We were in to celebrate two birthdays and our waiter, Steve, was very accommodating: he needed to inquire with the bartender and chef a number of times regarding offerings and ingredients. The Ahi and Salmon pokes were delicate and flavorful, the Zen Omikase was tasty and well-suited for a group of four (we requested an additional portion be added so everyone had a serving of everything) and the Soba Noodle Sauté, Pork Ribs, and Bulgogi Tacos were thoroughly enjoyed. We appreciated the open feel of the space, and the mix of retro wire chairs and sculptural wood wall were a lively part of our dinner conversation. Unfortunately, they were out of two of the dishes we wanted - the Spicy Lump Crab Guacamole and Duck Maseca Pancakes, but we still ate well and shared nearly everything including a reasonably priced bottle of wine. Though we all enjoyed the side of thin sliced pickles, the Chicken Sate was dry and arrived sans peanut sauce - our waiter took it off the bill for us. Portions are rather small and pricing a little high, but the valet service is complimentary and in a 2-hr parking area, that makes a real difference for leisurely dining. Table maintenance was an issue at our small four-top, but Steve was otherwise attentive and friendly, and he graciously took care of our Birthday desserts and coffees. All in all, we enjoyed our celebratory evening and would return for nibbles/tapas, and a drink.
We have eaten at Zengo many times before and had a great experience but have not been there in over a year. We went to celebrate a family birthday.
They were extremely overwhelmed. It started with only one valet person. He was doing the best that he could running back and forth but when almost all of customers need to use this service due to lack of available parking, you need to have more than one valet parker.
We had reservations which they didn't seem to care about although we were seated promptly. However, we sat at our table for almost an hour without service. At the forty minute mark, my husband inquired and our waiter came over about ten minutes later to take our drink and food orders. We received our food before our drinks and some of our drinks were beers. The bartender could not make a drink. Two of the three that we originally ordered came out as other drinks because they were out of the main ingredient of the ordered drink so they just randomly substituted a drink. They were good about taking the drinks back as we did not want them and they did not charge us. The newly ordered drink was a gin and tonic that tasted terrible, how does that happen? We just paid for it. The food was good but they were out of several items that they didn't tell us about until after the order was in process and then the server can back for a different order. At the end, only sorbet and churros where available for dessert so we passed. The food was good but not as good as it has been in the past and other people had dishes that cooked at their table and the entire restaurant was being filled with smoke.
The entire night the lights were turned up really high so you felt like you were being interrogated. It was seriously bright, almost like after hours lighting for cleaning purposes. Our server tried his best but we will not return.
Worst Denver dining experience I've ever had on May 1 2017. We used to love Zengo, it was different and great food/service. We will never go again. They were out of Vodka (two types), and we got our wonton tuna tacos before any drinks ever arrived (server said bar was backed up - only about 6 people at bar). Tuna tacos were mostly white rice. No soy sauce on table, no sushi dipping bowls. No black cod available and it is one of only about 5 full entree size items on the menu. Sushi was inedible. Edamame was soaked in oil! Stir fry beef dish stone cold like it was made the day before. Tenderloin was well done shoe leather. Poor server was by himself and could not come close to keeping up. We bussed our own table and had to get soy sauce from other tables! Waygu beef at $13/oz with 3 oz minimum contained pieces that were pure fat (about $3/piece)! We complained to our server (he said he's heard it a lot lately) and to management. We were comp'd some of the food, but then they added $20 to the price of our bottle of wine! Server said he told them they overcharged on wine but maybe it was because our food was discounted. They did end up taking the $20 off but what shady business practice that was. We will never dine there again.
I'm beyond disappointed with what Zengo has become. I've been a loyal diner since 2013 and today was unacceptable. They took off their best tapas and added on sushi. It was similar to the sushi you get from king soopers, the fish was dyed and thinly sliced. They replaced the black cod with mahi-mahi and they did not have grey goose or belvedere. It was the worst dining experience I've had in years. We had to send a dish back because it was cold and we had to bus our own dishes and put them on the table next to us. I will never be back.
It was a quiet night at Zengo when 4 of us went for a meal. The menu is interesting - with a mix of small plates for sharing. We like the location - easy to get to from the light rail or by car.
