About ZINC- Philadelphia

This second restaurant of Olivier Desaintmartin, ZINC is no less than a replica of a “le Marais” style bar restaurant, artists most preferred section of Paris. Le Marais is also the oldest part of the French capital.

Desaintmartin bought a 1919 zinc bar from a Parisian bar, refinished it, and shipped it to this quaint 40 seats bar/restaurant.

Acclaimed for its food, romance and its specialty drinks, Zinc becomes a hang out for locals, a meeting place. You can share a charcuterie or a fromage plate with a glass of Chinon, or sit at the bar sipping a French aperitif waiting for your party, or enjoy some oysters with a Muscadet.

The bistro menu is the same for brunch and dinner so at any time of the day you may choose to order eggs Benedict or steak frites or even just an apple tart with a “coupe “ of Blanquette de Limoux (sparkling wine).

As always, the food was wonderful. While we tend to save Zinc for special occasions, it is also the place we go when we just want to be sure that our dinner is completely satisfying - both in taste and in relaxation.

Only one waiter on duty and unorganized, with every table occupied. My partner ordered the steak and came out cold, was never offered to query whether would like to be make a new one or reheat, simply took it back and brought back still cold. My advise is simply save your time and trouble not to come to this place.

The food was excellent! I brought foodie friends from out of town and had an amazing time. My only critique is it a small restaurant and when it is full it gets a bit loud... but certainly not a reason to forgo checking out this great place!!!

Seriously overbooked on Valentine's Day, a day you do NOT want to run into problems. When we arrived a few minutes early for our reservation, there were 3 parties ahead of us, two of which had reservations for 15 minutes earlier than ours. No one at tables seemed ready to leave and I felt embarrassed to have to look over the crowd myself to get an estimate of wait time. No host or wait staff even came over to mollify any of us. I've never faced a situation like this and my date and I had to phone around to see what resto nearby could seat us. Needless to say we left when we found an alternative. But if we hadn't it would have been a pretty bitter evening...

We made reservations but still had to wait 30 minutes. There's was no sign that there would be a prixe fix dinner menu on their website, however, when we got there it was 50 a person ( or 55 I don't remember which). They forgot to give us bread for the table and we never got any. We were there for a total of two hours and could barely get any service. Our drinks where empty most of the time ( wine and water). Then they gave us the check without giving us the desert that was included in the menu. We had to ask if we could have the desert we already paid for. It was terrible!!!!!

Wow what a well kept French Bistro secret! We had a lovely Sunday night there. Beef bourguignon was outstanding. Deep dark reduction was amazing. The beef rib was tender and very tasty. Really well done. My wife had the salmon with a Lobster Risotto. The Lobster Risotto was superb. The Salmon was also very good but the portion size was skimpy if not disappointing. The French onion soup was also noteworthy with a rich broth and excellent gruyere cheese. We skipped dessert as we were full but enjoyed wonderful cup of coffee and a delightful couple cookies that went with the check. TRY THIS PLACE!

Great food, disappointing service. Went in on the Saturday before Valentine's day, and the place was totally overbooked and staff overwhelmed. However as a business one should be anticipating this and not over-booking and allowing for parties to sit longer before reserving the same table for another party during times like this. We waited almost 10 minutes past our reservation time before being acknowledge by a staff member who told us we would be seated shortly. We waited a total of 45 minutes. YES 45 minutes past our reservation we were finally seated and by the time the waiter came over to offer us menus it had to be almost another 10 minutes. Once seated we had to bargain with him to at least get a class of champagne on the house due to the ridiculous wait. I have worked in the service industry and if we had a party waiting even more than 15 minutes for a reservation the least we would do is give them a drink on the house, or even at least ask for water. We stood at the entrance for 45 minutes and were not even asked if we would like a glass of water; very poor service. When asked about the food and wine list the waiter was not knowledgable, however he was kind. The food was absolutely delicious and the white wine list had good choices, however the red wine list was lacking. Overall the food was delicious, but when dining at establishments such as Zinc one expects a certain level of service which Zinc completely lacked, very disappointing.

We were there on Super Bowl Sunday and we were one of three tables. So, service was great but the food was amazingly good for a small restaurant. We would go again and I would recommend it

Boyfriend and I did the restaurant week prefix menu. For the most part, all the food was satisfactory, except the steak, which was so very rare as to be a bit purple, instead of medium as requested. I did very much enjoy the potato-leek soup and the dessert. The closeness of the tables made it so the waitress was unable to really get to our table and we wound up waiting for our check for over 30 minutes. Overall we felt that the meal we got was a good value for the restaurant week price, but we would never return and pay full price for food that was fine, but not memorable.

We had ninner during restaurant week so w can't speak of the normal menu. A sweet restaurant. Good service. The by-the-glass house wine was better than OK. So was the food: very good but not surprising. I had the streak and frites. Steak was tough but tasty. Overall, a very pleasant experience and we will go bach there.

We came here for our daughter's birthday. Food was very tasty and wine pours generous. My quail had a generous stuffing of foie gras, which was a steal for the price. Hubby had the delicate salmon and daughter tried the scallops which came with a superb sauce. We didn't get a desert but still got a nice birthday candle with their biscotti. Overall, a great experience.

We went for Restaurant Week but will be back! Every course was well prepared and delicious from the vichyssoise amuse to the rustic pate to the steak frites. We all chose this as our main and none we're disappointed. The truffle fries were especially crispy and flavorful and the steak perfectly grilled. The chocolate marquiss cake is a not to be missed decadent pleasure.

Pot de crème!! Exquisite exclamation point to a delicious dinner. A simple selection of classic French dishes, including seafood and vegetarian options. A gracious server. I dined there alone when in the city on business. Felt like time in a cozy Paris restaurant.

Excellent find for a last-minute dining alone...until a colleague joined me unexpectedly. Chef's martini (vodka, gin, Lillet) was excellent with my salad, and a nice glass of red wine with an outstanding duck breast. After six years living in Lyon, I was quite pleased to find this French restaurant during a conference visit...and will be back!

A true little French bistro in Philadelphia. Warm, cozy, creative menu with intimate service.
Enjoyed a lovely dinner. Great French cooking and not all creamy, which is helpful to lactose intolerant people who love French cooking.

Food and service were incredible. The atmosphere felt like a romantic Parisian cafe. Only two recommendations for the owner. The chairs could be more comfortable. Although we appreciated the quiet atmosphere, I gave that category a low rating because the music did not fit the atmosphere. Jazz or French music in the background would have been perfect. The disco and tehno music didn't fit the mood.

Portions were very small, and the wine list was limited. For $65 we had a quite pedestrian St. Emilion; I could buy better for $20 in a store. My portion of meat on the steak frittes must have been about 4 oz., just a nibble for $27. My date's quail was better. We did not stay for dessert or coffee. The restaurant has a good reputation. Perhaps it was just an off (snowy) night.

Quaint and small. Very French, not a lot of offerings for those who don't eat adventurously. But then, why dine here in the first place? The bar is not stocked with the full range of liqueurs, and liquors, that you might find at other high end restaurants. Our service was good, octopus, bronzino and salmon were all overcooked; rabbit was done to perfection. Dessert: order the profiteroles, they were delish. Wish we had known the restaurant wanted 2 days notice on the pressed duck. That would have been almost the entire table's first choice. All in all, a nice experience. Will go back, but not immediately.
