About ZINC- Philadelphia

This second restaurant of Olivier Desaintmartin, ZINC is no less than a replica of a “le Marais” style bar restaurant, artists most preferred section of Paris. Le Marais is also the oldest part of the French capital.

Desaintmartin bought a 1919 zinc bar from a Parisian bar, refinished it, and shipped it to this quaint 40 seats bar/restaurant.

Acclaimed for its food, romance and its specialty drinks, Zinc becomes a hang out for locals, a meeting place. You can share a charcuterie or a fromage plate with a glass of Chinon, or sit at the bar sipping a French aperitif waiting for your party, or enjoy some oysters with a Muscadet.

The bistro menu is the same for brunch and dinner so at any time of the day you may choose to order eggs Benedict or steak frites or even just an apple tart with a “coupe “ of Blanquette de Limoux (sparkling wine).

Usually a good experience but Friday night neither my husband nor I had a good experience with our entrees. My husband ordered the rabbit and found portions of it un-chewable as if some other substance were mixed in that could not be completely chewed. My mussels were a bit under-cooked a smelled so fishy, even with a whole lemon, that I could not eat them. The room was a joy because it was quiet and we could engage is modulated conversation.

Classical french cuisine of the 20th century. Food quantity was adequate ( according to international standards and nothing comparable to american portions). Food quality was fair, although a bit too expensive for this bistro type of cuisine. The cost of wine kills everything : very few wine under $60, and sold probably around 4X the store price. The cost/quality ratio is therefore very poor. Service is at french speed (what we appreciate, but americans could find it slow), and the chairs are not very comfortable.

Cozy, comfortable French cafe with very good food. My one recommendation for the escargot appetizer is to avoid putting the sauce on top of the puff pastry so that it remains crispy. Other than that minor issue, the food was wonderful. The desserts especially are divine. Overall, a wonderful place for a French dinner.

We love to go back to Zinc. The ambiance is authentic French and the food delights. My salad with warm goat cheese in a thin pastry was delicious. Hangar steak/frites was very good, except I liked it better when they served it without gravy and with Béarnaise sauce. Also, portions are getting too large.

Zinc was lovely. It's a very pretty, quiet, soothing room - with a small bar - nice window seating for people watching. The food was uniformly excellent. Pretty traditional french - I had a really delicious rainbow trout, over a bed of french lentils - delicious, not too overwhelming portions. A yummy goat cheese salad and apple tart completed the picture. My dining companions were equally please with their choices.

Drinks were well made, and reasonably priced. The room is small, but there were a couple of largish parties, and we were able to converse very comfortably, with some sense of privacy. Service was very pleasant, and without pretension. Another example of how Philadelphia is a very accomplished restaurant town.

As usual, dinner was great. The menu has changed. I was disappointed to see that there were fewer "small" portions available and that a fixed price menu would be in effect from June until September.

I discovered this restaurant about five years ago with one of my best friends Karen, we were walking past on our way to another restaurant and said "we'll have to eat here next year" and we did! and fell in love with the place.
This visit I ordered a Leffe Belgium beer, a French Croix de Roche sparkling Rosè and Ducky ordered a Jean-Luc Columbia French dry Rosè with their sea bass seafood special and a fabulous salad with crispy feta. (feta wrapped in Filo dough quick fried then drizzled with balsamic).
Finished the meal with a fine absinthe!
Impeccable service impeccable food, super ambience!
My Dionysian Friends, if you have not eaten here already please make a point to check it out !!

I've never been disappointed at Zinc. A cozy restaurant with a zinc bar imported from France, this place is the real deal. The food is absolutely fabulous. Close your eyes and you can imagine yourself in Paris.

A Philadelphia gem!

Zinc is a French bistro with authentic Parisian ambience and a menu to match. Food is traditional French bistro delights. Mushrooms in puff pastry are well prepared in a dark wine sauce. Scallops and shrimp with cauliflower and a seafood sauce are perfectly cooked and flavorful. Steak frites, rabbit, and fish are all cooked and sauced to perfection. Service in the small, cozy restaurant is attentive without being overbearing. I recommend it.

This was our second visit to Zinc and while the food was equal to our first (wonderful) experience, this visit was marred by an odd waiter experience. First, every wine I requested, the waiter would go-off and return to tell me that that bottle was sold-out. One such example on a wine list is acceptable. When it happens twice, it began to feel like the waiter was forcing us to but a more expensive bottle. So, we didn't. That was a disappointment. Second, we clearly indicted that we had a theatre time to make and asked that the one first course we ordered for the table be brought with the entree course. That single first course came-out almost immediately and then we had to wait for our entrees until we almost did not have time to enjoy them. So, again, great food, intimate and enjoyable atmosphere, but strange service.

I had a rabbit stew, which tasted like dry chicken. My husband had tuna nicois, which was very good. Chocolate mousse in a tiny cup was excellent, light, creamy, and not too sweet.

A cozy, charming and authentic little French bistro. This is a special spot tucked in on 11th Street in Philadelphia has consistently warm and efficient service. Chef willingly accommodated lactose intolerance issue with a yummy alternative sauce for perfectly cooked scallops and shrimp. Salmon was creatively prepared on a bed of lobster risotto and the tender grilled octopus is a treat too.

Really authentic French Bistro in the heart of the city and a fine pre-theater option. The octopus appetizer was creative and the octopus was incredibly tender. A wonderful dish! Entrees were perfectly-cooked foie de veau accompanied by au gratin potatoes and spinach that were so good I finished every bit, and a delicious large serving of cod in a wonderful butter sauce. A great meal.

Hadn't been there in over a year. Menu choices and wine were superior. Bistro atmosphere in a small setting. We are Walnut Theater patrons so dinner (sans wine) was 15% off, also.

This was our first time at Zinc and we loved it so much. It was cozy and romantic. We ordered the cheese plate, which was outstanding. Both of us had the beef bourguione which was to die for! The chocolate flourless cake was a perfect ending. Great service. We will return.

Our second trip to Zinc did not disappoint! We all got various meals and everyone thought theirs better than their neighbors. Outstanding were the rabbit, the moules frites and the escargot cassoulet.
Our server paired a great wine with all, and knew his stuff. Thanks, Zinc!

It was a special occasion and we drove about 60 miles to dine at Zinc. As always, it was well worth the ride. Starting with the cocktails and on through appetizers, entrees and dessert, everything was superb. Our server, David, was all you could ask for with his friendly, knowledgeable service. We had questions about a few menu items and David had all the answers. He was totally attentive but never intrusive. If you enjoy fine French cuisine, served in a cozy atmosphere, Zinc is the place to try.

Its one of my family's favorite restaurants. My sister who lives in NYC always comes here when she visits. This time I met the owner who was as charming as the restaurant. He was cooking that night too.

Food is exquisite and as close as you will get to a Paris Bistro

We went for a pre-theater meal. The service was excellent and the server was mindful of our time constraints (we came 1.5 hr before the show started to have time to dine leisurely and to walk several blocks to the theater). The food was excellent and had a great variety of foods that are not on the menus of many of the restaurants that we frequent. It is a great French BIstro.

After superb starters and main dishes, I did not think the deserts livved up to the food and drinks.

Only one waiter on duty and unorganized, with every table occupied. My partner ordered the steak and came out cold, was never offered to query whether would like to be make a new one or reheat, simply took it back and brought back still cold. My advise is simply save your time and trouble not to come to this place.
