The staff here is really nice and seem to try to a accommodate every request. The vibe is kind of a neighborhood place and feels very warm and inviting. We tried the coal roasted grapes over ricotta. It tasted like warm grapes over ricotta. It was fun nonetheless. The scallop salad was a little fishy smelling and a tad overcooked. The pork chop was cooked slightly pink and perfect. The pappersdelle with bolognese was also tasty. I think the food is basic and most dishes are good but I dont see grilled items in the $30 range.

Haven't been to Zut in a while and don't know why. Lovely brunch menu with a variety of options. Service was attentive but he was great about letting us have our time to chat. I had the Salmon Nicoise which was a VERY healthy portion. Friend had avo benedict which she said was great. Will definitely go back for lunch or dinner.

Love the place for lunch, but a very disappointing dinner. Lumpy, sticky noodles and pasta sauce advertised as Papardelle with sumo sauce and some strange uncooked soupy rice dish they dared to call Paella! Will not go back for dinner or recommend

This weekend my wife and I had dinner at Zut to celebrate my birthday--I have to say I loved it. We are vegetarians, by the way--we had the roasted brussel sprouts, mushroom ravioli, and fungi pizza. All were excellent. Excellent service from their attentive staff. 5 stars all around. I consider Zut a 'special occasion' restaurant. Great for birthdays, wedding anniversaries, graduations. Very nice interior + decor. Slightly noisy in a pleasant way. Highly recommended.

We love the atmosphere at Zut, but it's not fancy enough to not have salt and pepper on the table. My ceasar salad was watery and over dressed and the shrimp were still slightly see-through. Service was great and we will be back, but I'll order something else...

This was the last time I dined out, a year ago. So much has changedI I just dined at out again, two weeks ago. But took a reservation, and seated the two of us outside at a table for 4. It was delightful to be back at one of my favorite lunch spots.

Nice birthday lunch. But since Zut asked what occasion it was, I assumed one dessert would be on the house. It was uncomfortable to discuss in front of the birthday girl. Best not to ask if we’ll be going for an occasion if there’s no reason to let you know.

We used to like Zut but we had poor service, the food wasn't up to our expectations (although the brussels sprouts were amazing), and the staff knew it was the birthday of our friend and did not do anything about it, other than be welcomed by the hostess with a warm birthday greeting. We were seated in the smaller room next to a large family celebrating a birthday and they received full treatment when the dessert was served. We noticed that the couple next to us was served their entire meal before we even got our entree. We asked the waiter where our food was and he apologized and offered to bring bread which we accepted but he never brought. We had to ask for small plates for sharing the appetizers several times. The best service was not from the waiter but from the extra helper who was really great and should be promoted to wait staff. The ambiance and location are wonderful, and some of the dishes great, so it was a disappointment to not get great service, and not to be able to hear one another because of the noise level. More attention needs to be given to some of the dishes as well. I'm hoping it was just a fluke experience because it has been great in the past.

The Restaurant Week special advertised was Cornish game hen. We were okay with the substitution of grilled salmon, except that we ordered it medium rare and it came medium which was a bit overcooked for our taste.

The restaurant looked nice when entering. The food was just marginal. We have four different entrees, an appetizer, and dessert. The server was not attentive and just took the order and not much more than that. We were surprised on the bill be charged an extra dollar for a refill in which we had to request along with water multiple times. We found a charge for a refill ridiculous after ordering multiple $30 entrees and cocktails. So overall not a great experience. One and done. Wouldn’t recommend it to a friend either.

Zut is welcoming, has enough space between tables, classy (not motel) art on the walls. Servers are very pleasant but not intrusive, good beer on tap, complete wine list and food you actually want to eat. The sandwiches at lunch come with a side salad and are satisfying and delicious--and reasonable for what you get. I like bringing people here because they are surprised.

I love having dinner at Zut before going to Berkeley Repertory Theater. It's fun to do a bit of shopping at 4th Street, then eat an early dinner, then off to the theater. The food is tasty, there are many options and it's easy to accommodate limitations: I am dairy-free and paleo-ish and I easily find lots of yummy food on the menu. The atmosphere is casual and friendly. This is my kind of restaurant.

Zut was disappointing. The service was very slow. When two tables that had arrived 20 minutes after us were served, our 80-year-old guest asked our waiter why that was. He replied, “that doesn’t matter.” He added it was lunch time and that our food would eventually arrive. When it did, our garlic fries (the best part of the meal) showed up 10 minutes after our entrees. No explanation was given. My spouse’s salad nicoise with grilled salmon looked like it had been thrown together in 10 seconds. The big chunk of fish on top was overcooked and very dry. The bill for thee entrees, two glasses of mediocre chardonnay, one iced tea, and one order of garlic fries was more than $100. The noise level in the room was horrendous. We won’t be returning to Zut any time soon.

Zut is a fabulous place to meet friends and take family! The food is consistently delicious and satisfying. This time I was taking out my 92 year old mom to meet up with my friends. It did not disappoint. We had appies to share, great salads, tasty pizzas and delicious main dishes. Best of all, mom could have her martini, me my classic Manhattan, my friends their wine, beer or other well drink. I seem to always go here and close the place too!

I called Zut because I made an error booking the reservation. While we came to an agreement on a solution before I arrived, when our party did arrive the high chair was a foot from the table - making it impossible for our baby to eat. I asked for a different 6 top - not a bigger table beyond the reservation I made in error - and the hostess and the manager were beyond rude and would not listen. Again - I made an error but could not cancel bc of the $30 charge per person which was not clearly stated before I made the reservation. I was happy to squeeze onto a six top, but one where my child could have also eaten. Beyond that, the food was overpriced and bland. Our server was nice and helpful but the manager and hostess had already done enough damage. I do not plan to ever return.

Zut offers a great location for a last minute celebration dinner. Tends to have reservations left for grad night, Xmas eve and other occasions when other restaurants are booked. Downside - food can be hit or miss. Risotto was a disturbing Pepto Bismol pink and poorly seasoned. Other dishes were enjoyable. Pizza tends to be a safe pick.

Ignored by staff after seated outside. Had to approach Maitre D’ to request a server who then repeatedly failed to perform at minimal levels of expectation. Examples: 2 entrees served while 2 others weren’t ready and served much later, side order requested 2 or more times and finally arrived at end of the meal(it was comped), rack of lamb was literally served as near raw- blood red meat, pasta was mushy. We dine here frequently and were very disappointed in this Christmas Eve meal. The staff looked unfamiliar-maybe a backup crew?

Each couple shared an appetizer and a main course and no one went away hungry. We had the sausage pizza with a caesar salad. The salad was mediocre but the pizza was good. The other two couples had pasta dishes and brussel sprouts and crab cakes. They all seemed pretty happy with what they had. Service was fine. The ambiance was lively (which means noisy) but you could carry on a conversation. The selection of wines by the glass was good. Fourth Street was decorated so prettily for Christmas that was an extra bonus. We went to this restaurant for dinner after a Sunday theater matinee and it was perfect for that.
