Italian
Zio Peppe is where tradition meets innovation, serious collides with playful, and gourmet converges with casual. Zio Peppe means “Uncle Joe’ in Italian, and just like a beloved “funcle” – a fun uncle, Zio Peppe will make sure all are welcome, and everybody is having a good time.

Zio Peppe is a collaboration between Chef Devon Sanner and Chef Mat Cable. Our menu is anchored in Italian-American classics of pizza and pasta, but draws heavy influence from the foods and flavor profiles of Tucson and the Sonoran region.

Sanner joins forces with Cable after having cooked under Tucson culinary legend Janos Wilder for the past 15 years, serving as chef at Janos, JBAR, Downtown + Cocktails, and The Carriage House.

Zio Peppe, which means “Uncle Joe” in Italian, is in part a tribute to Cable’s uncle, Joe Sottosanti, who opened Tucson’s first Sicilian pizza place, Tesseo’s Pizzeria, nearly 50 years ago.

We arrived before noon on a Monday and practically had the whole place to ourselves. What a treat this place is! The staff was kind and helpful and the food was SO good! The kids each had Fettuccine Alfredo and my husband and I shared the mushroom risotto and the fig pizza. My son said that we are always going to come to this restaurant when we visit Tucson! Thank you for a great experience and meal!

We went on a night that they had a special menu, so we weren’t able to try the regular menu items. But what we had was fantastic. I chose to do the wine pairing with each dish and it really rounded out the experience. My favorite dish was the lobster ravioli. And they house make their limoncello and orangecello. The orangecello was out of this world. I ended up getting a second glass.

I booked the reservation on Open Table. It offerred me the choice of the special Valentine's day meal or the a la carte menu. I soecifically chose the a la carte menu. When we got to the restaurant, we were told there was no a la carte menu. Thus we were stuck with having that or leaving. We stayed. The couple beside us got up and left. There is no sign on the street showing the restaurant. Hard to find unless you have been there before.

My family and I really enjoyed our meal at Zio Peppe. The one thing we didn’t realize though when we first entered is that you get seated at a table, but then you need to go up to place your orders for drinks, appetizers and dinner. Initially, I thought this would detract from the dining experience, since we expected a regular sit down restaurant with full service, but the food was exceptional, and the value very good for a place with this quality of food, and though we didn’t have a regular server, the staff was very attentive whenever we needed anything which more than made up for not having a dedicated server for our table. The Elote Arancini appetizer was absolutely delicious as other reviewers had noted, and we got two orders for our table of 6. We ordered 3 pizzas: the Figgy Stardust, Umami Tsunami, and the Carnitas pizza. All three were very good, though the table favorite was definitely the Umami Tsunami (I recommend the red chili flakes on top of that to make it spicier if you like spice). For pasta, we had the Wolf and Shrimp Linguini which is made with Wolfberry pasta and came with large succulent shrimp, and the Fettuccini Alfredo with the optional upgrade with the red chili purée (AKA the “Fettuccini Alfredorado”) with chicken. Both dishes were absolutely delicious and devoured by our group. Too bad we don’t live in Tucson or we would be regulars here. We are all already looking forward to visiting again when we are back in town.

My boyfriend and I really enjoy this restaurant but tonight they missed the mark. The appetizers were served cold and had to be returned. We also ordered a pizza, when we went to pick up a slice the toppings slid right off and the dough was still semi-raw. We were very disappointed with our dinner tonight.

Food was solid except the risotto had a strange sweet taste which doesn’t go with squid ink. Service was spotty. 10-15 min before order was taken. About 45 min before entree came out. Could hAve been better service since it was a prix fixe menu and only a total of 8 dishes for the kitchen to prepare.

VERY Disappointed this time dining at Zoo Peppe. It was first time dining there for dinner. I have eaten lunch twice at Zio Peppe and had Pizza's both times. I wanted my husband to try this place since there are no restaurants in Tucson Other than one that is consistent in flavor and quality (and service). First off: This is not a $$ restaurant. It is more like a $$$. We had to pay up front, so if we wanted dessert you need to go back and do another transaction. But we passed on that. Our dinner, one appetizer and one glass of wine cost $82 before tip. They give you rolled silverware with flimsy paper napkins to use. For the price we should have linen napkins and table side service. We shared the calamari. It was actually Very good and we were happy it started on a positive note. I ordered Wolf shrimp and linguine dish. My husband had the braised short rib with polenta. My husbands braised short rib was flat of flavor. The polenta was seasoned with of course butter and probably with salt and pepper, but you really couldn't taste any other profile. It was bland. The braised rib was not much to right home about. much flavor - usually the rib with have some wonderful flavor profiles to compliment a basic butter polenta or visa versa. My husband said I make better short ribs than this. The shrimp were not prepared in any special way other than some salt and pepper and thrown into pasta and sauce. Some of my shrimp had a fishy ( not good fishy) taste. My dish was over powered by massive lemon. My pasta was very pasty. I know this chef /owner worked with Janos Wilder but definitely did not shine through here because flavors were not indicative to what the menu stated ! Very disappointed and probably will not return

Food was excellent. We liked the new take using some favorite ingredients. The Elote, mushroom risotto and Birra pizza were all good! Everyone we interacted with was very nice, happy & professional. The only issues were a very uneven table that kept rocking and the fact we had to keep going up to the cash register to order food and drinks each time which we thought was odd since they take reservations. All in all we liked the experience and these things can be overlooked, it will not keep us from returning. Nice jobs guys, thank you!

Pizza wasn’t bad. Had Bianca and friend had the fig and goat cheese. Pricey for the pizza and one iced tea. Cost $27 for one person with tip. Crust a little tough and tasted and looked like it was a wheat crust, which menu did not state. I would go back and try the pastas or risotto. But not the pizza anymore. One person took care of all the tables. It took a while before our drink orders were taken but we weren’t in a rush. You’re supposed to order food at counter but no sign

Pizza is excellent. Best I have had in Tucson. Great chewy, crispy crust and just right amount of cheese and sauce. The fig pizza is also delish. Could be a dessert. I also had the salmon which was very good. Hubby really enjoyed the bolognese. There’s not real waiter service, have to order at the counter, but food is well worth it!

We went in expecting just another Italian joint, but we were quite pleasantly surprised to find an extremely creative menu that I would call more southwest-Italian fusion. The menu is unique and everything we have tried is fantastic! The goat cheese spread and bread is delicious as a starter, and my personal favorite is the Figgy Stardust pizza…a magical mix of goat cheese, bacon, figs and a pomegranate drizzle. Amazing!

I was surprised to find the restaurant far from busy considering the write-ups I have seen about it. The food lived up to those encomiums. I was also surprised that it was not a full-service restaurant but more on the order of a fast-casual place, where your order is taken and paid for at a counter and delivered to the table when ready. Still, it was clear that the food was made to order and that the chef-owner took great pride in making the food just so.
