The food and service was outstanding. We love eating at the Rathskeller!
Great place for traditional German food in an ambiance similar to what you would find in Germany. The service is good, the quality of food very authentic. Highly recommended.
Food was excellent and service superb
Serve an abundance of food. Starts with a bread plate with a pretzel served with spicy mustard. Dinner comes with soup or salad. Great blue cheese dressing. Had the sauerbraten and comes with two sides. Good choice of beer.
Great service and great food. Beautiful atmosphere
Gorgeous historical building, delicious food prepared well. Watch out for the mustard with a distinct horseradish kick. Great waitstaff and enough food for another meal. Highly recommend.
Great food and atmosphere. Cool historical building. Fast and friendly awesome service.
My potato was cold, my meat was tough, and my bread pudding was quite small for the price.
First time there on Monday. Best German food I’ve had in sometime
Staff was unfriendly and stern, especially our female server Saturday evening who said she was training a new server. The trainer was abrupt with my guests and seemed impatient when she was asked questions about the food or beer. She intimidated my guests and rushed them, even though the restaurant wasn’t that busy. Similarly, when I called the restaurant Saturday evening to let them know we’d be about 5 minutes late for our reservation, the woman who answered the phone was brusque and not courteous. She didn’t even thank me for calling or say goodbye, she just hung up.
Uncle’s 74th birthday.
Hosted a work event with 9 people and had great food and great service. Jen was our waiter and she was entertaining and great with recommendations. Rathskeller is a great place to go with a large group.
We love coming to Rathskeller. The atmosphere is phenomenal, and the staff was more than accommodating for our group of 12. The food was delicious. Will definitely be returning!
Worst food I’ve ever had. Not sure how you can mess up pretzels and a tenderloin but it was terrible. When we told the waiter he said that since I ate some of the food (a bite of the fries and maybe half the sandwich) he wouldn’t take it off our check. The food tasted the way the place smells—OLD
We had a reservation for 8 people prior to a local comedy event. The restaurant was beautiful and we were promptly shown to our table. The food was good a bit overpriced in my option. The best part of the evening was our server Jennifer Noel. She was AMAZING! She was friendly and wasn’t frustrated by our silly and somewhat rowdy group. We’ll be back!
Great atmosphere and German food. Great Service. One is the best restaurants in Indy.
Anniversary. Looking for something we hadn’t tried. Great schnitzel.
Great German food in a fantastic vintage building with lots of cool decor and ambiance. Service was fantastic. Always seemed to know when to show up but didn't intrude either. Drinks were never empty. Food was delicious and cooked perfectly. Highly recommend this if in the area and looking for a great meal in a cool setting.
Very good service but the food was not authentic jagerschnitzel and entree just not that good.
We we seated alone in a room at the rear of the restaurant and as a result, it took our server awhile to “find,” us. Soon, a party of 8 was seated next to us and we felt as though we were imposing on their party.
My wife did not receive what she had ordered but our server (Chloe) quickly corrected the mistake and offered a free dessert for the inconvenience. She was very good-attentive without being intrusive.
Overall, a good experience. Could have been really good though.
Food quality has really gone down. Service and ambience is great.
Out of 5 meals, only one of them was acceptable. The pork chops were tough and the schnitzel was overcooked. This was kind of our last-ditch attempt at a restaurant we have always loved. The last three times we have gone there something has gone wrong from a long wait time after ordering to other examples of food problems.
Two issues with the service. When arrived no one at the front desk to verify my reservation. Had to walk to the bar to find anyone to seat us. Bartender then went to find a person to seat us. Not sure if the person waiting on us was really a waiter, if he was needed to improve upon his waiting skills. Food was excellent though. Go and enjoy the food but don't expect to much from the wait staff.
Tablecloth was dirty/soiled with food upon our arrival, no mention made to change. Both of our water glasses were also dirty on the outside, flatware felt soiled, had spots on all pieces. Food was solid, if not exceptional. The sauer braten was dry, was grateful for the gravy. All other parts of meal were what one should expect in a German restaurant. Note: No prices on the beers were evident, should probably have this included in menu. When ordering from the dinner menu, there is no mention made of any sides that come included with the selection of the main course. This, too, should likely be changed.
