Raku Ratings and Reviews
Service was horribly slow. They brought the two shrimp tempura that go with the udon soup more than five minutes after the soup (which we already had waited a long time for). The shrimp were overcooked and I've had better udon soup at less expensive restaurants.
Our family of five adults celebrated Christmas Eve at Raku. It was a great experience: friendly, attentive customer service, authentic Japanese cuisine, warm lighting and cozy booths. All of their sushi rolls are delicious, and we order several to share. I like Sassy Lady, Playboy and Captain Crunch, and we always order Lost Tuna Roll and Rock Shrimp Tempura as appetizers. I also like their scallops on eggplant with a light plum sauce. My husband orders their steak teppanyaki and it is always excellent. I highly recommend Raku.
Our family of five adults regularly dines at Raku--at least once a month, often twice and usually for dinner, but lunch occasionally. We just ate there again last Saturday evening. We LOVE Raku. The only reason I haven't written a review earlier is that I don't want the place to get so popular it becomes over crowded!! My favorite appetizers are 1) scallops on eggplant-- it's four large scallops on a slice of eggplant with a slightly sweet sauce, 2) Rock Shrimp Tempura and 3) Lost Tuna. All are delicious. We also like all of their rolls including Sassy Lady, Playboy, and Captain Crunch. Very tasty and sharable. One person in our family doesn't like sushi, so he orders the beef teppanyaki--which comes flaming to the table or teriyaki with plain brown rice and it is very tasty. Grilled tilapia is with vegetables is also excellent. I've ordered as a starter the crab salad with avocado three times this summer and it's been delicious every time. The service is prompt, courteous and very helpful, always willing to explain how dishes are prepared and flavored. Ambiance enables conversation and lighting is warm and contributes to a relaxing venue.
We enjoyed this place a lot. Good food, good service. Was disappointed in how loud other couples were even tho the place was nearly empty. They made a nice place feel like a bar laughing so loud and talking over each other. We will certainly give it another shot to see if this was a one time problem.
My husband and I love Raku. The servers are kind and helpful. The sushi chefs know what they are doing. The menu is huge and although we love sushi, we have never been disppaointed when ordering a non sushi item off the menu. This is a chic, but low key restaurant. Dress: dress up if you want. It will be fine and you will fit in. But they welcome EVERYONEso don't stress out about it!
It was my daughters bday dinner and made reservations because we were craving sushi. We were sat down immediately because it was not busy, but then waited for 10 minutes and never got waited on. Also, the waiter did attend to a group of young girls that arrived shortly after we did. Not only would I have tipped more and spend more, but we arrived first. I could not have more disappointed at the level of service at a so called "upscale" place.
We go to Raku probably 6 times a year. We like the Edina Landmark Theater and will ofter catch an early movie and have dinner after. The food is always good and the variety is excellent, covering sushi and sashimi to other Japanese specialties. Never had a bad meal there.
Our family continues to enjoy dining at Raku. Appetizers of Rock Shrimp Tempura, scallops on eggplant and Lost Tuna (rolled sushi with jalepeno peppers, lettuce, caviar and a creamy sauce) are very tasty. Their rolls, especially 'Sassy Lady' and 'Playboy' are fabulous. Grilled tilapia with brown rice and sauteed vegetables is a great low-cal option. Quiet, comfy ambience with prompt, courteous service! Soft lighting is also lovely.
My family and I are regulars at the Bethesda, MD location. We've been to the Dupont Circle location, where the menu is totally different. We actually enjoyed the Georgetown location a lot, the seating outside in the summer time is a little tight. Other than that enjoyed as much as the Bethesda location. The sushi is ALWAYS fresh, the staffers are very attentive. Can't go wrong...
I love Raku. My family--all grown adults--dines here regularly. I hesitate to write a review because I don't want it to get crowded! I like the ambiance of this neighborhood gem: the soft lighting, divided seating and white leather furniture contribute to a very Japanese feel to the place. It's clean, quiet and relaxing, enabling us to have great conversations over dinner. Unique and tasty rolls such as Hurricane, Sassy Lady and Playboy are always fresher than fresh. Appetizers we especially like are Rock Shrimp Tempura and Lost Tuna. The broiled tilapia with brown rice is my daughter's favorite. My husband doesn't like sushi, so he always enjoys the Filet Mignon Toban Yaki, which comes sizzling hot to the table. Service is always impeccable.
We were stuck on Valentine's Day without plans, and realized that Monday's snow would disrupt plans we had made for the following day. To fend off cabin fever, we decided to eat close to home (in Bethesda) but didn't have reservation. First choice was Asian - and Raku is our FAV, but didn't expect to get a table. We were booked at seated within 30 mins of reservation and although the tables were a bit close to one another, we shared a great appetizer with drinks and 2 bowls of Noodle Soup without feeling rushed. The place was full of families and couples but we could carry on a conversation and got home in time for our fav Sunday night show.
We had a reservation for 6 of us Saturday, Feb 13 @ 7pm.
When we arrived, our table was ready and waiting for us! The restaurant was packed, I've never seen more that 6 tables sat there in our past visits. The service was very slow, I don't think they were prepared for Valentines weekend. The food was very good and we enjoyed our night...just wish the staff was better prepared.
Had a great birthday dinner with eight of my girlfriends. We split a bunch of sushi rolls, edamame and wine and all walked away the perfect amount of full and feeling good (ha), without breaking the bank. I would do again for a group dinner anytime. Service and food were both great.
Raku is our "go-to" restaurant for lunch or dinner with friends and visitors - always friendly service, always excellent food - fusion or sushi - and sufficient options so that non-sushi lovers can smile and say " WOW". Quiet enough to have a conversation - unlike so many places where you can communicate better by text than by voice. Also a good value - you can eat well and have a glass or bottle of wine without breaking the bank.
