Rats Restaurant - Grounds for Sculpture
It was Restaurant week so busy but the service was about the worst I have ever experienced at a restaurant anywhere - a hostess finally took our order after half an hour of waiting and asking different waitstaff to assist us - and it continued to be poor throughout - food was good and ambiance is great - they need to work on service.
It was a surprise for my husband’s 40th birthday and the experience was perfect.
Lovely setting with outstanding ambience! Many eclectic dining rooms each with a different decor. Outdoor patio and bar area is tranquil and picturesque. Service was attentive and friendly. Food was outstanding. Parking is tricky and can be a challenge so drop your party at the door. Reservations are a must ... this place is busy at all times! Highly recommend this restaurant.
The ambiance is lovely but that is the only good part of our experience. After asking not to be seated in the sun on the patio, that’s where we ended up. No umbrella and the sun was strong. The seafood salad at $23 was average in taste and totally overpriced for lunch. A sangria for $13 is ridiculous. My husband’s roast beef sandwich was very skimpy and not worth the price. Service was adequate. Our friend had a burger which he said was very good.
Excellent service, very good food, whimsical entrance to restaurant. Made for a very nice evening with friends.
The food here used to be amazing, but the quality has slipped over the years. My entree featured a freshly cooked piece of meat (good) with room-temperature sides and sauces (unappetizing). The brownie dessert was so hard and stale that I didn't eat much of it (and I love sweets). I shared my concerns regarding the dessert with the waitress; she apologized but no offer was made to try to rectify the situation. Rat's used to be one of our favorite restaurants, but I fear its best days are behind it.
Everything went very well. Very delicious. Thank you.
Awesome first time experience!
Lovely restaurant with a nice selection of entrees and appetizers Food and service are high end.
Outstanding as always. Great value for Restaurant week. Food was excellent service very very good. Thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Food is very over priced and not worth it. Beautiful scenery. Expensive.
Dining at Rat's in a Monet garden / lily pond setting is an extraordinary experience. The French-inspired menu (where three of our five had delicious trout amadine) was incredibly delicious and the service was impeccable. All of us would gladly recommend the experience to anyone and plan to revisit in the near future.
Rats never fails to meet our expectations and then some. Our absolutely favorite place in New Jersey
Excellent atmosphere, service, and food
food was modest
service first class
as a facility first class
Lovely experience. The food was delicious and the atmosphere exquisite.
Restaurant Week at Rats was an opportunity to have a well-made meal paired with some good wine. It was a pre fixe meal and the place was busy for a Tuesday night. Service was gracious. The food was very good-but did not leap to heights as it can do when ordering ala carte here. The wine pairing was fun: a cava rosè poured with a blueberry, chai flavored cake was inspired; the Bordeaux that was poured not so much. But three courses with three wine pairing for $55 at Rat's Restuarant is an incredible deal. We had fun
Beautiful ambiance. Great and attentive service. Food was pretty good but portions were a bit small
We came for the Pre-Fix menu which was an excellent value. The beet salad was excellent. Short ribs even better. Creme Brulee for dessert was the perfect way to end the meal. We sat outside on the patio - perfect night.
Wines paired with food were excellent! Very friendly wait staff, great ambiance
Rats is a great venue inside or out and the menu appears to have a wide and interesting variety of dishes. The escargot and the moules were reasonably tasty but could have used some additional seasonings. The pork schnitzel was cut too thick and was overcooked while the cauliflower steak was served almost cold and undercooked. The service was good although not special in any way and one of the chair (we sat outside) seats was separated from the back of the chair and the metal caught on a dress causing a tear which we did not notice until after we left. All in all there is a lack of attention to detail. Not recommended.
My husband and I both loved everything we ordered. The service was excellent. The grounds and restaurant are beautiful.
Grounds were very interesting and very entertaining. Dinner at Rats was outstanding for atmosphere, service and food. A must do.
I made the reservation over a month earlier but it took over 29 minutes to be seated and then the service was spotty. Slow to take our order and offered bread but none came before the food arrived. Food was well prepared and timely but they delivered s basket of bread at least 5 minutes AFTER our meals had been served and we had ordered sandwiches!! Water glasses were not refilled but empty plates were promptly removed. Bill was delivered quickly but retrieved and returned for credit card signature only after s long wait. Clearly they were either understaffed or overwhelmed.
The atmosphere was beautiful outside. A lady next to us had her Ring doorbell notifications on and every couple of minutes the chime went off. It was distracting. Our waiter and bus service was great! We were seated 20 min after our reservation and the hostess station was frazzled. The male host was a little flippant and ride. The female host was very nice. The food was very good and the outside was picturesque.