This is a new food area for us. Our server was amazing, provided clear accurate descriptions, offered a couple of samples, and made perfect selections after talking to us. She did all this while handling a full section.
Noise level a bit high yet kind of expected with the beer garden open. Overall experience was very pleasant.
I grew up in a Bavarian family. This restaurant offers a good selection of German food and beer that tastes great. After dinner we went in the beer garden for live music, which is an awesome venue. I highly recommend making a reservation as it was busy (and I can see why). I will definitely go again next time I am Indy!
We went here before watching the show at the Murat Theatre. It was really busy, but we had a reservation and went right in. There wasn't a lot of room and we had to kind of squeeze at our table. It took 5 minutes before our waiter finally came over to take our drink order. During that time other servers kept trying to bring us drinks that another table had ordered. We were concerned about time and ordered food that was already prepared. The food came out within 2 minutes and it tasted excellent. The bread was incredible. They also give you rolls and a soft pretzel. The salad had homemade dressing and reminded me of my childhood. Overall, I am quite happy with the experience. I just wish they would have given us a little more room to sit. On another note, the performance at the Murat was sub par, and this was the bright spot of our evening.
very good german food, reasonable for the price and the service was great.
Overall the experience was good but for the price i am not sure I would go back. I would recommend it just as an experience to try something different. The food tasted good but my pork was very overcooked which is unfortunate because the seasoning was really good.
The Rathskeller's ambience reminds you of old Europe, and the unique character outclasses any chain restaurant. If you have a fondness for German food, this is the place to come for ochsenschwanz suppe (oxtail soup), saurbraten, schnitzel, kassler ripchen, sauerkraut, German potato salad, and red cabbage, the Rathskeller delivers (although the schnitzel is best at dinner). There is also a wide selection of entrees to satisfy every palate. The salads are generous, and the home made blue cheese or hot bacon dressing can't be beat. There's seafood, pasta, beef, chicken, and pork options, as well as a variety of sandwiches. Naturally, the beer selection is superb. I'm not as familiar with their wine offerings, but assume its decent. As a landmark of the area's once vast German community and its prominence in Indianapolis' history (Kurt Vonnegut's grandfather was the building's architect), this is great place to bring out-of-town guests.
Food was good, waitress was excellent! Beer list great! Would definately go again soon!
I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone that might be looking for anything even CLOSE to German food. I would describe this as a bland attempt of jazzing up canned vegetables. Had to ask for draft beer twice. The first was a German one that was on it's last leg of freshness. The second was a Stella (who can mess that up?) that smelled and tasted like a sour mop. Quite disappointing and would never go back.
Food was good, love the atmosphere, service was extremely slow.
Always a favorite. We were seated promptly for lunch, our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and helpful. Food was good as always!
My husband and I enjoyed celebrating our anniversary at The Rathskeller. It's always a fun environment and the food is not run-of-the-mill burgers and fries. The service was prompt and the wine and beer recommendations were very good. We also didn't feel rushed to eat and leave. Thanks for a great night!
We were seated in the far left room and did NOT enjoy the ambiance in there at all. It was our first trip to your establishment and the service and food were good, but where we were seated was horrible. I had hoped with a reservation, we would’ve been seated in the nicer main dining room. Disappointing.
Excellent German cooking. I grew up in a German household and it felt like I was back home again.
This is a perfect location if attending anything at the Murat theatre. We chose to eat in the bar because not everyone wanted a sandwich and the menu in the beer garden is limited. The entire restaurant has great ambience but the food was a huge disappointment. The bratwurst was large and over cooked on a stale pretzel bun. In a check around the table the only thing anyone would order again was the side of succotash ( like a bean soup).
Great beer selection and awesome fun beer garden. Just eat before you go.
Great food. Jennifer is a lovely waitress
