I came there for a business dinner, the waiter was not friendly nor at times considerate of our needs. The steak I ordered medium came out rare and cold. I politely let the waiter know of the issue with my steak. He acted like it was an imposition to have to take my steak back and have it prepared as my request. When you go to a restaurant you hope that your food comes out correctly the first time. When it comes to steak, your really need it prepared correctly, because when you just throw it back on the heat and try to cook it to the correct request, it is NOT good!
As always, food was great as is the atmosphere. Service at the table was very good, but the kitchen was very slow. Took much too long to get our food. We nearly missed our post-dinner event. Ended up having to rush through food in order to make event’s beginning which was just across the street.
I had a reservation for 10 people, and we had an excellent round table in a corner. It was a very busy evening as it was the opening night of Hamilton in Indy. Knowing that we went early. Our server was delightful, friendly and helpful. The crab and lobster stuffed tilapia special I ordered was delicious, as well as the sides of sugar snap peas and mashed butternut squash (YUM!) Unfortunately, when our server brought orders for 2 of our party, the vegetarian pasta dish had no vegetables! Several of us have ordered this dish numerous times, and it's always been delicious. This time it was pasta, feta cheese, a little sauteed spinach and sauce. Our server went and got each customer some sauteed veggies to add to their dish, but that was the extent of it. None of the entrees at Rathskeller is exactly cheap, so this was disappointing. Since this restaurant is so close to the theater venue, we have been there numerous times over the past decade. Another suggestion I would make is you might want to change up the menu. It has been exactly the same for as long as I can remember. Maybe some healthier, smaller portions?
Great choice if you have Murat tickets. They’re very accommodating to theatre schedules.
Enjoyed some fabulous German food, with excellent service from Joe. People eating dinner solo are usually either rushed through their meal, or chatted to death by the Server. Joe was fabulous. Never felt rushed, and he spoke with me just the right amount. Thank you!
Prices too high for quality of food
My wife and I had a great time in the restaurant. She ordered the shrimp scampi with a salad and a well made cocktail. She was very pleased! I ordered the hot wurst appetizer plate with red cabbage and sauerkraut. It was excellent and definitely large enough to share. Enjoyed a good German beer with it. Our server Jennifer, a 20+ year employee, provided outstanding service with a great personal touch on a busy Saturday night.
This place never fails. Great food and drink. Somewhat pricey but it's worth the money. The mustard is simply amazing. Love eating here after shows at Murat.
We love your restaurant. The food is good. The portions are generous. The wait staff is friendly. Our waitress, Jennifer, was attentive and fun.
Our server, Jennifer was fantastic.
The food was amazing. The beer was giant. Can't wait to go again.
The food was delicious and our server was great!
The food was very good with a nice selection of beer and wine. Our server was knowledgeable, friendly and efficient.
The food was fabulous. The waiter was perfect. I love the holiday decorations. It was very festive. Always have to have a piece of Black Forest cake. It is delicious. I love the ambiance as well. It reminds me of Germany for sure.
The food and service were outstanding, as usual. We took out-of-town friends before we attended ISO's Yuletide Concert on Sunday afternoon.
Great experience and service just not a major fan of the German Cuisine.
Great place to go before a show at Old National Centre. Great food and love the history of the restaurant. If there anything I would change, it’s that the bathrooms need updating.
Great German food. My husband and I went for his birthday. One drink an entree (+2 sides ) and a slice of German chocolate cake right at $100 for two. And there is a delicious pretzel with very spicy mustard before the meal. A little high-end but It’s very good food. Portions are very large so you could actually split a meal and have plenty of food.
Will definitely go back!
We were initially seated in the hallway next to a wedding party. Very cold, dark and noisy. I asked the hostess if we could move to the main dining area and she very graciously reseated us. Our server was terrific and attentive. Food great and we’ll return.
The Rathskeller is one of our favorite restaurant in Indy. I took two College friends from Missouri. They were absolutely blown away with the food and ambience. They both started texting Kansas City friends about the Rathskeller and before they were finish they had a group of six that were going to "road trip" to Indy (500 miles) to go to the Rathskeller.
