Raj Darbar Indian Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The food is consistently great. Decent portions and you can choose your level of spicy which is always nice. I have tried several dishes and have not be disappointed with the food...the service on the other hand is a hit or miss. I have gone several times and have sat with an empty glass of water even after requesting some. Ice very rarely comes with the water not sure why however, I am not a fan of just chilled or much less room temperature water. The service is just never that good if the owner is not there. The last two visits I was asked by the server if I could tip in cash when I presented my credit card. It made me feel a bit uncomfortable as I never carry cash and I know the guests in the booth behind me were also taken a back by this request as they were complaining amongst themselves when they were asked to tip in cash as well. Again, the food is great but the service could be better.
It was a Monday night, so not peak time of the week, although they seemed to do a good takeout/delivery trade. I had a desire for a chicken tikka masala, although ended up going for the chicken korma. Not sure that was what I got, but still very nice. A lot of sauce, not so much chicken. Good amount of rice. Nice wine. The only problem was they forgot to bring my husbands food, despite asking how spicy etc, so the waiter had heard, the order for his didn't make it into the kitchen. It came eventually and was fine. We weren't in a hurry.
Indian cuisine was on my wife's list for her birthday. Thanks to Restaurant.com and reservations through Open Table, we discovered Raj Darbar Indian Restaurant in Lakeview. Eating early certainly makes finding a table easy. Our server helped us better understand the menu. Our sampler appetizer platter was a meal in itself. Although most items were fried, they were tasty. Out meals were very large portions, providing meals to take with us. The chicken dishes were of particular note with large chunks of succulent white meat. We'd definitely return.
If you're looking for a great Indian restaurant in Lincoln Park, this is it! Food is very tasty and well prepared. The spicinest level is just perfect! Also, you can custom your order to which spice level you want. Lots of vegan options. Great for dinner date as it won't break the bank!
If you're looking for very good Indian food, this is your spot. Best I've had in Chicago, so compliments to the kitchen. The lamb curry was outstanding, as was the paneer tikka. All of our dishes were very, very good. The service was very inexperienced, and the bar is poorly stocked. But if you can get over the normal Chicago service fetish and direct the otherwise friendly staff, and if you byob (they charge $1/person in corking fee), you'll have a great meal. Nice interior space. It seemed like they were doing lots of take-out, which makes sense. If there were a rating for take-out, Raj would get 5 stars easy.
Pretty much your standard Indian restaurant in America with the typical dishes. Ambiance is nothing special - traditional tabla music makes it a bit monotonous - they could increase the energy in here with some Bollywood music and some uniforms for the staff.
Food is decent and the tandoori chicken portion is huge and is only $14.
What can I say? The food was VERY GOOD. We went there for dinner and, despite having a lot of delicious dishes (we ate a lot), none of us felt 'heavy' the next morning. That means, the food was fresh and of good quality. Servings are GENEROUS, service is great and the ambience is pleasant. I strongly recommend this place.
The restaurant was quite busy on Saturday for dinner. The staff were very polite, but seemed a bit rushed and frazzled. Our food was delicious and way more than we could finish. I had a shrimp dish in thick tomato sauce and my partner had a curried vegetable dish. The Red Rock wine was a good compliment with both dishes. The Nan was a no.
Walking into the restaurant gets me going. The aromas are wonderful. I wish it didn't take so long to get a waiter to pay attention once we are seated and come back to take my order. Once the food finally arrives it is memorably good. I wish that I didn't feel so neglected while I watch neighboring tables eating and I can't get a waiter's attention to place my order.
Didn't quite live up to it's bib gourmand status. Pretty good Indian in a nicer location, but was hit or miss. The paratha was horrible. The palak paneer was okay. The garlic naan and malai kufta were good. The service was well meaning, but very slow. Even though the restaurant wasn't busy, it took forever for them to just set up a table for 2. They brought the check without even asking if we wanted dessert, which I would have gotten.
This is a challenging restaurant to review. The food is consistently very good (we get delivery from here frequently), and chose to dine in this time, which was a big disappointment due to the terrible service we experienced (including having to get up to get our own water refill). Bottom line: stick to delivery from Raj Darbar and save yourself a dining headache.