This was the first time I have been back to Zengo in a couple of years- food was great and the service was good but I do miss the brussel sprouts~
If you go by other reviews, you might think that Zengo has really gone down hill in the last year, or since changing things up a bit. I would argue that this is not the case. We visited Zengo previously about 15 months ago and then last Friday. I was not terribly impressed with our earlier visit. This time, however, we went on Friday during Happy Hour so we could try a couple of drinks and an appetizer before dinner. We took a couple of seats in the bar area. Since they do not have any beer on tap (bottles only) I decided to try one of the $5 cocktails, the Whiski Wash. I enjoyed it and my wife liked the vodka/basil drink named the Brahma. The Chicken Karaage is chicken thigh meat served with a Korean chili sauce and was quite good. Since our service was good we saw no reason to move to the dining room and ordered our dinner in the bar area. We had the New Volcano Roll to start. I ordered the Squash Curry (which turned out to be pumpkin), and my wife got a spicy prawn dish of which I don't recall the name. Everything was very tasty, but if you shy away from spiciness with some heat, you may want to avoid Zengo. Both dishes were spicy in their own right, but not so much that it took anything away from the flavor of the underlying food. I really enjoyed the curry and could still taste the pumpkin. The spicy heat to the prawn dish is one that your mouth won't soon forget and stretched my palate a bit, but I would order it again if in the mood for such. The portions were good (we took home part of the prawn dish), so we didn't have dessert. In any case, the service, food and ambiance were all to our liking and we recommend giving Zengo another try.
We have been to Zengo's many times. This was our 1st time since their remodeled and the service was less than desirable. It seemed as if our waiter was on a self inflicted high. Yes, high off of something and we were dining with our 10 year old who was very uncomfortable with the twitching and erratic movement of the our waiter. As we were asking questions about the new menu he couldn't keep still and was consistently touching his nose and mouth and shaking. He had multiple band-aids on five of his fingertips that were dirty and it was just sad to experience this with our 10 year old. I excused myself and found someone to assist us in changing our waiter. I didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable either and they sent someone over to assist. As the night continued he did come over a couple of times to make sure we were all right and seemed to be coming down off his high.
Also, the bathroom wasn't clean and the toilet seat in one of the stalls was detached and just propped on the back of the toilet.
This experience is not what you would expect from Richard Sandoval brand and we were very disappointed and will not be going back to Zengos.
Our first visit since the remodel. Although I like the larger tables, with more space in between tables, I liked the old, more colorful décor better. I also miss the larger menu, though everything we tried was exceptional, as before.
Great food, server was attentative, and automosphere was on point.
Michael M. was amazing!!! Knew just what we wanted and kept the food coming, even with our dietary restrictions. Will be back.
Yummy, creative dishes and great wait staff. Perfect for a date or a group.
Food was really great. Service was pretty terrible. Waitress seemed either new or just a space case, everything took forever. She had to ask multiple times what kind of drink I wanted because it seemed she kept forgetting. Water glasses sat empty most of the night because she didn't notice and when we asked, it took 20 or more minutes for her to come back with a pitcher. As a restaurant manager in the area I try to be understanding of any situation but there was literally nothing going on in the restaurant. Would've been nice to have anyone acknowledge my moms birthday (as I mentioned in the reservation notes). Overall pretty disappointing experience, likely won't be back.
Friendly staff. Unique drinks and appetizers. Good happy hour
We had really bad service. I don't think we had a server assigned to us and then when someone finally helped us he didn't write anything down and we got random parts of our order throughout the night. It was frustrating for my group and it was a going away party so the bad service distracted from the event. I waited tables in college and if you have a larger group write things down you will forget. I would not recommend based on my experience. Also happy hour is only at the bar FYI.
I used to love this place. I went there for the happy hour all the time, but since they've remodeled the happy hour menu has changed and doesn't have many options for food and the prices have increased. I was disappointed in our service when we were in the dining area as well. It really was awful. The server was doing the best she could, but clearly had way too many tables. I will not return to Zengo.
The drinks were amazing! Too bad they took caipirinha away.
Menu was changed recently. The service was severely lacking and I am very patient and easy going as I once was a server. We asked our waitress 3 times for water, she would fill one persons but not the other. Our appetizer came out the same time as our dinner and it wasn't fast by any means. This place use to be one of my favorite spots but not so much anymore.
Everything had spice in the items, even those not listed as spicy. The restaurants website says kid friendly which is why we chose to go here after a day at the Muesum. The noise level is good for kids b/c the music is loud but nothing oncthe menu was geared for kids. We had the empanadas from the recommendation of the waiter. He was surprised when a dish of noodles and chicken was crazy spicy.
Was great.start to finish.will go back.Ask for Danielle. She is a remarkable server.Great attitude.Compliments to the chef also. Thanks to all involved.
We were seated next to a table where the patrons were high -- not from alcohol. My friend commented that this was a particular problem in Denver.
Great food, great service!! We had a spectacular meal and if you go ORDER THE JAPANESE IPA!!! Soooo good
Most importantly, why was there multiple pieces of wood in the xo edamame? Waitress was horrible (I feel bad for saying this but...) she didn't seem like she liked being a waitress at all. My water was empty more than half of the time in their. It doesn't help that they have kid sized cups. XO edamame was good but I felt sick from all the salt in it and not sure how much wood we ended up ingesting. We found around 10 pieces. The pork dumpling ($8) came with 4 tiny round dumplings. The salmon poke was almost inedible due to the fact that it was incredibly sour and citrusy and burned my mouth with every bite. I am in no way sensitive to food. We ordered soups an appitizer but it didn't come. After our main dishes were served a spoon was brought. After we finished our main dishes we figured the soup wasn't coming so we asked for it to be canceled and was given a rude look from the waitress and a snoody ok. We won't return.