I absolutely love this place. I love the German culture. It had been my favorite restaurant for a long time. I will always recommend it.
Service and food were great! The Jaegarschnitzel was delicious!
If you want good authentic German food this is the place for you.
Server forgot our appetizer until he brought our entree; overall server was not good. Did not greet us timely, another server brought us our beverages and took beverage order.
I am a Cincinnatian and hadn’t been to the Rathskeller for two years and never before brought my wife or son. We went for dinner following a successful half-marathon run that deserved some celebrating, but the results were quite mixed. My wife’s “draught” German beer was served up luke-warm, our spaetzle was pumpkin- colored and served with a bland gravy (not consistent with my past experience); my lemon chicken was dry and served without any lemon or seasoning; and the strudel we ordered for dessert was the worst thing I have seen served at a restaurant in long time. It was a loose pile of what looked like home fries but were supposedly spiced apples, covered by an orange-tinted slough of dough that looked like the result of cooking something in plastic wrap. It was served to us without explanation and when we told our server it was inedible she explained the orange shade was added food coloring to “make it look nice” and she was sorry we disliked it. Nothing else was offered or suggested. My wife’s awesome and racked the meal up to new experiences, and we had a three-year old to placate, so I didn’t ask for a manager before leaving. Truly though, I was embarrassed to have made the suggestion and surprised and disappointed by how poor our meal at the Rathskeller went. The service was welcoming but what was served was a turn-off.
We arrived at 5 pm without a reservation. The main dining room had a lot of empty tables. We were told that the only availability was in the bar area which was quite packed. We went the the Opentable website and set a reservation for 5:15. We returned to the host station at 5:03 and were immediately seated in the dining area. The hostess wasn't overly excited about seating us in the nearly empty nicely appointed dining area. She wasn't my personal favorite as could be expected. We were kind and ignored her discomfort at seating us. The rest of the staff and food were exceptional. We really enjoyed the atmosphere, food quality, and attentive but not overbearing waiter. We will dine here again as we have in the past.
Always a pleasure to visit Rathskeller when we are visiting our son in Indianapolis. Good German food and beer and absolutely unbeatable historic architecture.
Our expectations were for great food, but all four of us were disappointed. The food was tasteless and mediocre at best.
Great evening. Attentive servers. Great knowledge of the menu, including all the beers. Food quickly served. Good quality
Great food and great atmosphere! Definitely would recommend
My first time and the food tasted just like when I was in Germany! Delicious! Service was great! It was quiet. I will be back!
The food was fantastic. The staff was fairly attentive. Our waitress seemed to have too many tables so if it weren't for the other staff maintaining drinks she would have struggled. The band in playing in the next room was a little too much. I don't mind live music, but this band was a little much for what we had hoped for that evening. Great food, decent staff and uncontrollable circuses.
Not the good German food I remember. Maybe just a bad evening.
I had not dined here in several years. The food was not nearly as good as I remember. Service was slow and not very attentive even though my 2 boys and I were the only patrons for the first 30 minutes we were there.
I was terribly disappointed as I wanted my boys to have a memorable experience. I could have spent less and had better food and service at an Applebees! I highly doubt I will ever return!
Inattentive server, unlike last time, when we had a very nice experience. Ate in the bar area, which was not at all busy. Server appeared to really dislike his job and was more interested in watching football.
Only because of the venue -- really cool old building
The service was excellent and the food outstanding!
Made a reservation for the dining room and had two last minute guests join our party – bringing our group to a total of six. We were informed there was no way to fit us in the completely empty dining room, so we had to sit in the dark bar. It would have taken two minutes to push a couple of tables together to accommodate our party, but instead what was supposed to be a nice dinner ended up with us being seated in a dark corner of the bar area. Water served in plastic solo cups, food came out cold – the prices are not reflective of the low quality. Our server was great and a good spirit, however, we won't be returning for anything but drinks and bar snacks in the future.
The luncheon steak was gristly, and the waiter mixed up my bar order.
