Rafele Ratings and Reviews
I took a friend here for her birthday last summer and we had a great meal. I had been back several times and had dinner again last Friday night to celebrate a good friend's birthday. This restaurant has the best caponata that I have ever tasted and it is given to you with the bread. I never knew that there was a downstairs room and it was nice and quiet as upstairs every single table was taken. I had an excellent salad followed by the special fish of the day. The other people had branzino and octopus to start. Everyone loved everthing. I am returning this Saturday night with my boyfriend to celebrate my birthday!
I almost don’t want to share because I fear not being able to get a seat. Outstanding is a appropriate description. Nice wine list. Really well presented and the service was as good as always. Attentive but not hovering. A free piece of cheesecake as a bonus. Love this place. Your welcome.
Came across Rafele on a food tour several years ago and now make a point of eating here whenever I'm in Manhattan. Never disappointed! Pasta dishes are always freshly made and delicious and anything here with eggplant is memorable. Sangria, tasty and refreshing and packing a punch, is the best I've found in the city. Ambience in main dining area is warm and cozy ... downstairs not so much. I'll be back!
This incredible chef deserves a better venue with noise control and white table cloths. His food is outrageously good, the restaurant is too small, the noise is painful, but the staff is extremely good and the food an A+. Of course we were there on a Saturday night. I will go again but for lunch M=Th. I had the lamb ragout on papardelle -- such a winner.
Absolutely such a wonderful experience. I’ve been talking about it to all my friends about my dining experiencing last Friday. The restaurant is cozy and very nicely decorated. The host from the Start was welcoming and seated my part quickly. The waiter gave much appreciated recommendations. I wish I remembered his name. He was a pleasure to have - I love a funny and attentive waiter! The food is so good. So so so good! From the appetizers to the desserts. Every single person in my party was satisfied. We all agreed we would come back again. What a gem in nyc. Thank you to the staff for an awesome experience!
Three couples, two couples new to the place. My wife and I are big fans of Italian cuisine, but not big fans of Italian restaurants in general (nothing against them per se, just that we cook an awful lot of it respectably at home). In any event, Rafele turned out to be an exception to our arrogant rule. To begin with, the cauliflower appetizer (in this year of the chic and suddenly beloved cauliflower) was a riff on cauliflower "rice." It was intense, flavorful, with a good olive oil and not too heavy on the sweet Sicilian influence. I had zuppa de pesce which was not only vibrant and fresh but was presented unusually, with a baked bread crust on top. (The only other place I've seen this recently was at Eleven Madison Park, with a bread topping over a bunch of stewed mushrooms, covered with grated black truffles). I'll stop here with descriptions. Our friends' pastas were excellent. The only minor disappointment was desserts. The cheesecake seemed to have a smattering of ricotta in it, but it was essentially a NY-style cream cheese . The chocolate gelato and biscotti for dunking were fine. Our wait-person was pleasant, smart and patient. In any event, a good choice.
Rafele is a very good, no pretense Italian restaurant. They care. The food is genuine, generous in portions and delicious. Two specials, a pounded pork chop simply grilled with olive oil and lemon, and stripped bass with shaved artichoke, were elegant and delicious the dark chocolate gelato is superb. A winner.
We were there for New Year's Eve. Great food and overall friendly service. Only critical point: Although there was no official second seating we were asked at 11.00 pm to leave our table for new visitors, but were compensated by a drink at the bar. Restaurant is relly great.
