Rare Chop House
Expensive but worth it! The food looks & tastes fabulous! Excellent service! Will definitely be going back!
First the good or server Olivia was very nice with good timing over all. Kept the flow at an even pace. She did miss the chance to up sale by not recommending a wine with our entree. When the came the plating was nice if unimaginative. I had to the salmon it was cooked perfectly paired with a great sauce the best part of the meal. The side was sweet potatoes hash cooked with bacon and sautéed onions. Ok the bacon was perfect the onions and sweet potato’s were under cooked having the consistency of raw carrots. Turning what could have been a phenomenal dish into just ok.
toni had the chicken florentine her comment was it was good but nothing to right home about.
The height of the night was watching a two or three year old running around screaming. At one one point I wondered. If she was going to get hit by the swinging door because she was running dragging her hand down the same wall as the door being well below the site line it was a disaster in the making. Fortunately the parents of the child bribed her into silence with ice cream. Then left.
Over all an interesting if not completely enjoyable evening.
Andrew was wonderful and the meal was great!
Loved our dining experience at Rare. We took our own bottle of wine, for a $10 corkage fee, even though their excellent wine selection is reasonably priced in our opinion. We arrived early for our reservation and they seated us. Wait staff was pleasant, knowledgeable, and friendly. Only reason the service didn’t receive 5 stars was that we did wait longer than usual between appetizer and salad courses - wasn’t terrible but was noticeable. Food was excellent - we had salmon and ribeye, and it was fantastic!
Always love our visits to Rare. Excellent service and meal.
Each time we have been to Rare has been a great experience. The staff is very friendly. We have never had to wait for our glasses to be refilled, and the selection and quality of food is excellent. It is a very nice atmosphere.
One of the best restaurants in town if you are looking to treat yourself to something other than the chains. Staff is highly trained and attentive without being intrusive. Menu specials can be interesting but regular menu is pretty good as well.
My children and I flew out from AZ to IL to celebrate my dad 69 yrs birthday. We read the review on Rare Chop House and it rated quite good so we decided to give it a tried. Our first impression about the restaurant was good but it sort of gone down hill when our food arrived. First, two of the steaks was cooked incorrect, second the waitress forgot to gave us our the deserts then over charge us for an extra desert. We had to wait for a while before we got our bill corrected.
This is our first time dining at Rare Chop House and I will not recommend Rare Chop House to any visitor or to my extended families that are living there.
On our way back to Chicago and staying in Mount Vernon for the night Rare Chop House looked interesting. What a treat, historic setting turned into comfortable restaurant, good food and excellent service. After a long drive with over two hours of delays, Rare Chop House was a great way to end the day.
Cocktails are pricey. Service was excellent and food was very good.
I have eaten at Rare Chop House once previously, with my daughter, and loved it. They had a house risotto that was exquisite. I was concerned that my boyfriend, a vegan, would not enjoy it, since I was told when I made the reservation the menu had changed. The chef made a prima Vera for him that was wonderful. We both enjoyed our dinner immensely.
Great food and service as always!
Great Salmon on Friday night. Mussels app was superb. Chocolate martini was a good one! Service was good too. I would return!
Our server, Joshua was fantastic, very attentive and knowledgable about the selection. The food was also very good, the chef took care in it and it shows.
Probably one of the nicest places to eat in Mount Vernon. The atmosphere is great and food delicious! I love the character of the old building.
What a delightful find. My husband and I enjoyed our dinner at Rare Chop House. Both of us were trying to decide between several of the entree options. He chose the crab cakes and thoroughly enjoyed them. I chose the fillet and was elated -- grilled to perfection, tender and tasty. The server was professional and friendly. We look forward to our next road trip and the opportunity to dine there again.
This place is by far the best dining experience in this area. Food is great service is great prices are great considering the quality of food you get. Probably the best steak i have ever had. I have been to Rare quite a bit and this place has never disappointed.
The pretzel appetizer was delicious, the steak medallions was tender and awesome, but, the 6.00 greek salad was not good at all, the dressing tasted like water, nothing to write home about, all in all with my tipping, it cost me $48.00..very very pricey for just lunch, and if I didnt order a salad or pretzel appetizerz, it was no where near enough to eat, the 2 very small thin medallions and about a medium size spoonful of mashed potatoes, so if a man had ordered that meal, he would walk away hungry for sure.
