaurants. Typically, the chefs don't offer planned vegan options on their menus....while some will "accommodate"vegans by "leaving off the cheese" or a few may tell us they can substitute tofu instead of the meat or seafood in a salad, and that is truly a let down.
But NOT Ray's On The Bay !!
In addition to their impressive regular dinner menu offerings...
Ray's actually has 3 creative and interesting VEGAN entree options on the menu. We had two of them and they were TERRIFFIC !! Additionally, the service was knowledgeable and super efficient. We are now Raving Fans of Ray's and reccomend it to everyone !
Service was slow, food ordered came out wrong, and seemed overpriced. A meal for four people with one glass of wine and a few non-alcoholic drinks came to just under $300. We paid the same for a beautiful gourmet meal at Top of Waikiki the week before. We were pretty disappointed. Lots of potential here, just not well executed.
Conrad is awesome, best server we could have asked for!
Food was not good no favor very expensive not worth it location is beautiful rays were amazing maybe you pay for that music was great
Would not go back or recommend
Love this place & food is consistently good! I live in Kona & it has become my favorite place to go for special celebrations!
Fabulous! We were treated well, food was super, great fun watching the lit boats looking for rays.
Starting the "experience"; expectations were parallel with the propaganda dispersed throughout the hotel and Kona area. The entry and hostess stand complimented this, but, as only a facade to what was coming. The restaurant was nearly baron on, what should be, a busy holiday night. After a thirst developing 10 plus minutes to be greeted, our thirst only grew for the next ten minutes to see wine list; another 7-8 minutes passed before our bottle of pinot noir was haphazardly opened, not let to breathe, even a second, before it was hastily splashed into the glass, like a cheap beer; without a sniff or customary sampling prior to pour. The $7 bread was tasty but better can be found at Outback (for free). The very limited menu was peppered with elegant explanations of preparations that only stood to substantiate the inflated prices. The food came in small portions that looked as if they came out of the troughs at country buffet, vegetables were drastically over-cooked, my filet was undercooked. This was consistent with my wife's entree as well. The pre-prepared dessert was delightful as was the coffee, which, at times, I thought they had to venture to the hills of Kona to fetch some more and roast it, considering the length of time it took to bring to our table. The setting is unique and one-of-a-kind, and worth a look. I don't mind paying for good food or a unique experience, whatever the cost. I would not recommend Rays on the Bay to anyone unless you don't care what your food looks or tastes like.
Music was the best! Glad we went. Food was pretty good. French fries were the Best I have had in a while! Didn’t have a gluten free bun for the burger and the lettuce to use as the bun was a bit small. Would go back if Keoni Thompson is performing. Loved the location. That’s why the menu is so pricey.
The Sheraton and Rays all in need of some updates decor - but food always well prepared and flavorful. Expensive - $7 bucks for bread and $50 entrees. But the view makes up for it.
We had reservations for 8:15 and when we arrived we were seated right away.
I hate when you get seated at the first table that they see open when there where so many others in a non obtrusive location then the one we where in.
We waited for someone to come and bring bread, water something. Waited for 10 minutes and still nothing.
Finally a waiter came and we asked if we could sit on one of the other tables and after my son showed him the table he agreed. He disappeared again for another 10 minutes and then came back and told us that our table was ready.
We ordered the ahí tuna for appetizer which was very good. My wife and I shared the seafood risotto which was also excellent. My son had shrimp and fish which also very good.
When the risotto came I asked the waiter for a spoon to use. He brought back a “teaspoon”.
The meal in its self was excellent but the service was very poor