Food was great. Our waitress acted like it was an inconvenience to serve us and that we were bothering her. Way to ruin our date night out. Perhaps she should find a different line of work. We did tell the manager we weren't impressed with out waitress.
Not my typical experience at Zengo. Service was not great, dining room music alone was very loud, food was mediocre and some dishes were cold when brought out. The hike in price for brunch since my last visit made it even less appealing. I'll think really hard before going back.
Worst restaurant I've been to in Denver. Service was abysmal.
Service was excellent. We did the buttonless brunch and ordered a lot of small plates. Our server made great recommendations and even brought us out things that she thought that we would like, and, we did. Even though we were sitting outside they always kept an te on us refilling our drinks and always making sure that we had food. I have dined here a lot with people over the last few years and always have a good experience.
We love Zengo and their food and have been there several times. We were disappointed this time that the bar was very slow (even though we were there on the early end, before a show), and there was some miscommunication between our server and the kitchen, which led to us not getting all of the food we ordered, and us almost having to leave before some of it came out. We should have had enough time to eat our meal (we gave ourselves 2 hours before our show), but whatever happened caused us to be rushed at the end.
I will add that Zengo made it right and comped the portion of the meal that was rushed, which was good, but I think the problem was avoidable given that the restaurant was only half-full.
Overall, still a great place to which I'd return, but I recommend avoiding if you have anywhere to be afterward, even if you (think that you) have plenty of time. Let Zengo be your main event of the evening, and not your first stop, and you'll have a great time.
Came for a Birthday brunch, used the available "valet parking". Valet driver parked my car in a ticket zone, I subsequently received a ticket, valet driver snatched the ticket and promised to pay it. Returned to the restaurant to speak to somebody to ensure that the ticket would get paid. Met a very nice manager who told me that everything would be taken of. It took me three weeks and multiple phone calls and messages to the valet company and the restaurant to finally get somebody to finally take care of the ticket. Once about valet company was made aware of the situation they took care of it promptly but I spoke to the manager more than once at Zango and he acted like he had no idea and had no responsibility for the issue.
First time visit- the menu was eclectic but the waiter provided us guidance through it and we had a delicious sampling of numerous items. Great brunch. Great Bloody Mary bar! Very friendly staff and comfortable atmosphere.
Great place! Creative menu and amazing service. Worth the price for the experience!
I'm surprised at how much sugar was added to different sauces--a little too sweet for my tastes. Yes, asian food will use some sugar, but we also have savory flavors as well. Don't be afraid of the vinegary flavors found in asian cuisines.
Lastly, the duck pancake was bizarre. It was a little soggy under all the sweet sauce and impossible to pick up with the chopsticks.
I think the chefs need to take a hard look at the menu and flavors because it feels like a major identity crisis.
The hosting staff were nice and courteous, and we were seating quite quickly. There seemed to be some initial confusion about my wanting the "Bottomless Food" with only one bloody mary "a la carte". Regardless, we received our vodka in quick order and proceeded to make our drinks. My friend and I ordered two brunch plates to start out.
When the food arrived, my friend received his order but I didn't receive mine. We were asked whether we needed anything else. I replied we still needed one more plate - obviously without one in front of me - and there was more confusion. I decided to order an additional dish and so did my friend. His additional dish came out, but I still had not received my first order. All the while, I was asked repeatedly if I wanted another bloody mary. Although I normally appreciate the punctual drink service, I was not well set up to enjoy more drinks when I have been without food for 50 minutes or more. Finally, my first dish arrived, then my second dish after we had closed out the tab and were preparing to leave. The second dish was "cured salmon rice cake benedict", but there was obviously no salmon on this dish so it was merely egg and rice cake with hollandaise. My friend corroborated this fact. This was not what I would have had in mind after paying $42 for brunch. In my experience, there are places with better food (benedicts and omelets literally teeming with salmon), drinks, and service for easily half the cost.
Zengo is my favorite spot for brunch. I took out of towners because of how amazing it always is. Unfortunately this time, we received 2 dishes within an hour+ of being there, and our bottomless drinks weren't flowing as often as they usually do. I did speak to the manager, he made sure our service picked up which was great and what I expect from a place like Zengo. I was a little disappointed that nothing was comped or discounted from our bill, but overall the food is always amazing and the manager did fix the main issue
Fantastic as usual. Groupon created quite a treat for us!! We'll be back!!
sushi's quality wasn't good. price wasn't bad. Ok restaurant.
Great food & ambiance! A real treat.
