Rapture Ratings and Reviews
These people should win an award for food photography. Pictures on Open Table looked great, and the menu sounded interesting. We arrived and were greeted by a rather dismissive hostess to start with. We were seated at a table where the AC unit was dripping water on us throughout the meal. I asked if my crab scramble could be made with egg whites, and I was told that the kitchen was far too busy for that. I make egg whites for breakfast every morning, it takes all of 30 seconds to separate 3 eggs...so basically they just didn't feel like doing it. The food came out bland and unappealing. There was no discernible amount of crab in my crab scramble, and my boyfriends biscuits and gravy were dry and had little flavor. Overall just not a place worth visiting in a town with so much great food. Big disappointment.
Rapture was just ok. The service was good but the food was mediocre. I liked that they had a bunch of seasonal options and that their menu was unique, but in my opinion, it lacked flavor. I would be willing to try it again but it wouldn't be at the top of my list to tell friends about.
While this restaurant had a contemporary atmosphere, it's overall vibe was sterile and lacking in warmth. The food was so-so, and it did not help that a family member upon exiting the restroom experienced the waitresses joking about our party. So, we won't be back.
Good food, reasonable proportions. No sign it is really farm to table. Waitress was very good. They handled the sudden drop in people coming with more grace than most places would. Hard cider was really good. Wish they had more local beers on the menu. Prices were really reasonable. Overall, very glad we went. Would go again with friends but it wouldn't be my first choice for romantic conversation with a significant other.
First visit to Rapture. Most people were dining outside but we chose an inside table. Staff were not aware of our reservation when we arrived. Waited a while to be seated because most staff were too busy taking things outside to other customers. Once seated, took several minutes to get someone to take our drink orders. Waited a good while to get our waters & were finally able to order. Was not surprised that it took a long time to get our food. Chicken fingers were over-done & dry due to the little amount of flattened meat inside the breading. Tater tots were in a container full of grease at the bottom. Very small portion of potatoes with an equally small omelet. Portobello burger was literally an un-seasoned, un-marinated chewy mushroom on a pretzel bun with plain mayo and a un-ripened tomato slice that was almost white. Older, darker building with musty smell. Hoped for a better experience coming from Richmond to try this place, but was very disappointed.
Were seated in a booth patched with black duct tape. The service was good, but the food was only ok: good beer special, good salad, but pulled pork egg rolls dominated by peanut sauce, steak over cooked, mashed potatoes cold. With so many other good restaurants in Charlottesville, likely our first and last visit.
We went for lunch on Boxing Day so can;t really comment about too much as pretty sure its different in the evenings. We did really enjoy the food and they had a good beer selection. As we told the manager, the only problem was that all their choices just sounded great so it was hard to choose.
Best Hamburger ever and I love their sweet potato tots! I went to this restaurant because of the great location and the southern food menu. But when I got there, just felt like having a hamburger. What a great surprise. One of the best I have had in a long time. Very juicy and rich, and satisfying. Also my first time to have sweet potato TOTS. Wonderful bullets of goodness and adds that southern touch to an amazing burger. Service was good , even though very busy. The wines by the glass also excellent and interesting. Had a Washington Pino Noir, that was perfect with the burger. Chicago has some great burger places and I would put this burger up against many of them!
Outside dining at Rapture; it is right on the walking Mall, which with the weather nice (for August) was a must. Well, then again, there are the street musicians that might not be the background you wanted to have for your sweetee..... Waiter was fine. Main dishes seemed a bit on the dry side and the sizes of the meals seemed to be on the "smaller portion meals" now required to keep America slimmer.
The marquee and the menu communicate something completely different than what this restaurant is. Make no mistake: it's a restaurant/pool hall. And there is nothing wrong with that. But it is not an upscale, classy restaurant, so don't be fooled, like we were, by the book's cover.
the menu was disappointing, I would have expected more for a weekend when 1000s descend on Charlottesville for a special occasion like graduation weekend. The only thing they had were brunch items. Great if I wanted breakfast at 2 pm.
I went to Rapture with a friend for the Restaurant week deal ($28 for 3 courses), and it was a great choice!! We both ordered different things for all three courses so we could try a bit of everything. In short--the food was notably fresh and the flavors complex. I ordered the seared trout for my main course, and it came on top of a delectable cream sauce with cubed sweet potatoes and some of the best, most tender mushrooms I think I've ever eaten. Tasted like an upscale comfort food with its warm, aromatic flavors and totally hit the spot!
Also, in addition to the R-week deal our dinner fell during the daily happy hour which was an amazing deal--beers on tap half off and their house red and white at only $4 a glass. Thanks Shandy for the amazing service!
This was our first time @ Rapture & we will be back. Interesting menu with a good array of choices. Portion size is good and not overwhelming. We shared our kale/chicken dumpling and shrimp/grits dishes and enjoyed both. Service was attentive but not overbearing and our waiter/bartender was quite convivial & helpful. We give it a strong recommendation.
I ordered the special which was Grouper with brussel sprouts and turnips with hollandaise sauce. The fish was about the size of an appetizer, the brussel sprouts were minced underneath it, there were literally 4 slivers of turnips and a big spoonful of sauce. Now, it was really good but I'm not kidding when I say I could have eaten the whole thing in 4 bites. I didn't though, because I didn't want to be finished while my date was still putting salt and pepper onto his meal! This was a $25 entrée and I was ready for a real entrée after finishing this "meal".
We had a reason to be in Charlottesville and this place added to it.
Although we were not thrilled with the mushroom pate, it was interesting and there were other offerings. The Caesar was fresh and dressed as reqested. The duck confit with greens was very good as was the pan seared halibut. We finished with a corn meal cake that was surprisingly good. Our server was knowledgeable about the area which added to the experience. Not inexpensive but worthwhile.