Our visit to this restaurant was brought on by an e-mail from 'OpenTable' labeled "Top 100 Most Scenic Restaurants of 2019". This restaurant will bring you into Claude Monet’s world. Located just outside the “Grounds For Sculpture”, an outdoors sculpture garden, between Trenton and Princeton, NJ, is among the 100 most scenic restaurants in the US. The food is French modern of outstanding quality, with supplies sourced locally.
If you are seated outdoors you will enjoy a view of Monet’s waterlily garden and footbridge in addition to a great view of a large sculpture of a female head, which from time to time emits smoke emulates morning fog drifting on the pond, which is full of ducks.
At our visit we enjoyed the gazpacho and French onion soup as appetizers, and the Potato and leek Ravioli and Almond Trout as our entrees, finishing with a Crème Brulee. All dishes were of the highest quality and superb taste. The service was at time somewhat slow, which probably was due to unexpected many guests, but was very courteous and nice. The staff was surprised over the amount of reservations they had received, but when they were told about the e-mail from OpenTable they understood.
We highly recommend this restaurant and will return, and at the same time make a visit to “Grounds For Sculpture”.
Very disappointed in the small luncheon menu. Only 4 lunch options.
Food was a big disappointment. Best part was the Grounds for Sculpture before we sat to eat our meal
What a lovely dining experience at Rats! Our reservation was for later in the day but we wanted to eat earlier and they were happy to accommodate us. We started with the cheese board which was fabulous! A nice variety of cheeses and the apple strawberry jam was to die for! Our waitress was so nice and attentive. My friend had the steak and frites which he said was delicious! I enjoyed the burger and thin cut crispy French fries. Overall it was a wonderful experience.
On Sunday there is a brunch menu which had not been disclosed. Let me be succinct, the food was not up to the standard as advertised. The service was also subpar. The 3 of us were disappointed. Do not go here on Sunday!!!
Unfortunately our experience at Rats was a huge disappointment. After waiting so long to try such a revered restaurant we are quite shocked by what we found. The waiter acted like we were a nuisance and not only did we have to wait a while for him to come and introduce himself and give us our menus, but he forgot to even bring our drinks (we had to remind him we had placed our order and were waiting) and then we waited far too long for our main course to arrive. Unfortunately the food didn't make up for the poor service. We had made this reservation as a special birthday treat and the food was so overpriced for what it was. It was mediocre at best; and actually I'm amazed Rats isn't embarrassed by what it is serving for being such an expensive and apparently 'quality' restaurant. Obviously the surrounding is pretty and we really enjoyed the sculpture grounds, but were quite shocked by our dining experience. Please consider saving your money for somewhere that understands service and good food. This is the first OpenTable review I've written but felt it important to give a cautionary tale to others who have the same expectations we did. Enjoy the gardens and eat somewhere else!
Considering the place was packed on a very pleasant late summer day, the experience was very nice. Our food took a bit long to arrive but the server was on top of things and did a nice job keeping us informed. Our sea food salad and turkey croissant sandwich was quite good. But we did not come here to eat, it was the sculpture garden that was the draw....amazing place.
It was a beautiful restaurant with excellent service. Unfortunately the food was not. The pork schnitzel was tough, the soup was warm and had to be sent back . The trout was served skin side up which was unusual, it was suppose to be served with potatoes. Maybe one tiny one under the fish
Rats is a very unique establishment, the restaurant is located in the private grounds of a sculpture garden which has a feeling of stepping back in time into 18th century France.
The food and service is good and the general ambiance is pleasant.
Ordered pre-fix meal during restaurant week. Ran out of a few items offered and had to substitute. Had to take desert to-go and skipped the last glass of wine for both of us. To-go desert was very tiny and nothing special (put in a plastic cup with a lid). Waiter forgot to pack our leftovers, which was easily half of a $35 entree. Expected more for $160 dinner for 2.
Overall experience was great! Apps, sides and dessert were all very good, however my short rib entree was extremely dry and I could not eat it. Did get a few drinks comped. Overall a very nice place and would go back to try a different entree and enjoy the ambiance.
Never disappointed when we have dinner at Rat's. Excellent food and a very relaxing ambiance. We took advantage of the three course restaurant week menu. There was a nice variety to please the palates of all of the members of our dining party. Two of us had the wine flight accompaniment. Generous pour and well matched to each course.
We were seated immediately upon arriving as we had reservations and were given a choice of sitting inside or out which was much appreciated. We dined al fresco and were able to gaze at the beautiful scenery throughout our meal. It was my daughter's birthday and I had arranged to have a candle put in her dessert which was seamlessly presented at the end of the meal. The prices are high but the service and the food was excellent. It's the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion, especially on a warm summer night.
Very great service and ambiance. Loved the cozy table upstairs with the lovely couch
