"The huge snake logo on the outside of an otherwise nondescript building -- created by Bob "Daddy-O" Wade, best known for the oversize boots that front San Antonio's North Star Mall -- is your first hint that this place might be a bit, well, different. Inside, cowboy kitsch, 1950s diner decor, and Mexican folk art mingle, as do workers from the nearby county offices, local movers and shakers, and anyone else looking for terrific food that, like the decor, defies easy categorization.
Call it South Texas gourmet. You can really taste the chipotle chilies in the tartar sauce that comes with some of the best crispy oysters this side of the Mason-Dixon Line, and the Gulf fish tacos are gussied up with chili lime aioli and Tabasco jalapeño onions. You get the idea -- lots of spicy dishes."
Awaiting Open Table credit for the last two lunch meetings! Good service.
Very loud DJ. A few decibels lower would have been awesome. Atmosphere is great and fun vibe.
We went for our engagement celebration and everything was awesome. The calamari/fried oyster combo was outstanding. We also had the divorced quail and snapper.
Would you recommend... is a tough question. Definitely Yes for Lunch (went there for lunch earlier this year). Probably No for Dinner (experience this time), unless they absolutely love everything spicy. ...I want to say first that the management could not have been nicer/better to work with on the reservations I made. However most of us were surprised and disappointed that the DINNER menu items were nearly all spicy. I say surprised, because the only menu Ranch 616 makes available online - had the names of the items, not the descriptions, and the Names did not indicate spicy. Ahead of time, I had looked online and decided on "Caesar Salad" and "Steamed Mussels". Once I saw the in-person menu (with descriptions) it turned out Caesar Salad had a southwest-spicy dressing and the Steamed Mussels were in a Chorizo broth. The waiter indicated I could have the dressing on the side, which I asked for and got, and the Mussels could be made the "old way", non-spicy; IF I was served the "old way" version, it was still quite spicy. In this review I am describing two items, but most seemingly ordinary online menu items were indeed actually served spicy. Anyway, from looking at the online DINNER menu, I would never have guessed Ranch 616 was a Southwestern-Style-Menu restaurant. I suggested to the manager that they update their online menu to include descriptions. IF I knew someone who loved this style of cooking, I would recommend. OR if a friend was going only FOR LUNCH, I WOULD RECOMMEND as there are more non-spicy items available for lunch and the lunch value is very good (I've been there for lunch).
Always a blast!
Awesome! Love this spot!!
Ranch 616 continues to be an outstanding meal and experience in Austin.
We always enjoy Ranch 616 and this past visit was no exception.
My husband and I celebrated his birthday and had a fabulous time. We have been dining here for years. The staff, service, and food are always fabulous!
As usual the food at Ranch 616 was good and the portions were large. Not a cheap place to eat but you’d hardly expect it to be when the food starts out with big pieces of quality stuff. Service was good and the staff fits right in with the clientele. Ambience is kind of Central Texas funky. Music selection was particularly good the evening we were there and just about perfect for our dinner. Recommended.
We were celebrating a new job for myself and an end of an old one.
Excellent service, food and atmosphere. Could use a better selection of local craft beers. Otherwise, excellent all around.
Never disappoints. Best food, drink and atmosphere in Austin in my opinion.
Birthday dinner, patio seating, perfect weather, apps, dinner and drinks, and excellent service..........until the end. We had reservations for 7:30pm and got seated 5-7 minutes after arriving, which is fine and normal. At the end of the dinner the waiter said that he was sorry but he had another table to seat there and asked us to leave. I have never been kicked out any restaurant, ever. How was poor planning on the Manager’s part now my problem?! I could tell the waiter felt terrible and was only doing what he was told. We had been there a little under two hours. Other tables around us had been there longer. We were planning on doing dessert before the waiter said he needed us to leave. This really ruined the evening especially since it was a bday celebration. I could have made a big deal but at this point I was pretty hot and wanted to leave. I dine out quite often in Downtown Austin being in sales. I can assure you I will never bring clients or friends there again.
Best place in Austin.
Very cool spot. Staff was very friendly and server was fantastic. Everyone in our group enjoyed their meal. Would definitely go back.
