Italian
Zio Peppe is where tradition meets innovation, serious collides with playful, and gourmet converges with casual. Zio Peppe means “Uncle Joe’ in Italian, and just like a beloved “funcle” – a fun uncle, Zio Peppe will make sure all are welcome, and everybody is having a good time.

Zio Peppe is a collaboration between Chef Devon Sanner and Chef Mat Cable. Our menu is anchored in Italian-American classics of pizza and pasta, but draws heavy influence from the foods and flavor profiles of Tucson and the Sonoran region.

Sanner joins forces with Cable after having cooked under Tucson culinary legend Janos Wilder for the past 15 years, serving as chef at Janos, JBAR, Downtown + Cocktails, and The Carriage House.

Zio Peppe, which means “Uncle Joe” in Italian, is in part a tribute to Cable’s uncle, Joe Sottosanti, who opened Tucson’s first Sicilian pizza place, Tesseo’s Pizzeria, nearly 50 years ago.

The food was good and the staff is nice, but it Zio Peppe is not a good date spot. Even if you make a reservation, you have to wait in line at the checkout counter and talk to the cashier when you get there. Then they give you menus which you can review at the counter or at your table. Then you get up and order your food from a counter, and someone brings your order to your table. Because they do not operate like a standard restaurant (you do not have a dedicated server but rather just various helpers from around the restaurant), certain things slip through the cracks. For example, they just bring food out when it’s cooked so you better have finished your previous dish and have enough room available on your table for the next course to be delivered, or you’ll be forced to scoot things around and make room for the next course while you’re still eating your first course. Another example: I was out of water for like 40 minutes and then I just got up and filled up myself. Maybe I should have known that I have to get up and walk over to the fountain to get my own water. Honestly I probably won’t be back unless I’m alone and just want to buy food over a counter.

First time here and we were a group of six. The food was very good, but it was the style of the restaurant that put us off. You order at the front counter and get a number, then staff brings drinks and food to your table. Half our group had pasta, the other half had pizza. All the pasta arrived and we were nearly done eating before the others got their pizzas. Timing of the food was awful. Staff were run and drop kind of service. It was odd…the food quality was so high, but the cafeteria style of everything else watered down the experience. I would maybe only go as a couple to dine here and would share a pizza or if both got a pasta dish. There is little to no effort to how the food (and drinks for that matter) come from the kitchen. The seemed to have a pretty busy carry out business, so that could be an option, too.

This could easily be a fav with just a few changes. The pizza is really good but doesn’t need to be so large. The ordering at the counter rather than a server seems to get backed up and doesn’t save anything. The food comes out quickly but it just loses something by having the half service model.

Beware!!! There is no air conditioning in this place and it is incredibly hot inside. Made for an unpleasant experience. You order at the counter and they bring you your food. The prices are high. Food was good but for the price, likely won’t be back.

Wow, what great fresh food. We had a charcuterie board, a shared Cesar salad (fantastic croutons(, and shared aBianca pizza with quite a few glasses of wine. What a nice time on the patio . We will be back for sure! It is currently “bistro” style where you order at the cash register and then if you want something else you have to go back up to the register. It was fine but the great food & nice atmosphere might best fit table service. A must try!

We arrived before noon on a Monday and practically had the whole place to ourselves. What a treat this place is! The staff was kind and helpful and the food was SO good! The kids each had Fettuccine Alfredo and my husband and I shared the mushroom risotto and the fig pizza. My son said that we are always going to come to this restaurant when we visit Tucson! Thank you for a great experience and meal!

We went on a night that they had a special menu, so we weren’t able to try the regular menu items. But what we had was fantastic. I chose to do the wine pairing with each dish and it really rounded out the experience. My favorite dish was the lobster ravioli. And they house make their limoncello and orangecello. The orangecello was out of this world. I ended up getting a second glass.

I booked the reservation on Open Table. It offerred me the choice of the special Valentine's day meal or the a la carte menu. I soecifically chose the a la carte menu. When we got to the restaurant, we were told there was no a la carte menu. Thus we were stuck with having that or leaving. We stayed. The couple beside us got up and left. There is no sign on the street showing the restaurant. Hard to find unless you have been there before.

My family and I really enjoyed our meal at Zio Peppe. The one thing we didn’t realize though when we first entered is that you get seated at a table, but then you need to go up to place your orders for drinks, appetizers and dinner. Initially, I thought this would detract from the dining experience, since we expected a regular sit down restaurant with full service, but the food was exceptional, and the value very good for a place with this quality of food, and though we didn’t have a regular server, the staff was very attentive whenever we needed anything which more than made up for not having a dedicated server for our table. The Elote Arancini appetizer was absolutely delicious as other reviewers had noted, and we got two orders for our table of 6. We ordered 3 pizzas: the Figgy Stardust, Umami Tsunami, and the Carnitas pizza. All three were very good, though the table favorite was definitely the Umami Tsunami (I recommend the red chili flakes on top of that to make it spicier if you like spice). For pasta, we had the Wolf and Shrimp Linguini which is made with Wolfberry pasta and came with large succulent shrimp, and the Fettuccini Alfredo with the optional upgrade with the red chili purée (AKA the “Fettuccini Alfredorado”) with chicken. Both dishes were absolutely delicious and devoured by our group. Too bad we don’t live in Tucson or we would be regulars here. We are all already looking forward to visiting again when we are back in town.

My boyfriend and I really enjoy this restaurant but tonight they missed the mark. The appetizers were served cold and had to be returned. We also ordered a pizza, when we went to pick up a slice the toppings slid right off and the dough was still semi-raw. We were very disappointed with our dinner tonight.

Food was solid except the risotto had a strange sweet taste which doesn’t go with squid ink. Service was spotty. 10-15 min before order was taken. About 45 min before entree came out. VERY Disappointed this time dining at Zoo Peppe. It was first time dining there for dinner. I have eaten lunch twice at Zio Peppe and had Pizza's both times. I wanted my husband to try this place since there are no restaurants in Tucson Other than one that is consistent in flavor and quality (and service). First off: This is not a $$ restaurant. It is more like a $$$. We had to pay up front, so if we wanted dessert you need to go back and do another transaction. But we passed on that. Our dinner, one appetizer and one glass of wine cost $82 before tip. They give you rolled silverware with flimsy paper napkins to use. For the price we should have linen napkins and table side service. We shared the calamari. It was actually Very good and we were happy it started on a positive note. I ordered Wolf shrimp and linguine dish. My husband had the braised short rib with polenta. My husbands braised short rib was flat of flavor. The polenta was seasoned with of course butter and probably with salt and pepper, but you really couldn't taste any other profile. It was bland. The braised rib was not much to right home about. much flavor - usually the rib with have some wonderful flavor profiles to compliment a basic butter polenta or visa versa. My husband said I make better short ribs than this. The shrimp were not prepared in any special way other than some salt and pepper and thrown into pasta and sauce. Some of my shrimp had a fishy ( not good fishy) taste. My dish was over powered by massive lemon. My pasta was very pasty. I know this chef /owner worked with Janos Wilder but definitely did not shine through here because flavors were not indicative to what the menu stated ! Very disappointed and probably will not return