What a great find! Thanks, Open Table. We were in Mt. Vernon for business and checked OT. You are the best as was Rare Chop House. Would not have found it if it weren't for OT. When in Mt. Vernon, go to Rare Chop House! It's a given.
It was a wonderful experience. Wonderful food, service and environment.
This used to be an amazing restaurant, but sadly I have to echo some other recent negative reviewers (who I didn't want to believe). We did the $50 Rare Experience. My salmon was nothing special and my side of sweet potato hash was cold and oily. My husband said his steak was good. We were looking forward to dessert, but when time came the server informed us that cheesecake was the only included dessert option and if we wanted a different dessert (there were 2 other options) there was a $4 upcharge for each. When we visited more often, a couple of years ago, it was always a marvelous experience. Disappointed this time.
Just an outstanding restaurant! Service was amazing. Filled our waters multiple times. Waitress (i didn't get her name) was very polite and fun! Would go back again (if i was rich).
This is a very nice restuarant. The service was very great. Everyone was very kind. The food was absolutely amazing and worth the price. I would 100% recommend.
Everything was great! Service and food were excellent!
Very good dining experience. Very good service, food and atmosphere. The only negative is that they were out of the 10oz New York Strip and substituted 8oz Ribeyes without offering to adjust the price for the 4oz loss of meat (for two steaks). Otherwise everything was very good.
Great service and food was on Point! Highly recommended to anyone!
We've eaten at the Rare Chop House several times and always enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. The service is generally very good, and this last time (2/15/2019) was no exception. That night, the greeter who seated us was especially friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, this time, I left behind a pair of gloves that had belonged to my dad (my own fault), so they have a lot of sentimental value for me. We live about a half hour drive from the restaurant, and I realized I'd left the gloves on the table during the drive home. I called as soon as we got home and was told no one had seen them, 30 minutes or so after we'd left. I also sent a message on Facebook messenger (because the contact form on the website wasn't working) and was told the same thing. I offered to buy a similar pair of gloves for anyone who'd found them to get those back and said how important this particular pair was to me, and got no reply that time. I know it's my fault for leaving them behind, but someone found & kept them and that makes me uneasy. I didn't think it was the kind of place where you have to carefully guard your things to make sure they don't get stolen. Again, my own fault, but still disappointing.
Outstanding food good service helpful waiters good wine choices
Very nice place...wasn’t expecting it due to this being a small town...food was superb, very quiet, service was excellent
Great service and really good food. It is a higher price than most other places in town but you get your money's worth with quality service, food, and facility.
When we first moved to Mt. Vernon the quality of Rare's food was as good as some of the better restaurants in cities! Over the last 2 years the quality has slowly declined. Steaks seem to be getting thinner and more fatty, sides are skimpy, etc. Real shame. I know in a small town it is tough to get people to pay for quality, but quality is what keeps people coming back. Maybe they could have a more value conscious selection while also keeping the higher end meals available for a price. Not sure, know they have to stay in business (and I want them too!) The food is still good, just not as good as it used to be.
The quality has declined. Steak was tough, overcooked, and not high quality. They no longer have bread with the meal. The coffee was cold. I have had a better steak at much cheaper restaurants.
It used to be a nice restaurant, I will not be back.
Rare is one of my favorite dining establishments. Their food is always well prepared, the service is outstanding. I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Excellent food, superb service, very impressive. Loved the atmosphere.
Amazing food, wonderful service, as always. Great atmosphere. Love the extensive wine selection. Rare is a Gem!
This is our second time to come here as we live in Tennessee. We absolutely love this place! We we’re hoping they would have entertainment like the first time we were there. Btw his name was Alexander Ruwe. We were so impressed with him we took his name and number so he could sing at our party. Anyway... We loved the food both times and the service. We even tried mussels for our appetizer and they were delicious! My wife and I will definitely be back when we are in town.
Excellent! My wifeand I had a wonderful prepared steak. Excellent wine was suggested and enjoyed. Will return again.
Perfect New Years meal, the selection and food were amazing.
This a very nice place for special occasions. The food is great and atmosphere is cozy. Well worth the 1 hour drive!!