Food is amazing! I love Ranch 616, it is always hopping and the food is comforting without leaving you feeling grossly full.
It was a fun place to be the the food and drinks were excellent!
It is a great place to have fun drinks and great food! The vibes are awesome and perfect for a Friday or Saturday night! The ranch water and divorced quail is a must have and if you are feeling you for it, try a fire in the hole shot!
Always bring clients here and always a hit!
Very cool restaurant. Great food and service. Loved the steak!
As appetizer we'd tuna salad ....absolute delicious - as entree we choose the mixed fish plate and this was asome. Either the restaurant was plenty booked - the service quick and very kindly...Oh, not to forget the excellent creme brulee -
Food was great! Fun atmosphere for a girls bachelorette dinner!! Fire in the hole shots definitely a must! Cute cute place!
The waiter was friendly and attentive, but we felt rushed. The menu said 20% gratuity added to parties of 6 or more (we were 6). Got the bill with 25% added!!! Waiter said he could adjust it, but that 25% is their policy even though 20% was on the menu. I would probably just go back for drinks on the patio.
Outstanding as usual! Can’t make a trip to Austin without a little “Ranch Water”!!
Mandatory 20% tipping on a family of 5 is unreasonable, regardless if we would have tipped that much anyway. Too many good restaurants in Austin that don't have that offensive custom. And we were VERY surprised that with 2 birthdays in the family that the dessert was not complimentary, even if the complimentary dessert was a simple scoop of ice cream. We suggest that you take your celebratory dinners elsewhere.
Great food. Reasonable prices. Cool location adjacent to interesting old Austin neighborhood and homes. We walked from the resturant to event at the ACL Moody Theater. We will come back.
Bill was amazing! Ranch 616 is and will always be an Austin faborite
Billie, the General Manager is the main reason why we keep coming back to Ranch 616! He makes you feel like you’re the only person there. He always remembers your name. He’ll find you the best seats in the house. And, he’ll check on you quite often to make sure you’re enjoying your food and the ambience! Billie is the “fun maker”! Check out Ranch 616 and see what I mean. You’ll love the food, his family-like staff and most of all... Billie! Thanks for another great night Billie! We love you buddy!
In a city overrun with trendy here today, gone tomorrow restaurants I love the dependability and endurance of Ranch 616! I can always count on great service and a fantastic meal. Tonight's meal did not disappoint. Ranch 616 is my go to with out of town guests and business dinner meals. Street parking is usually widely available (pay-to-park) and the short walk is a welcome after the large portions ;)
Loved sitting outside on the patio. The food was quick to come out and the cocktails were delicious. Dressing on the Cesar salad interesting and not my taste but the crispy oysters and crab appetizers were amazing.
Food & service were wonderful as always! Love the staff & team at 616! No better lunch, happy hour drinks or dinner than 616 in Austin!
Hayley was our waitress. She made the whole experience delightful. Food was good! Water glasses were unique. Just getting tooo old for higher noise levels.
After getting a strong recommendation from a friend who loves Ranch 616, we were somewhat disappointed by the attitude of our waiter and the food. Our waiter made several rude comments and was stretched too thin so everything felt rushed. I can definitely see why people like the place because it is a very fun and lively atmosphere. My fish was bland and if it weren’t for the sauce on top I wouldn’t have eaten it at all. The brownie dessert was so dry it tasted like corn bread. They also gave us a time limit on how long we could sit at the table so sending food back was not even an option. It was just really not an enjoyable evening overall. Maybe we just caught them on a bad night.
Cool funky place, great food, nice staff, just a bit too noisy for good conversation.
Great place, exquisite food! Music too loud to enjoy your dinner companions.
Waiter was slow and inattentive- took 30 minutes to get get drink and appetizer order taken. Clearly not staffed appropriately or with quality people. Packed with bachelor and bachelorette parties. Wouldn’t recommend going anymore. Sad to say, as it’s been an Austin establish for decades.
Ranch 616 is a long standing favorite - the food is always good; the service is great; and the eclectic atmosphere is uniquely Austin. It is an ideal spot just West of downtown for a business lunch or social outing (and they take reservations)
The waiter was rude and the food was below par. I have been to this restaurant numerous times and after this last experience I don’t see myself going back.
