All 3 of us had the Coq au Vin and it was exceptional. The gravy was so delicious. It was a rainy Thursday evening and our reservation was early so not a lot of customers. Service was excellent. Everyone who served us was friendly and helpful. A little expensive, but worth splurging once in awhile!
Everyone was so nice and willing to help me make sure that everything I had planned went according to plan. They even helped suggest a few ideas to only make the occasion closer to perfection. They went the extra mile to make sure we were always happy. We were extremely impressed!
Everything was ok considering the busy day. Our waiter Chris was not the best. After being seated for our 3pm reservations we were not even greeted from our waiter for at least 10-15 minutes. On a hot and sweaty day we didn’t even have water to sip on until he arrived 10-15 minutes after being seated. I asked for him to wrap up some cheese fo us and never brought it back. Although I tipped him way more than he deserved his service was subpar at best. I would hope to never get him if we ever return to this over-rated establishment. I asked my girlfriend to marry me this day. I made reservations 2 weeks in advance and Rats new about this. I was hoping for better treatment and way more respect. Thanks but no thanks and you’re welcome for your super awesome tip Chris!! You did not deserve it, but I’m just too nice of a guy I guess. Not the best place, not the worst considering it is the only restaurant there.
When you go, ask for Marco. He is the best. Get a table outside.
We sat outside and the scenery was lovely. Bloody Mary was pretty good. Seafood salad was not as good as expected. Not so flavorful. The seasonal soup was amazing.. Server was nice but the service was slow...
I dont eat here that often as its pretty pricy..
It is really beautiful and a great addition to a day in Grounds For Sculpture..
First time at Rats, though not the first time at Grounds for Sculpture. The restaurant is as wonderful as GFS - From food to service, it is the best. The setting is spectacular, the wait staff is attentive (and we had a brand new waiter), and the experience is like being in Paris without having to fly there! Five stars plus -
Perfect lunch outside with great service! Food always excellent! Always go back...don't miss the experience!
Lovely experience! The setting is so bucolic-modeled after Monet’s Giverny Gardens. Brian was our waiter. The service was wonderful. Maybe the best French onion soup we’ve ever had. Highly recommend dining here.
A bucket-list place we've wanted to try for several years, as many friends rave about it. We were unimpressed, from the bartender who didn't know a current, trending cocktail, to a waiter who was so rote in his delivery it bordered on a recording. The menu is limited but had some moments of creativity; overall I described it as 'French when it wants to be".
A must have are the popovers (aka Yorkshire Pudding). Fresh, delicious, and very unique.
Salad Verte promised greens, herbs, and a dijon vinaigrette. It was incredibly fresh but sadly lacked any influence of the dressing and was overwhelming with mint (change the name to Mojito salad?) Entrees of roast duck, and short ribs au Poivre, were very good but why did the waiter not change out the side dish of the very same salad we just had? Tell the kitchen to sub it for a squash, a rice, even a potato, anything but the same underdressed salad he just served? That is a miss that an experienced, engaged waiter would have addressed.
The local cheese selection was really delicious but served without bread or biscuits. Coconut Panna Cotta was just okay, lacking in flavor or dimension.
The wine list was comprehensive and had many good options.
Finally, the restaurant offers a magnificent view in the back, along with outdoor seating. I imagine it is very popular in warmer seasons. But overall this property is very tired, from the hanging lights to the furniture, and would greatly benefit from an update.
We are fortunate to have many great dining establishments in Central NJ. When I am looking to spend nearly $300 on an evening, regrettably it won't again be with Rats.
The food was delicious and Marco our waiter was very good. I will definally go back.
Such an awesome restaurant! Stephen Starr restaurant, and the menu & food are wonderful. Try the artisan cheese tray, salmon, frittata, soup of the day. The grounds are so unique that you will want to plan to stroll & see the amazing sculptures, ponds, waterfall, wild birds & peacocks. Just a terrific find! Will definitely return!
Rats never disappoints! Great cocktails, nice selection of entrees - not an extensive menu, but something for everyone. Wonderful food, nice portion size - neither too large or too small. The only criticism is the dessert selection - not much for "true" chocoholics, could do with adding one or two selections for "purists". Eclectic ambiance. Can't wait to return!
Beautiful venue. Food was very well thought out but both our dishes were a bit bland. Hard to say at a restaurant but could have used more salt in each dish. However, would definitely go back.
Had a very nice experience for my birthday celebration. Food was excellent as well as our server. Can not wait to go back
Great experience! Loved the food and the surroundings.
All good , especially service and surroundings but not french food as claimed.
What a lovely restaurant, we were pleasantly surprised to find such a gem in this part of NJ. It felt like this should be somewhere in Europe in a quaint small town.
The food was superb and simple, the service was excellent and the ambiance was tranquil but fun.
I wish it was closer to where I live so I can go back often!
