"The huge snake logo on the outside of an otherwise nondescript building -- created by Bob "Daddy-O" Wade, best known for the oversize boots that front San Antonio's North Star Mall -- is your first hint that this place might be a bit, well, different. Inside, cowboy kitsch, 1950s diner decor, and Mexican folk art mingle, as do workers from the nearby county offices, local movers and shakers, and anyone else looking for terrific food that, like the decor, defies easy categorization.
Call it South Texas gourmet. You can really taste the chipotle chilies in the tartar sauce that comes with some of the best crispy oysters this side of the Mason-Dixon Line, and the Gulf fish tacos are gussied up with chili lime aioli and Tabasco jalapeño onions. You get the idea -- lots of spicy dishes."
Dinner: Monday - Thursday: 5:00pm - 10:00pm, Friday & Saturday: 5:00pm - 11:00pm, Sunday: 4:00pm - 9:00pm
What Insiders Are Saying
Ranch 616 is a Tex-Mex spot downtown where you go for a group dinner that might get a little rowdy.
We have been here several times - great vibe - one of our favorite spots when we come to Austin.
Good tables a little too close and loud in the restaurant but food great! Drinks too strong...like it to taste like menu describes! But overall experience and food, excellent!
Restaurant is definitely entertaining from the decor, the patrons, the bartenders and the DJ after a while. Close quarters for dining but loud enough that you don't pick up the next table conversation but can be a bit loud in general. Menu is varied with good selection of meats and appetizers. The Fried crispy oysters as an appetizer was flavorful with good seasoning but modestly worth the effort. The Pork and the Beef would both be recommendations and both are substantial enough without much else, although the mashed potatoes with the Steak were excellent. Now the Ranch Water is the treat. Can be a bit strong but for Austin it's just right. Mix it with a side of Soda for comfort. Try the chilled tequila shot to get you started. Entertaining Restaurant. Get Reservations.
Underwhelmed by the food particularly at this price point.
For this having a “Steak” tag, this was not worth the price for steak. It was a very underwhelming quality of meat. Very disappointing if you’re interested in a real steakhouse. We didn’t mind the atmosphere, but if you’re interested in having a quiet conversation, this probably isn’t the best place for you
Pretty underwhelming for the price. Nothing very remarkable on the menu.
The food was delicious and the staff was courteous and fun
Not at all like I remembered this restaurant. I hadn't been in a while, and had liked it before, so decided we would take friends for dinner on a Saturday night. The food was good, but the noise level was unbearable. We had to shout at each other over the music to be heard. And they played the same music over and over (I had nothing against the songs they played, but it was the repetition). My ears were ringing for hours after I left the restaurant. All in all, not an enjoyable dining experience.
Although it was dinner for two the table was very small but tables for more people and booths looked great
The food was superb
I had double stuffed pork chops, onion rings, and spinach. My wife had the triple seafood, poblanomashed potatoes, and mixed vegetables. We made reservations and were seated immediately upon arrival.
Looking forward to it on our next Austin trip.
Owner/manager is a huge tool.
Best food and service in Austin. Keeping Austin weird with unique environment and food / drinks with a local twist. Everyone must try the Ranch Water.
The food and drinks were great! Just a tad bit more pricey than I had thought for $ (two dollar signs) but either way it’s a great spot in Austin to go to with friends, date night or coworkers for happy hour. Definitely recommend!
Ranch 616 is an excellent place for dinner. We love the decor and the vibe, the food is outstanding and the staff is excellent. Now that we have found it, we will visit each time we are in Austin.
We started with the Empanadas--wow. Exceeded our expectations. Great pork and sauce. Then one of us had the beef tenderloin with lobster and crabmeat, and the other had the rib eye over the enchiladas. Both were outstanding. Lastly we had the chocolate silk torte--perfecto!
Can't wait to return to Ranch 616.
Delicious and so fun atmosphere! Loved their cocktails and grilled frog legs, quail and fish tacos - all some the best we have had!
Great service, too!!!
Excellent food and friendly service. Sat at the bar and enjoyed every bite
We have not been to the Ranch for a bit. But the service was great. The food was awesome. It was great to go back and find that it's still a Gem!
I love this place !!! I was here for a girl's weekend. Atmosphere was fun and quirky just like Austin. Food was great. I loved the fried oyster appetizer and the camarones wrapped in bacon.
