We had an incredible meal at Radio Africa during a recent visit to San Francisco. The flavors were well developed and each item we had was nicely prepared and presented.
Our favorites were the heirloom tomato salad (the tomatoes were very fresh), the smoked trout, and the white corn soup. The soup stood out with its undertone of lime and a rich broth that is hard to describe.
The entrees were equally as good. I would highly recommend this restaurant - its a bit far from where we were staying, but we loved it none the less.
Radio Africa & Kitchen is a small, out of the way place. We went here for a small & intimate family dinner to celebrate two birthdays & were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. the atmosphere is very friendly & informal. Being a Wednesday , we had the place pretty much to ourselves. Our server was efficient & friendly. The food came out in sizeable portions & all of it was DELICIOUS! They were also very accommodating when we showed up with a bottle of reserve wine to share & decanted it for us when the cork seemed to be giving out. :) Overall, a great experience. I would go back.
Radio Africa Kitchen is that rare experience in SF - a restaurant run by an experienced and inventive chef who serves really tasty dishes in generous portions that are reasonably priced. The menu is all fresh and local and changes seasonally. The chef is a master with spices. We had the spring menu which included a smoked trout dish that was to die for. All of the appetizers (Mezze) are incredible, as are the main courses we chose - lamb and spiced meatballs. And the pear and chocolate dessert was perfect. Good wine list and great service, too.
Great, fresh ingredients. Tasted like just picked. Food I appreciated very much. What I might do if I owned a restaurant; fresh, simple and wholesome. Real Food!

The food and service was great, the only negative was that they were missing many items from their menu as they were transitioning from their winter menu to their spring menu. But the food we did have was delicious and the service couldn't have been better.
Radio Africa is a not to be missed restaurant in a neighborhood that you may be hesitant to go to. Overcome that hesitation now! If you don't, you're missing some of the most delectable array of tastes ever to hit your palate. Go all out for the Tasting Menu. This is the best way to experience Chef Eskinder Aseged's luscious food. Here you'll find a blend of spices and seasonings and styles from all over with an emphasis on the freshest seasonal ingredients from wild fish, shellfish and incredibly seasoned meats to the tastiest grains and vegetable combinations.
You may have tasted the food of Radio Africa at various popups and events including La Cocina's Street Food Festival. Now it really has a chance to shine in it's own home!
We were ever so fortunate to be served directly by Chef Eskinder who carefully explained every dish and answered our multitude of questions. So what did we love? Well we, shared everything and each of wasn't always willing to part with half, but we did try to be fair. So many of the dishes have such complex flavors that burst on your tongue and palate as they open up. Do not, I repeat, do not miss the Spiced chicken soup with pomegranate, cilantro & Japanese chilies, nor the grilled leg of lamb with kufta, couscous and chermoula, the seared salmon with beluga lentils, spinach & pistachio salsa & the roasted eggplant with goat cheese, garbanzo beans, spinach & sumac. Accompanying the meal for us was a lovely Israeli Sauvignon Blanc and a yummy hibiscus lemonade. Be sure to leave room for the dessert of chocolate decadence with honey poached pears & star anise.
Can't wait to go back for a Thursday evening of live jazz and more of this incredible food.
The menu was so overloaded with intriguing options that we had difficulty deciding what to order. We will go back again and again so we can keep exploring.
the food is absolutely scrumptious. second time i've been there and it was just as good as the first. only drawback is the neighborhood. just wish it was closer to my house. but i will be back again.
The restaurant was very quiet — only 4-5 other groups in the restaurant — but service was prompt and attentive, and the food was incredible: Generous portions, cooked perfectly, and amazingly affordable. The restaurant is a bit remote, but street parking (and Muni access) is easy; I'm looking forward to coming back.
I only wish they had more wine options — my server claimed only one was available when I went, and while the option was solid, I got the impression that this was because they didn't want to open new bottles.
We went here to celebrate a special occasion. Ask for the tasting menu, which wasn't printed on the menu when we were there. We had a delicious selection of foods, ranging from soup to fish to lamb to salad, topped off with a delicious chocolate cake for dessert. It's a bit pricy, but totally worth it for a special occasion!
The food was great. The service was slow. That's because there was only one server for the whole restaurant! And no busser or host or any other help at all. The server was charming and did a terrific job - but nothing could overcome the fact that he was alone. I recommend going there but, unless this was a fluke, go when you have a lot of time and don't have to be somewhere after dinner.
This place has amazing food and service. What a surprise! We had a sampler, and every item was excellent. Smoked trout starter, off the charts. The owner was very inviting and personable as was the server. Good pace, nicely decorated, and interesting history. Want to go back soon. Only caution, not in a great part of town, so be wise in where you park and walk. (disclaimer: from a non-city persons perspective!)
Excellent tasting menu with a variety of spices and well-prepared dishes. Friendly service. A real gem in this neighborhood.
