I had the tasting menu which was mediocre, except for the duck breast. Others' entrees were good. Had to ask four times for popovers, which finally arrived-cold.
Was not the best dining experience I have had at Rats. Our server did her best, but the restaurant needs more servers. Our service was very slow-and it was not the fault of our server. Also, we were told we would have two servers, but second one never appeared. Even with our members discount, was not worth the cost.
This place is fantastic! Amazing food and ambience.
We enjoyed an evening of great conversation in a romantic setting. The food was wonderfully prepared. Service was good and the wine selection wonderful. We have been here many times and plan to return for future events, happy hours, and lunch with friends.
Service, appetizers and entrees, ambiance were fantastic. Desserts left alot to be desired
We loved Ken! He brought us a special treat for our anniversary!
Was disappointed on our 24th anniversary. Made reservation 3 days prior and specified it was our 24th Anniversary. They had limited LUNCH menu for our anniversary dinner and they should have told me that someone-where on their home site when I made my reservation.
Was seated next to a loud table 12. The other sever must of hit my seat 5 times. Our server was great but there were no specials and a very limited menu. Nice place, but not a real good for an Anniversary dinner on a Sunday.
When I called to make the reservation I asked about touring the grounds. I was never told there was a cost even though we had a dinner reservation. I also was never told that touring the grounds took hours.
The dinner food quality was poor. The trout was soggy and the sauce overpowered thecish and was too sweet. The chicken was rubbery and too think to me truly tasty like a Milanese. The side of vegetable (bok choy) was sparse and watery.
We were extremely disappointed in the food quality and presentation. The service was good and the table was nice (except for the screaming toddlers running around our table).
This was my husband’s birthday with all our children there. It was good to be in such a beautiful space, however the food quality did not match up. All of us felt the same.
Been there before. I nice place to go. We went on Sunday, we were going to have an early dinner at 3:00 but they only serve lunch. Portions are small but we just purchased nice sides. Can be paleo friendly as that is how my wife and I eat. Not amazing but good.
Food was excellent. We waited a while to get our order taken.
Rats never fails to inspire. This is my third visit - a corporate event, a happy hour, and now a birthday lunch with friends before visiting Grounds For Sculpture. The food is creative and fun, the setting is gorgeous, the ambiance inspiring. Though portions are small, making it on the expensive side, it's a wonderful treat and highly recommended.
Delicious meal, fabulous service. Sat in the bar area, so it was noisy, but still enjoyable.
Treated my adult daughter to an amazing lunch,, it was her first visit..
Not worth a second visit based on the service and food.
The design and ambience of this restaurant is amazing.
Been at Rats 5 times now. Though the overall experience is a good one with the garden and surrounding beauty, the food has been disappointing. Te menu is limited, which encourages one to taste new things, but at no time was I blown away by the new things I tasted. Food on the brunch selection is very good and fresh. Food ordered from the table is not worth the price, neither for portions nor culinary delights.
Beautiful venue, great food and excellent service. After trying to get here for many years, we were finally able to and it didn't not disappoint. Everything was better than expected. The best thing is that you can be comfortable in any attire from casual to formal.
Everything was great. The service was very good. The ambiance was really nice. It was the first time we were there. It was raining, so we really couldn't enjoy the grounds, but we would go back again.
Fabulous evening! Ambiance is rustic elegant, food is superb, service is excellent. GO! But beware of the small parking lot, we had to park a distance away on the road.
We went to the annual Rats Halloween event. It was such fun to be eating in the dining room surrounded by Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette, a Russian Princess, Dracula, Cowboys and .....
We have been to Rats many times. Very nice place. That particular evening was fine. It was also the night of the Halloween party. It was to begin at 10 PM. People began arriving around 9. Even though it was fun to see them, the space was getting rather noisy where we were eating. I am not sure if it bothered me or not, but want the management to know. Great place, but be careful that the quality and personnel may get common and not so special when it get too busy. We will of course still go there, still love the environemnt. We are also members of Grounds and Sculpture and artists.
Lunch ran $100 and we did not have any alcoholic beverages, so it is not inexpensive, but the food was VERY good and well presented. The ambiance was wonderful. My major complaint is that we asked to be seated by the fireplace (and this request was accommodated) but the staff kept opening the door to the outdoor dining area and leaving the door open - and it was COLD out there! (We were going to sit outdoors, because the setting is gorgeous, but the heaters were not operating.) This is a problem that management really needs to address. I would have given this restaurant a 5 star rating (instead of 4) if this "open door" issue had not so dramatically affected the enjoyment of our meal.