Ate there again recently after a long absence. Menu has changed: shorter with more Mediterranean influence than before. But food was excellent, and the atmosphere can't be beat. Sit upstairs if you can; each room is unique.
Consistently excellent. The food was delicious we made excellent choices and the atmosphere was very relaxed there was no rushing and the service was good. Our particular waiter was kind of strange and did not bring the 60th birthday candle that I requested on OpenTable with our dessert. It was fine but most of the other wait staff is far more professional.
Was extremely disappointed. Had been wanting to go here for years, finally went and wish I hadn't. Hubby ordered a salad that was supposed to have radish (he loves radish)...there were none..saw the table next tous get the same salad...man also complained no radish...waiter then brought him a plate of radish for him to add to his salad. Hubby ordered potato and leek ravioli for his entree...it was tasty, but was barely even an appetizer size...literally, had 4 or 5 mini ravioli on the plate! I ordered scallops...got 3 tiny ones and one giant one...the giant one tasted funky so i couldn't even eat it. Ordered panna cotta for dessert...couldn't even eat it...it was nothing like panna cotta should be...it was hard and almost cake like...tasteless like frozen mashed potato...was horrible...no one at the table ate it either. I almost couldn't believe that I was at the same restaurant that I had heard so much about. There were also issues with the other couples at our tables meals.
Based on this meal, I would never go back!
Excellent meal. Squash salad was delicious and Rainbow trout entree with mushroom was a perfect balance. Highly recomend.
We had a wonderful dining experience at Rats this past weekend. The food was excellent and the ambiance was elegant and romantic. Thanks for a wonderful evening.
The food is very good, just don’t expect a lot of it. The popovers they give you are to die for. Great atmosphere and service it’s just overpriced for what you get.
Very nice experience.
We’ve been to Rats several times and have always had a good experience. But the winter 4-course prix-fixe menu is over the top. Excellent food, interesting menu, creative dishes, beautiful presentation and an unbelievable value for the money. My boyfriend and I cook for a living. So it’s rare for us to have a dining experience that leaves us talking about I for days. But this one did. This was our first time dining in the tavern. Very romantic! I highly recommend Rats.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal tonight.
Everything was delicious.
The ambiance and service were excellent.
It was our first time at rats and we will certainly return
This was my second time at this restaurant, and it was just as amazing as the first. On my first visit, I had the Chef tasting menu with wine pairings and that was amazingly amazing which is why I chose to return for my Husbands birthday dinner. The menu was different with a few pre-fixe options with optional wine pairings and it was equally amazing. Both visits were during winter, so now I can't wait to return in spring. I would highly recommend the RATZ.
Late Valentines Day dinner. A very intimate dining experience. Food and service was excellent (as always), but the quieter off season ambience was something that we will remember.
We were a bit disappointed when we were told it was a pre fixed menu (holiday weekend) but... it was amazing!! Many selections to choose from!! 2apps, entree, dessert and it was all excellent. Drinks (martini and margarita) were delicious. Service was great. Atmosphere is great. Been there several times and we will continue to come back!
Beautiful location, outstanding service, and the food was out of this world. Best place for a date.
Everything was great from the servers to the atmosphere, and the food was great. I was , however, a bit surprised and a bit disappointed that there was only 1 scallop on the second course of the tasting menu, especially with an upcharge...I probably wouldn't have been as let down if it was a larger scallop but it was medium sized ao only really could be eaten in one bite, not much in terms of sharing which my wife and I like to do and were able to with most of the rest of the dishes...
We arrived early, and sat at the bar, where we were frustrated with what seemed to be the bartenders' practiced and unrelenting indifference. The wait staff were pleasant, but our waiter skipped a course, and brought dessert too soon. The winter menu is limited but the food is excellent and a terrific bargain.
The food was excellent and the service could not be better.
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Rats. We love the 4-course tasting meal. Our waiter obliged us and added on wine that paired with each course at a very reasonable price. We love the ambiance, the decor, and the building architecture. The food and wine were wonderful. I highly recommend Rats!
Excellent food and atmosphere. A must for those that want great food And drink, this is your spot. Cozy yet not stuffy!
Excellent as always!!
Excellent !!! Had the 4 course winter tasting menu. Simple looking ingredients yet packed with mouth-watering taste. My compliments to the chef!! Donna was very accommodating and willing to give us the tour of the place and gave us helpful hints. Cheryl was great making sure everyone was enjoying their dinner. Jen our waitress was very attentive and helpful. I would definitely go back there. One of my favorite!
I had the duck and it was very tasty but was accompanied be an extremely tough whole onion. I would have appreciated a potato of some sort. Menu is limited. Not many fish options and the scallops were not available.
Below average food for the price. Lobster not cooked to completion and strip steak was supposed to be dry aged but the quality was that of a choice super market steak. For the price it should have been larger and a prime cut.
Service and atmosphere was excellent as always. The place is beautiful. They need to upgrade the quality of the product that they put out. We do not have a problem with the pricing, just need to match it with good quality food.
