I grew up on an Angus cattle farm so take my steak very seriously. My husband I shared the dry aged rib eye cap last night and I think it was the best steak I've ever eaten. We are big on sharing to try more things and save calories so I appreciated the kitchen splitting items without us asking and without charging. Nice! Excellent service.
Great steakhouse in the Madison area- one of our 'special occasion' places, for sure!
Best place to enjoy diner in Madison, our server Alex was amazing
It was our daughter’s 17th birthday so we celebrated with a great meal. The service was terrific and the food was outstanding. Truly one of the best steaks I have ever had.
A little to dark in the section I was located but was very romantic. I have been to RARE a number of times but it seems the quality of the food has drop a little. Still very good but not the difference maker as it once was when deciding to go to Wonder Bar or The Tornado Room.
I will return but will set my expectations.
Great Evening had by everyone in my group.
staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, food was amazing and our entire party had a wonderful night.
This is our second time here and decided to bring friends with to experience their first time there. The first, we were blown away with the food! Loved the au gratin potatoes! This time, those were not on the menu and the rather expensive steaks were just sub-par. :(
The food was average. The service was exceptional. It was over priced for the quality of food.
Food was the best we have had in the last couple years the steak was cooked just right and my wife had sea food which was very good
Outstanding food and service. We sat outside (shaded) and enjoyed the elate evening on the capitol square. They were out of the ingredients to make the cocktail on their menu I chose, but they were able to make an alternative. Cheese board and shrimp cocktail appetizers were great. Our steaks we cooked perfectly and were large (we couldn’t finish them). We got the loaded potato purée and broccoli as sides to share and they were both great. We were stuffed and weren’t able to try their desserts. Service was very quick and the manager stopped by near the end of the meal to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. Highly recommend Rare for a special occasion.
For the price, I’d rather go somewhere else. Our server was great, however, there were a few glitches. Some waitstaff didn’t know proper etiquette/table numbers, and part of the meal was forgotten about until we told our server. My drink also took about 20 minutes to get out to me since they didn’t have the proper ingredients to make what I had ordered. A lot of back and forth which was kind of annoying. Once it was all there, my mains (filet, hash brown and broccoli) were great. However, for the outrageous price of $13, my Caesar salad was essentially a noodles and co half size copy cat - go there instead and save $6. I may come back for a restaurant week menu but not for full price.
Absolutely delicious food. "rare plus" was between "medium rare" and "medium" for us.
Love the atmosphere, but the hashbrowns were burnt, and the carrots were slightly under cooked. Steaks were great.
Food was delicious. Excellent service. Waiter very knowledgeable about what I could eat since I’m unable to have gluten. Always appreciate that!
We dined outside which was really nice. Perfect weather and great spot across the street from the capital building. Our server was very polite and well intentioned, but somewhat clueless and had clearly received little in the way of training on the menu and none at all on the wine list.
Rest of our table enjoyed their meal, but my bone-in ribeye was terrible. Ordered medium-rare; the edges were well-done and middle medium at best. It was also a very small cut and definitely not worth the $75 price tag. I also had the Caesar salad which was just ok. Lacked any anchovy taste - I assume the dressing came from a bottle or mix.
Overall I’d recommend going elsewhere as there are plenty of options in the area.
A good meal but very pricey for the food provided.
Our food and service was outstanding, I have Been here on numerous occasions and I have NEVER been disappointed!!!!!
Just a lovely evening. We started at the bar, had a fun and funky cocktail. Delicious, although very sweet. We dined outside as the weather was fine. Our waitress was a delight, I'm sorry, I don't remember her name. She happily answered our questions about the menu, specials etc. and took our picture for us. The food was superb.
Absolutely fantastic food and Service. Cannot wait to go back again!! One of the BEST Steakhouses in Madison!!
We enjoyed the romantic ambiance at Rare Steakhouse. Our food & drinks were perfect! I would recommend this restaurant to my friends & family who want to experience a taste of the finer things in life.
Great food and atmosphere!
We were excited to eat at Rare, however the food was less than desirable. The three of us each ordered a steak and they were not cooked as ordere
I have been a few times before and it gets better each time.
Excellent every time. The classiest place in downtown Madison - on a par with "big city" restaurants of the same genre.
Our waitress, Genevieve, was absolutely wonderful. Made us feel so special and very well taken care of. Overall, made our anniversary extra special...thank you!
Everything was cooked to perfection. If you are looking for a nice romantic place with great food, this is the place!
Stopped here for restaurant week lunch. Food and service were both very good and with restaurant week prices, a good deal too.
Very small portions but the price was right. Screaming baby at the next table was unpleasant. Hostess needs training.
Genevieve is a national treasure.
My wife and I tried Rare for Madison's Restaurant Week. We both got the lobster bisque starter (because, well, lobster bisque) and it was a good start to the meal. A little too creamy for our preference, but still yummy. We tried the two steak options for entrees and they were absolutely delicious! A little over-zealous with the salt, but they tasted fantastic and cooked to medium-rare perfection. The sides we received with the steaks were kind of a mixed bag. Some were good, others were kinda bland and unappealing. However, the desserts returned to form and were also very good. Overall, we were pleased with our meal. Due to price, it's not a place we will go often, but it makes for a good special event steak dinner.
My steak, the special filet, was great. Tender and cooked just right with a coating of pepper. Unfortunately the noise level was very high this time (we’ve been here before when it was quiet). This was Madison restaurant week so with the special deal the place was packed and the customers were reveling. Not a bad thing but I did have to move to hear my wife talk. Food very good, service as expected at Rare was also attentive. The go withs, potato’s, corn and vegetable were forgettable. I was looking forward to the regular go withs especially the loaded potato. They were out of our first choice for desert but second choice was good also. On the whole it was a good experience.
Phenomenal experience. Food and service was outstanding!
To make a long story short, our meal was not good. We went for restaurant week (usually a busy time for all), so we expected to be “moved along”. But, this was really rushed. Our server insisted that we order as soon as possible because the kitchen was getting busy, and we would surely have time to enjoy our drinks. Needless to say, our first course came before our drinks. That part I could overlook, but what really made me unhappy was that after choosing to upgrade ($35 extra) to a bone-in ribeye, my steak was basically inedible. I am not terribly particular, and usually eat what is put on front of me, but this steak had so much connective tissue in it that it was impossible to chew. At any rate, I am VERY, disappointed with Rare, and could not recommend it to anyone at this time.
It's one of those "go to" restaurants when you are celebrating a life event. Pricey? Absolutely. But worth every penny.
We enjoyed lunch during restaurant week. We both had the wedge salad and Sitka Salmon. I had the crème brulee and my husband had the chocolate tart. All items were excellent! We had just returned from Alaska and the Salmon was done to perfection at Rare, better than in Alaska. The salmon had a crispy topping and a delicious sauce. We recommend!!
Our server, Ryan, was perfectly attentive. It was a workday lunch and the pace of service was perfect. We really enjoyed the lunch at Rare!
I love Rare Steakhouse and try to get there at least once a year.
My co-workers and I reserved a table at Rare for lunch during Restaurant Week. I had been to Rare before and my expectations were met. My friends loved it too.
Rare is a very special restaurant for special occasions and for me, a retaurant week favorite. Food is alwsys spot on and service is excellent. I had the "cannibal sandwich" which was the first time in over 25 years i have dared to eat uncooked beef, but my trust in the reputation of Rare paid off. It was excellent!
my wife and i had lunch at rare on wednesday during restaraunt week...our first visit. we were overwhelmed by: the excellent food; service; and reasonable price! we will definitely be back in the near future!