Food was very dry. Portions very small but okay due to mediocre quality. Nice ambience. Might try it again but if poor would avoid in the future.
I had lunch yesterday before touring the Sculpture Gardens. The waiter was very helpful answering my questions. My friends had never been to Rats or Sculpture Gardens and we’re delighted with The ambience in your restaurant!
Best restaurant in NJ. The food is not only superb, but the ambiance of Grounds for Sculpture makes the experience amazing. Even the bar area is very unique. It gets my highest recommendation. .
We took two Friends from Europe for lunch. We were able to sit outside with the wonderful view of the lake and Monet’s bridge. We shared the delicious mezze plate and each enjoyed differing entrees. There is something for everyone! Our desserts were delectable although we would have preferred slightly less exotic ice cream. An excellent experience and a wonderful venue for entertaining out of town guests - Rats is our favourite restaurant in the area.
Food was very good, service and value fair. It was Sunday lunchtime and the restaurant seemed focused on several large groups. Host was confused where to seat us. Chair at table was broken.
Went for a celebratory retirement lunch & had such a great time! Service was awesome, so helpful and friendly and attentive. The food was delicious and the vibe made it feel like a special occasion.
Our waiter, Scott, was great. He knew the menu front and back. he gave great suggestions for Murder Mystery Diner. The food came out quick and hot. I requested a sandwich that wasn't on the menu and they did it for me anyway. No hassle. The coffee and tea was very good as well. We didn't have dessert because we were full, but if we had room, we would definitely have ordered dessert.
AMAZING!!!! Can’t wait to come again. Telling all my friends.
Decor and ambiance is absolutely enchanting. Food was excellent.
Fantastic food and such a pretty place. My dad was visiting from the UK, a big impressionist fan and absolutely loved it. As did I, my second time returning. Unfortunately the waiter took away from the experience - I'd suggest they enhance the service. He wasn't present, forgot some elements, wasn't polite and didn't seem to be familiar with menu items. Wonderful service would have been even better. That said its so worth the visit and perhaps you'll be lucky with someone else!
The food is always great but they knew we were celebrating our anniversary and sat us right next to a family dining with 4 toddlers on a Saturday night. Quite an expensive meal to share with children screaming. Also, we ordered a bottle of wine which was 91.00 and when we looked it up the next day it was only a 20.00 bottle. I think there is no excuse for a 70.00 mark up on a bottle of wine. Needless to say we won’t be back and we will just stick to our small BYOB’s
RATS is always a great dining experience, and despite not the best meals I always return when in the area as the ambiance is just some of the best. The food the other day was one of the best had there in several years. Ambiance is always amazing as is staff. Desserts are always weak with odd flavors and combinations which feels like they are trying to be too fancy, but they miss : (
WE HAD TO WAIT A BIT FOR OUR TABLE EVEN WITH A RESERVATION; THERE WAS A WEDDING THAT USED THE OUTSIDE DECK WE HAD A VERY NICE LUNCH.
I would not recommend this restaurant for two people. It was loud with lots of people lurking and the seating was too close. I felt like I was dining with 4 people I never met before. The creativity of the food was underwhelming for a restaurant in a creative setting. The chicken salad was bland and the chicken dish we had was very bland. I would recommend this place for appetizers and drinks or dessert only. Maybe dinner is more appealing but lunch on a Saturday when there are private events all around is not enjoyable. The mezze appetizer was very good, it was the best part of the meal.
What a wonderful experience! The restaurant has great ambiance. The service is professional. The menu has something to please everyone from great trout and mussels to salads and sandwiches. An added plus is that it is on the grounds for sculpture
Been to Rats multiple times for lunch, dinner and bridal showers. Food is always great. This visit however the server was not familiar with menu items for dairy restricted diet, plus we ordered soup which never arrived. We'll go back though.
This visit was a midday lunch after walking the grounds. Food was fresh and tasty even if simple -sausage and white bean soup (though I had no actual sausage in my bowl) and vegetable tart on a bed of greens. Could’ve used more than one piece of bread too, it’s good in the soup. It’s not like the dishes are inexpensive, for what you pay they should offer another piece of bread or drink refill. My dining partner enjoyed the steak and frites with a side of greens.
