About Ranch 616
South Texas Ice House, "Texas Cuisine" Products from the Texas Gulf to the Texas Hill Country.
"The huge snake logo on the outside of an otherwise nondescript building -- created by Bob "Daddy-O" Wade, best known for the oversize boots that front San Antonio's North Star Mall -- is your first hint that this place might be a bit, well, different. Inside, cowboy kitsch, 1950s diner decor, and Mexican folk art mingle, as do workers from the nearby county offices, local movers and shakers, and anyone else looking for terrific food that, like the decor, defies easy categorization.
Call it South Texas gourmet. You can really taste the chipotle chilies in the tartar sauce that comes with some of the best crispy oysters this side of the Mason-Dixon Line, and the Gulf fish tacos are gussied up with chili lime aioli and Tabasco jalapeño onions. You get the idea -- lots of spicy dishes."

Ranch 616 Ratings and Reviews
Good food, but for the price, I expect cleaner facilities. The bathrooms (confirmed with my husband that the men's is also this way) are dirty. Really dirty... The hand dryers have mold and scum growing on them. Pretty gross for any restaurant, but unacceptable for one where we're paying $150 for dinner.
Eight of us celebrated our daughters birthday, the reservation and table prep were handled perfectly for such a popular place. As always, the food is the star here. We enjoyed great crab cakes and shrimp appetizers, perfectly cooked rib-eye steaks and lamb chops featured for our entrees. We brought a birthday cake from Sweetish Hill for dessert, the waiter could not have been more accomodating. The cocktail menu and wine list are excellent, its a terrific place for an adult birthday. I would say it isn't particularly kid friendly nor vegetarian focused, but a great example of what Texas cuisine has to offer.
Was super disappointed with my experience. Made a reservation, waited over 30 min to be seated. During that 30 min, everyone tried getting a drink and not one of us were successful. Hosts were so incredibly rude (with the exception of the one female hostess). Server was put out and provided the worst service. Because we were a very large party, gratuity was automatically included, so I suppose he thought he could get away with the most horrendous service ever received. Only highlight was that the food was very good, but with the sort of service we received, no food is good enough to be treated that way again.
First we did arrive 10 minutes late because of traffic. Then upon arrival we were told we had to be out of our seats in 1 hour because they are busy. NOT IMPRESSED WITH THAT!
Appetizers were good and service was good.
Steak was ordered medium rare and came out rare. It was not a good cut and had a lot of tendon tissue in it but that can be hard to see in a kitchen. Lamb chops were ok.
Was surprised at the quality and greeting.
Does not make me want to recommend or return.
Ranch 616 was awesome. I've been a few times and the food has always been good. Calamari and chili lime grilled prawns were SO good as appetizers. I've had the Jalapeno Maize Chicken and the Shrimp Tacos and both I'd definitely get again. Only criticisms is the service is kind of lacking and the cocktails are alright. Of the handful of time I've been, it always take 10-15 minutes to be greeted and get a water/drinks ordered. They have a large selection of drinks, but I haven't found anything I'd order again. Overall, the food is awesome and it's a great location.
Ranch 616 never disappoints! I'm from out of state, and always make it a point to come here when I visit Austin. The food is inventive, delicious, and ample in portions. The staff is accommodating and even seated us before the restaurant opened when we arrived early in the rain! I highly recommend Ranch 616.
Love the ambience at Ranch 616--lots of interesting objects and pictures on the wall. The wait staff was incredible. Very accommodating, explained questions we had regarding the menu, drink menu, pictures, etc. and never made us feel as though we weremonopolizing his time.
We had the onion rings for appetizer and they were most unusual and absolutely scrumptious. The food was presented beautifully and tasted so good. One in our party had the chicken, one had the talapia and i had the vegetable tower--highly recommend any of the dishes. Will definitely recommend to friends and I will return!
Our server was spot on, I liked her recommendations and she was attentive but not intrusive. Food was good and plentiful, I had the mixed seafood dish and my son had lamb chops. The vibe of this place is funky and fun. Good place to bring guests for a eclectic evening out.
Sub par at best... I thought of Cracker Barrel and when I saw and tasted the food.
I read reviews that said a must visit when in Austin; perhaps these reviews were meant for another restaurant !!! It's one of the last places I'd recommend. Poor food quality, poor ambiance (louder than average, overall quality of furniture and structure), bad cocktails, and two cockroaches... won't go back again.
We ordered 3 different cocktails, all were some of the worst we've had; no good taste and not much alcohol in them. Chicken Fried Beef Shoulder and Divorced Trout were both of poor quality and taste and all the sides that come with the dish were basically piled together on the plate (again, I thought of Cracker Barrel and when I saw and tasted the food). The lemon meringue was the worst we've had (too much of the meringue and hardly any of the lemon custard and the cookie it came on was very dry)... The appetizers were the only thing that was really good (crispy oysters and Prince Edward Mussels).
Took way too long to eat, there were only two servers and they had to take care of the entire restaurant! The food was pretty good but the drinks were overpriced and the place was far too crowded and noisy to be enjoyable. Pictures online made it look significantly better, also. Instead of looking like an eclectic ranch, it looked like the inside of a mobile home. I would not recommend it.
Daddio, Frito pie, enchiladas, salmon salad, frog legs, steak ... what else can you say. Eclectic menu in funky downtown location. Great food with outdoor seating. Great value and wonderful place for business lunches. Only complaint is limited parking. Recommend going early or making reservations.
The host was great. The restaurant was ridiculously loud...actually made conversation at our booth nearly impossible. It wasn't the music outside as no one was performing. My food (divorce trout) was cold and nearly tasteless. I was pretty disappointed. Fortunately, our Berah Zin was delicious as was our dessert. Also, our server was efficient and expeditious.
