I have had several great meals at Rats, this was not one of them. The parking lot was jammed and the restaurant was crowded and a little loud. We asked our server for a suggestion regarding one of the signature cocktails, we asked if the one we were thinking of ordering was on the sweet side and we were assured it was. It was not, it was one of those that taste like paint thinner. we sent it back and it was deducted from the bill but a server should not pretend to know about a cocktail that she has definitely never tasted herself. We pre-ordered the clam bake special, (someone from Rats called us after making the reservation to ask if we wanted it). When it came to the table it was in a metal pot with a smaller metal dish for a lid. Nice presentation. Inside there was a corn on the cob cut into quarters, a hand full of tiny potatoes some shrimp, some clams and some mussels in a clam broth. But one of the two meals we were served was so under cooked as to have a half raw lobster tail on top and several raw shrimp. I sent it back and after a considerable wait was presented with the exact same metal pot with a new way over cooked lobster tail tossed on top of the same food I sent back. The broth was now a burnt mess stuck to the bottom of the pot. the seafood was now all very overdone. I just ate what I could. It was very disappointing. On the positive side the bread/popover was very good with the excellent herb butter. And the app. escargot was sweet and delicious. We had the lemon tart and creme brulee, both were very good but we had to ask the guy who delivered it to our table (not our server) for silverware to eat it with and he brought us two of the hugest spoons i have ever been given with a dessert, it took a while to find an flag down our server and she explained that we could have some teeny demitasse spoons or the shovels we already had because the kitchen had run out of silverware. All in all a very disappointing trip to an upscale location.
Love it here! The ambience and food are fantastic!! We go here for special occasions. It’s worth it every single time.
As always, the setting is magnificent and the staff delightful...BUT
What happened to the food?
The "new menu" is not conducive to lunch and when tasted....not good.
Please Bring back the previous chef!!
We were seated on the patio and honestly it was like being in France at Giverny. Absolutely lovely. The service was excellent. The food was average. It’s worth it for the lovely grounds and general atmosphere.
Love Rat’s beautiful place.
Enjoyed dining outside
Service was excellent along with the food
Price was a little high though.
Rats has been a high end, wonderful eating experience until recently, pre and post pandemic. The hosting staff was poorly dressed and messy, disorganized, 4 different people could to properly communicate a 7:30 PM reservation with only one other group at the desk.
Our waiter was inaudible and impossible to hear and did not follow our requests. Repeat requests and he was snide. He was also not properly, neatly or cleanly put together in appearance.
The food was passable with the the waiter and another server unable to properly place any of our items at the place of the correct diner.
I always give a place a couple chances when they have been consistently a favorite. Mess ups happen and some night some waiters and such are just not on their game. My last experience at Rats was fall 2019 and it also did not meet my expectations from my past dinning at Rats.
Our fellow diners, most properly dressed and appropriately behaved, but the table next to us had your children running about and the father in a t shirt and baseball hat. Not what was the norm in the past.
Very disappointing and will not return. Price point remains high bu experience not of the same quality as the price would suggest.
I had an amazing birthday dinner! Service was excellent and food was of course delicious, per usual. I had a lovely happy birthday plate with my dessert which made it feel extra special!
The ambiance of Rats is outstanding. We were given a nice table facing the pond and the staff knew it was our anniversary and congratulated us. There is a mister that brings mist from the pond which dampened our seats. This was slightly bothersome but I did not mind that much. Other guests might. The ambiance and staff are top notch. However, the food was not very flavorful, not bad just not much going on. I ordered the Cauliflower masala which was very bland, it even needed salt. The grilled octopus was OK, nothing special.
Excellent ambiance, good staff, food; not so much.
This was our second visit. The waiter we had was not attentive. The food was brought out by kitchen staff and the waiter didn’t check with us for 10 minutes after receiving the food. The fettuccine was overcooked and the pesto sauce was overpowering. The hanger steak was tasty and cooked as requested. Drinks took a long time to receive and refills even longer. Somewhat disappointed in the visit this time especially since it was a special occasion.
Had high hopes for this restaurant since it’s on beautiful grounds but the food wasn’t great especially for the price. Honestly I think the cafe offered better food for the price.
Went to grounds of sculpture and made a lunch reservation for my family. We enjoyed everything, delicious wine, mock tails for the kids, cheese and charcuterie board to start. The cauliflower curry with quinoa was delicious. Finished it off with a lemon tart. Very enjoyable, didn’t feel rushed, service was amazing. Shout out to Cassandra!
The best lunch & service & ambience I've had in years! Highly recomend.
Our expectations were rather low because we thought of it as a museum restaurant. We were happily surprised that the food and ambiance is outstanding! Took a rest from enjoying Grounds for Sculpture and had a delicious and lovely lunch.
Dining at Rat’s was a nice experience and we will go back. That said, while my wife’s scallops were perfect, my dorado (fish) was over cooked and dry. At the start, our server brought a plate and butter but then no bread. When questioned later he said they didn’t provide bread because we had ordered a cheese plate (that made no sense to us). While the overall ambience was great, there was some nice music playing off to our right but then we got blasted by rock music coming from the bar. It was not pleasant and while I looked there was no one to ask to shut off one of them. Our server was mostly absent during our dinner, I can not say we felt attended to. And while I expected to spend a fair amount for dinner, what we were charged was significantly out of line for the value we received,
Thank you for dining with us and for your feedback. We apologize that we fell short on your experience. We are having staffing issues right now as many restaurants are. Please try us again in the future!!
We celebrated our 10 years dating and it was great! I felt like the food was good but nothing that we tried felt like it was worth the high pricing, but we enjoyed it. I definitely wish we had eaten outside, but that was because of when we placed the reservation, the day before, not because of anything they did wrong. Best part: Absolutely amazing service! I wish I knew the name of her server he was amazing!