I have raved that the food turned out of the kitchen was phenomenal, the service was exceptional. Our group of six was celebrating my Birthday, and ordered appetizers that were delectable, fish/crab cake and fried oysters. I was disappointed that we were faced, literally by a large group of diners. Then two guests next to the aisle, had servers rear ends in their dining space. Too crowded, too noisy. Probably won’t go back on a weekend.
Great vibe in an eclectic tex-mex themed diner, but with a surprisingly tasty and varied menu. We've actually gone twice now in 3 days. It was that good. And the friendly servers and easy atmosphere makes it great for both neighborhood regulars and newcomers.
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Ranch 616. We started with the Don combo - 1/2 fried oysters and 1/2 fried calimari. Delicious and could have been a main meal for either of us - and without question a great value. I had the divorced quail - outstanding! My husband had the angus with crab - accompanied by amazing asparagus. We shared the peach fried pie (which, if you haven’t had before comes with 2 pies and Amy’s vanilla ice cream.). Ranch 616 continues to be our “go to” for special occasions (eg valentines, bdays, anniversary or any random day we feel like having a great meal.).
Ranch 616 is a unique restaurant, you would expect this place to be on the beach, but the owner got it right. The food is great, try the divorced Quail, an excellent choice. I would definitely bring friends if in the area again. The atmosphere is very energetic and as the night life comes alive so does Ranch 616.
Excellent experience! Billy, was a great server. Very friendly & knowledgeable. I had the special chicken fried steak with grilled quail. Best chicken fried steak I ever ate! Quail was tender & quite tasty. A my family also loved their meals. Highly recommend!
Ranch 616 is a great go-to for a very Texas/Austin experience with excellent food and drinks. Great service, really fun patio vibe and lively people watching. Our group tried a variety of dishes including the calamari/fried oyster appetizer, petite Chicken Fried Tenderloin and Divorced Quail. All were very large portions and tasty. We also had a couple of different margaritas - the spicy cucumber jalapeno and the silver coin. If you like spicy (and I mean spicy - this coming from a Texan who likes spicy), go for the cucumber jalapeno margarita. Otherwise the silver coin is a first rate, top shelf margarita. We thoroughly enjoyed...great recommendation by friends!
Great food and great service, so it was very disappointing when they played VERY loud music during our meal. It was loud both inside and outside on the patio. Probably won't go back.
The whole evening was wonderful! From the drinks, to dinner, to great customer service everything was very enjoyable. I highly recommend this spot.
We came to Ranch 616 for our Moms birthday and it was great! Highly recommend.
Service was fast. Food was good not great. The interior of the restaurant fit Austin’s ‘weirdo theme.
We had a great girls night! The food was great and the specialty cocktails did not disappoint!
Such a fun & funky place! The food was great & all the critters are dressed for success on the walls! The service was downright fast & everyone was ready to jump in & help! Don't you dare say no to the melt in your mouth biscuits & the fish tacos are everything!
Great! Fritto pie yum.
Such an Austin restaurant! Casual, great food, fun ambiance!
Unique interior with great food, staff and vibe. I ordered the divorced quail which is one fried and one grilled. It came pretty quickly and was amazing. When reading the description I wasent sure if the sides would be good but they blended fantastically together. Tried the plates my friends got as well and they were both great. I will be back
Server was friendly and knowledgeable of the entire menu. Was attentive, however, not overbearing. Had the TX mixed grill special of the day. It was awesome. Customer service goes above and beyond. I left my hat and sunglasses and they tracked me down and told me I left them. Definitely recommend 616.
great food with a special twist
I will return
worth the trip downtown
We are attending a wedding and drove into Austin this afternoon. This was our 1st time at Ranch 616 and my wife and I really enjoyed it; laid back and rustic atmosphere. Good variety of food and drinks. Our orders came out quickly and the food was good and hot. The service was super too. We’ll be back.
Waitress wasn’t as friendly as we expected and we waited for 15 minutes after being seated before our waitress even came to take our drink orders. The frog legs were undercooked and overall was disappointed with the experience.
Always at great meal at Ranch 616, it is an Austin gem. Fabulous margaritas!
Awesome food, South Texas Grill was fantastic! Frog leg appetizers yum! All good here!
Found this restaurant within walking distance of your hotel downtown. Made reservations and then walked there and we were seated promptly. Items on the menu were very unique. My girlfriend and I both enjoyed our drinks and food. This place must be popular with the locals. Reservations must be needed on a busy night. It filled up quick as we sat and ate.
