I made a reservation but the restaurant didn’t honor the reservation system. They were open but were not sitting customers due to a catering event. It would have been more appropriate to update the reservation system or call the customers who had reservation and inform them about the circumstances. Driving to the restaurant and learning that the restaurant wasn’t sitting customer isn’t a good practice.
Appetizers (edamame and a rainbow trout ceviche) were very good. Two of our rolls were generally good (though not as spicy as expected), and the branzalino (sp?) roll was excellent. The flight of sake was also very good. The service was very good. The atmosphere while we were there was relatively quiet, although it is the type of place that I could see getting loud if it had been more crowded. Having TVs in the back dining area (rather than just facing the middle bar area) was a little odd, and hurt the atmosphere a bit, I think (though I’ll admit to checking scores out as the night progressed). The cost was about what you’d expect for a nice restaurant in this area. Overall, very good; we will come here again.
Every piece on every plate was fresh and vibrant. The presentation was beautiful. Christian, our server, was knowledgeable and friendly, and offered the perfect suggestions while guiding us through the menu. We had a delicious and memorable experience. Thank you Zento!
Zento was a bit of a disappointment after reading all the great reviews. My husband and I ordered sushi but we found the rice a bit 'wet.' The Tamago sushi was squishy and wet, it must have been frozen before. The portions and value is great, definitely not the best sushi. My salad was over dressed as well. If you're looking for authentic, look elsewhere.
Three friends for a Saturday ladies night out. We requested a relatively quiet table and we were able to hear each other just fine (sitting right up front - we didn't mind. Not much change from outdoor temperature during a hot July night). The service wasn't perfect but we were far away from our servers other tables, and also we didn't need much attention. Our waitress was kind, helpful, understanding, and warm. Food was delicious. 2 miso soups, 4 specialty rolls, 1 app, 2 desserts = less than $30/pp. Highly recommend and will be going back for more occasions!
I had never been to Zento until last night 7/15/17 and didn't know what to expect. My date and I shared 2 apps. One was tuna tartare and the the other was a very small yellowtail sashimi. Both were enjoyable with the tuna being very good and the other was good despite the very small portion size. The rolls were very good and desert of fried ice cream was OK. I definitely would go back as I like the vibe of the area.
Very fresh sushi and great service! We've been to Zento once before using a Groupon too. Great location in Center City Philly near many tourist attractions. The only downside is that the main restaurant is very dim, beyond romantic. Be prepared to use the flashlight on your phone to see the menu details.

I have been to Zento a bunch of times, and the food is consistently good. There are cheaper places in Philadelphia, but the quality matches the price, so is definitely worth it. The waiters are the right amount of attentive and friendly, and during weekdays they allow you to BYO bottle. I highly recommend Zento!
Prior to our visit we looked at the website which listed entree options other than sushi. When we went to the restaurant they told us they no longer offer any entrees other than sushi. I was very disappointed because my husband doesn't eat sushi and had very little option to choose from.
Decor is nice and server was as well, but the food was really sub-par. Sushi rolls were nothing special and the salmon teriyaki my wife and I both got was so salty it overpowered the fish. Presentation was wanting, and Sauvignon Blanca had no flavor. I expect more in this location of Philadelphia.
I was looking forward to trying this place after reading decent reviews online and was already disappointed upon arrival as the entrance to this place was difficult to find and blocked with overflowing trash bins. Looking past this, my mother and I walked in and asked to be seated upstairs at which time we were told there no longer was one - they had recently closed it. Not a huge deal. The waitress walked us past a warn down looking bar situated in a narrow hallway into a shoebox of a room that was the main dining area. I was looking around for the rest of the restaurant- the images online are so deceiving. There are about 6 tables total, situated in a U-shape around the parameter of the room, all facing the bar. Beautiful, very large Asian backdrop behind us and an unpleasant front view of 2 large flatscreen TV's playing a basketball game. With such a small space housing a fairly busy bar, 6 full tables and two sports games, the noise level was on high. Ambiance is awkward and confusing. Our waitress brought waters over to our table a few minutes after we sat down and asked us if we'd lik anything else to drink. We were really interested in trying a good sake (as this place advertises itself as a sushi and sake bar) and looked to our waitress for some suggestions to conclude that she either didn't know much about the different options on the menu or didn't want to be bothered with our questions because she was no help at all. We ended up choosing a $35 bottle of sake from the minimal info the menu description gave and ended up hating it. Although we felt bad sending it back, I wasn't ok with $35 down the drain in our first 10 minutes there. Again, some help with selecting a suitable sake in the first place would have been nice. We ordered another, run of the mill sake that took 20 mins to arrive, coming after our luke-warm, overly fishy sushi and dumplings. We couldn't push ourselves past a couple of bites and left hungry and disappointed as soon as we could.
We decided to try a sushi place we haven't been to for something new and quickly realized why we go to some of the same places in Philly. Initially our waitress brought water over immediately which was good but then we found ourselves just waiting around with menus and no drink ordered even placed. We were seated approximately 10 minutes to 9pm, and a little over 40 minutes we finally received our first drinks. I will say the Avocado martini was at least a good drink. As for the food, the real california roll did not taste fresh. The rest of sushi which consisted of all specialty rolls ranked ok-good. Unfortunately nothing really stood out to make us feel as though we'd go back.
My two friends and I ate at Zento on a Thursday night, so it's difficult to gauge how loud/energetic the restaurant would be on the weekend. The service was pleasant and attentive and the green salad was delicious. We were all happy with our sushi choices, and even though the special rolls were a little on the pricey side, they were delicious.
This place gets 1 star only because their food was edible and did not make anyone in my party sick.
Last year, I hosted a party at this restaurant and everything was fine except for the long wait for the food-- but I figured it was because I had such a big party and that was OK especially because we had our own room upstairs.
This year, things changed and there is only a downstairs now. I made the reservation on opentable and got three phone calls demanding that I had to give them a credit card number to hold the space because it was their new policy. I wasn't very comfortable with this, but I did it.
We got to the restaurant and the place was not set up for us. The woman setting it up argued with me about how the tables should be set up and I just thought it should've been done already. It was a Wednesday night they should've been honored to have that much business.
For a 7 o'clock reservation, we finally ordered around 7:30, and around 8:20 I asked the waitress (very nicely) if the food was almost ready. She said that it has not been that long, to which I responded it's been almost an hour. She started arguing with me about the time she put in the order. Any customer service employee would know not to argue with the customer, but to simply apologize. It was embarrassing and unprofessional.
When the food came out it was just OK. The presentation was nothing special.
The owner is a complete ah* with zero customer service etiquette! Do not go here!