We are happy you enjoyed everything and hope to see you soon!!
The outdoor seating was beautiful. Food was delicious and the bar area has a great vibe.
Had a fantastic time at the restaurant last night for my birthday.
Food was delicious.
It was a $200 dinner for the two of us.
4 diners for 60th wedding anniversary. Our table was near the bar. Poor seating arrangements because that area served as a thoroughfare for individuals who were visiting the Grounds For Sculpture. The human traffic was constant and those persons were practically on top of us. It was loud and noisy to eat in that environment and the constant rush of people walking through never let up. It was unpleasant to say the least. Escargot appetizer was excellent. Griggstown Chicken, Duck and Hanger Steak entrees were good. The Seafood Risotto was a big disappointment. Not worth the $36.00 cost for a bowl of mostly bland rice. To be precise 1 ring of calamari, 2 cut pieces of a full shrimp, the crab did not make an appearance in this dish and two forkfuls of lobster. Cream brûlée and mango sorbet deserts were tasty. Martinis were good as was the Merlot. Total cost of the mediocre dining experience well over $300.00. I was really expecting something special for my in-laws ~ the ambiance for our table location made our dining experience a regrettable one. I felt inclined to apologize to my in-laws as I was sorry that I choose to dine here.
Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry we fell short on your dining experience. Please give us another try in the future.
We are still so excited about our date night last night . Our first time here and it was lovely. Although we could not get an outdoor table we sat near the back deck overlooking the fish pond. The lady at the front desk/hostess was not very cordial as we arrived and asked about the history of the restaurant. She pointed to a framed picture in the left corner of the desk to let us know we could find the information about restaurant in the picture. Very odd….She also seemed annoyed and was visibly frustrated when Placing her hands on her temples like she was stressed. She Then told us we could stand over and away from the hostess stand while they got our table ready. We stood for at least 5 mins before another hostess asked if we had to be seated, seems like she forgot about us.
The food and wine was delicious. The cheese platter was not worth it. Our server was excellent. We drove an hour to enjoy the restaurant and sculpture garden. It was well worth it.
food great. service real bad. waiter forgot second app. didn"t come back to entree. then wrong dinner. staff needs a good kick. they stink....
Consistently delicious gourmet food in a beautiful, whimsical setting. It is lovely to spend the day at Grounds for Sculpture and cap it off with a wonderful meal at Rat’s.
A really nice experience overall. I called and asked for a romantic table for 2 for a special anniversary. We ended up with a table set for 6 people with just the 2 of us at it. As we were sitting down two people were being seated ( not a romantic couple it appeared of any type) at the romantic table for 2 next to us... Food was good not great.
We went to celebrate 2 birthdays. We have called and let the staff know few days before. We also reminded them when we arrived. The dessert came with 1 guy delivering it 1 candle is not lit up. No singing nothing.. it was disappointing actually given the efforts we put in to let them know it was a birthday celebration. .Service was extremely slow. food was decent not great. Definitely we will pick another place next time..
Everything and everyone at Rat's was amazing. The hostess was so sweet to our daughter. Our waiter was full of energy and accommodating. We were lucky to have beautiful seats along the pond which added to the experience. The food was delicious, service was exceptional. We will definitely be back!
Magical place upscale diners antique charm with high quality food. Started with amazing escargot and cheese plate and a bottle of wine chilled next to our table. Tool a stroll around their own private pond and garden. Even stopped at the bar met several couples and some good laughs. Highly recommend date as i took my fiancé and she loved it.
Everyone should experience Rats at least once. It was a fun lunch with my friends along with wonderful food and service.
Beautiful ambiance and excellent service. Be sure to walk the grounds in the back. your allowed. :)
Started off with Mezze and Cheese / Chracuterie followed by chopped salad with steak ( perfect med rare ) 1 with very good chicken , and Cauliflower entrees . Rats always does an excellent job with their mocktails and they are very well thought out and delicious. Marco and Maynor are amazing at their craft and making you feel right at home. Eduardo the back server is awesome as well. Kudos to the culinary team including pastry .. the lemon tart with fresh blueberries , profiteroles with vanilla bean ice cream and chocolate ganache were all on point
The gardens look amazing and the pavers are a great addition! When peacock cafe is closed consider a beverage cart with waters , bars , etc ..
I had the charcuterie with cheese, chicken salad sandwich and chocolate torte with raspberries. Service was very very attentive. Food tasted delicious. Highly recommend reservations
ai loved rats since it opened. last night, the staff was very accomidating, and the he ambiance was as good as ever. However , We waited far far too long for our entrees, and mistakes were made in more than one order. Entrees are also more expensive now... mire than necessary, i think for hat they are. disappointed
I am a little fisapointed but hope to have a better experience next time
A lot of fun! Really friendly and attentive staff. Made a birthday celebration truly memorable.
We had a wonderful meal diver scallops and seafood risotto. Our server Jenn was a sweetheart. Sitting outside next to the pond was so beautiful and relaxing.
We had reservations for my husband’s birthday. We sat outside on the patio overlooking the beautiful pond. Hannah was our server and she did a wonderful job. The hummus was incredible! Light and fluffy with a little touch of lemon. I liked my Branzino my husband not so much The food wasn’t up to what we had remembered from some of our early visits to Rat’s but it was still a wonderful evening!
Great food, service and ambiance. Love this place.
Amazing Ambience. Great food and wine. Awesome option for a special evening…Service is great too, just a tad slow. Guess part of the relaxed ambience. Loved it overall !
I love the ambiance! Food was great and service was wonderful!
