"The huge snake logo on the outside of an otherwise nondescript building -- created by Bob "Daddy-O" Wade, best known for the oversize boots that front San Antonio's North Star Mall -- is your first hint that this place might be a bit, well, different. Inside, cowboy kitsch, 1950s diner decor, and Mexican folk art mingle, as do workers from the nearby county offices, local movers and shakers, and anyone else looking for terrific food that, like the decor, defies easy categorization.
Call it South Texas gourmet. You can really taste the chipotle chilies in the tartar sauce that comes with some of the best crispy oysters this side of the Mason-Dixon Line, and the Gulf fish tacos are gussied up with chili lime aioli and Tabasco jalapeño onions. You get the idea -- lots of spicy dishes."
What Insiders Are Saying
Ranch 616 is a Tex-Mex spot downtown where you go for a group dinner that might get a little rowdy.
Love Ranch 616 - there's no place like it! Service was great!
Great ambience, love that they take reservations, yummy cocktails, food ok.
Of all my Austin favorites, Ranch 616 is one of the best - with delicious food, lively atmosphere, fantastic drinks (helloooo ranch water), and great service. I’m thankful to live and work close enough to visit a few times a month. Thank you for being consistently awesome. #fanforlife
We love this place! You just have to experience it for yourself!
I’m a fan of this place. The food and service was a bit off on this trip. I was told by the hostess that they had opened early for Cinco de Mayo and been overwhelmed, they waiter said the same thing several times when he forgot things or was slow getting things. The food was good but below past experiences. Only one from our group ordered from the specials of the day. There were no prices listed on the specials and I should have asked, but I won’t make that mistake again.
Fabulous southwestern comfort food. Great drinks. Outside is fantastic but inside was pretty loud and while our server was super friendly, he kept forgetting our drink orders and would be gone for 15 minutes at a time!
Thank a Billy D!
Amazing food and tequila- holy cow! Had the Jalapeño maize chicken and it was unbelievably good. They made me a special mezcal margarita not on the menu- awesome!!!
Can’t go wrong here! Sitting outside - phenomenal atmosphere.
Near our hotel with an interesting decor and choice of indoor or outdoor seating. We ate here several times during our trip and we had great food each time.
The restaurant was packed with mainly a younger crowd so that made the noise level high but it was a party atmosphere. The food was good and our server was great.
Excellent food, very attentive staff, and a good crowd. I enjoyed the experience as I had to change my reservation due to work commitments. Management was very accommodating, and the attitude was fantastic. Loved the food.
Calamari was just ok. Wedge salad was good.
Thank you for a fun evening! We had a great family evening over the Easter weekend.
This was our second visit. First was just apps and drinks. This visit was the full meal and it was awesome. Will be going back. The drinks and food are fantastic.
Great food and even better service and ambiance! Will definitely be returning!
Reservation set for 9:30 but we weren’t sat at a table until after 10:00pm. The server was visibly over working that night and seemed annoyed. Overall the server did the minimum but after the extremely long wait (and there were other parties experiencing the same issue) the manager didn’t stop by to apologize or offer us even a simple appetizer as an apology. The food was good as always, but all things considered I doubt I’ll be bringing friends and family there when they fly into town.
Great service and great food! We love returning to Ranch 616!
Arguably the most unique restaurant in Austin but comes with some of the absolute best food. If you’ve not been you are missing out.
Love the atmosphere at this quirky Austin staple, but the food doesn't live up to the ambience. Uninspired, heavy on the frying, and completely lacking in flavor. The service was friendly, but slow and disorganized. It feels like all inspiration has fled the kitchen, and the place is completely coasting on reputation. There's too much going on in the central Austin food scene to waste your time here.
Mix of young and old; energetic and loud! Food was tasty, good - price was a it on the high side. Still, it is a good place to see and be seen.
The food and service was great, but the hosts are very rude and unprofessional.
Extremely loud! Food was a disappointment -- sounded good when ordering but was virtually tasteless. This restaurant is way overrated! You have to be intoxicated to enjoy it. The waiter was excellent and did a good job!
Excellent service and such a fun place!
Great experience, always have an amazing time there
Wonderful food and drinks!!
I love this restaurant because it’s everything Austin.
The food is always good . Service was a little slower then in the past
The food and ambience was excellent. The service was just a tad lacking.
Manager asked us to leave while we were still eating as another party arrived. us leave and blamed OpenTable for stacking the reservations so close together.
I will be going back asap!!!
The food was creative and delicious! The service, excellent. Even down to a server and a bartender leaping over a wall to return my sunglasses and credit card to me! Very cool interior and awesome patio.
Good mix of kitsch and great food. The soundtrack of 60's and 70's hits helps create a nice backdrop to the high noise level of the restaurant.
Love this place - I make sure to come back every time I’m in Austin. Food is spectacular and some of the best craft margaritas I’ve ever had.
I chose this for a client dinner, but it is more of an everyday place. Friendly staff, and approachable menu. Good times.
Amazing food and great vibe. Fine Texas dining in an eclectic spot right off west 6th Street. An instant favorite.
Ranch 616 is a true Austin establishment. From the ambience to the decor, the place exudes old Austin. The food and service is always amazing. If you are new to Austin or just visiting, Ranch 616 is a must to round out your Austin experience.
Went there three times over two weeks while on vacation. Always had a very good meal and attentive service. Prices are fair and the wine list is extensive and offers a wide range of options and prices. If we go back to Austin, this is definitely on our list of places to visit again.
We went on a Friday night with reservations (make sure to make reservations!) When we arrived we told them we had reservations and they just said "I guess this table will work". That was one red flag. They sat us in this tiny table that was against the window and right behind a big table of 10-12 people. The wait staff even had trouble getting through. The service wasn't that great, I had to get up and get a fork from an empty table since we could not get the attention of our waitress. When the food came out, the main protein (fish in my case) was tiny compared to the heaping mountain of mashed potatoes. I wouldn't say it was worth the price. I would try this place again just to see if it got better since I've heard so many good things about it.
Loved Ranch616, the service was great. Our waiter was very attentive and the food came out quick but not too quick. It was a lovely time.
Fried oysters were cold and soggy. Waiter was not real nice. I have been there many times so I think this was just a one off experience.
