This was one of the most mediocre meals I have ever had. Food arrived cold, waitstaff ignored our table, cocktails didn't taste like anything and the food was just plain uninteresting. I don't know why anyone would waste money on this overpriced and boring restaurant.
This restaurant is now permanently closed. I booked a reservation for that final day without knowing. They didn't send me any email prior to the reservation or tell me when I checked in that they were closing. They ran out of food and we didn't get nearly enough to eat. Sad to hear they closed, but common courtesy should be given to those who are going to dine in your establishment
I was very disappointed with my experience at Zengo. I made reservations to take my fiancee for a a belated Valentines day and the experience was horrible. We got there at 11:45am for all you can eat brunch and the waiter told us that we could only order once because they were so busy. We were also told that about one quarter of the items on the "all you can eat" brunch menu were no longer available. So, we ordered our drinks and our food and our waiter forgot half of our order! He was very unhelpful and just made us feel like we were bothering him. He hardly waited on us, brought us "unlimited" drinks twice, which were incredibly watered down and old. We tried to find our waiter to explain that half of our order was missing, but it was clear that he just wanted us out of there, so we got our check and left. I've been to Zengo before and other Richard Zandoval restaurants had such a wonderful experience and the food was excellent, that's why I brought my fiancee here. But the experience was so bad I was simple embarrassed by the horrible service and that we didn't even get all the things we ordered. It was the worst brunch experience I've had in DC. Period. I'm never going back here again and will warn m y friends about it.
Our server was extremely inattentive, not refilling water, forgetting to bring a side dish, and ignoring our table once all the food was eaten for about 30-40 minutes before we finally just asked for the check instead of getting dessert like we originally intended to.
Probably won't go back for a special occasion anytime soon.
Food was an interesting mix of Asian and Latin cuisine. Nice presentations. Portions are akin to small plates, so you might want to order a bit more than you'd expect. Service was lackluster. Our waitress was working very hard with many tables, while bussers were scarce. Our waitress was doing bussing also. It took a very long time to get the check at the end.
This is one of my and my girlfriend's favorite places to go for dates, so when we saw they had an opening on Valentine's Day, we were excited to book it. Unfortunately, the experience we had this time was shockingly bad and unlike any of our typically-great previous visits to zengo. Service was insanely slow- even to the point where it it would take over thirty minutes after we'd cleaned our plates for the bus staff to even ask if they could take anything. Two separate rounds of drinks had to be ordered twice, as they were forgotten about the first time. And all this despite the fact that there were a surprising amount of open tables for it being a holiday. The receipt was dropped off at our table without even asking if we were ready for it- and we were given the wrong receipt not once but twice! There seemed to be an overall lack of attention to detail- Desert- ice cream and sorbet, was brought to us without spoons. The sink in one of the men's bathroom stalls had no hand soap whatsoever. Several ceiling lights were either burnt out or completely missing a bulb. Like I said, this is one of our favorite places to go, so I hope it was just an off night. Also- I know it was the first night on the menu, so the kinks are probably still getting worked out, but the new pork belly dish was very dry.
This was my second brunch at Zengo. My first visit on May 3, 2015 was amazing. This last visit left me less impressed. It was extremely crowded and so the staff appeared to be in an extreme rush to get through service. It took us over 15 minutes from being seated to even get attention from the staff. A few of the plates ordered were never delivered.
The food itself was tasty and a good variety to choose from. I would go again but perhaps towards the earlier part of the brunch service.
We ate a late brunch at Zengo. We were seated shortly after the time of our reservation, but waited 30 minutes before we received our first drink. They were out of several things on the menu, including one of the brunch beverages. Everything that we ate was delicious and the atmosphere was great, but the service completely took away from the experience of the meal. Plates were slow to come out, inconsistent in timing, and we didn't receive two items that we ordered. Again, the food was great, but there are other places in the city to spend $40 on brunch or lunch.
Restaurant was busy for a 8pm dinner on a Saturday and difficult to hear a conversation across the table. Was there for restaurant week and my main course was forgotten; difficult to track down waiter to bring this to his attention. Took longer than usual to get drinks. Didn't appear to be enough staff for the busy night. Manager did come around to most of the tables to check on patrons. Food was very good regardless of the service.
Had a great time at Zengo for a dinner date with my lady! It was restaurant week so we got a great deal on appetizers, entrees and a dessert. They sat us by the window so the people watching downtown/near Chinatown was awesome. Low light and a relaxed but refined atmosphere added a romantic touch that we enjoyed. Will definitely be back!
I've been to Zengo before and returned for the good food and restaurant week experience. I was quite disappointed in this visit. Initially the waitress that "greeted" my party of three for lunch didn't actually say anything to us. She just stared until I told her what we there for and although I mentioned we were there for restaurant week, she failed to provide the special menu or any instructions on how this experience would be different from regular service.
Additionally our actual server paid little attention to what my party was saying/ordering. Specific requests, like no egg in my fried rice, and actual orders placed, like the Bulgogi Cheese steak with fries vs the Bulgogi Poblano Bowl, were ignored or passed over. Two dishes we ordered had to be redone increasing the time of our lunch.
The piece de resistance was when the check was delivered the server actually opened the bill, quoted the total, then stood at the table, bill in hand, awaiting our payment method! I have never had an experience like this before and felt very offended. While it took 12-15 minutes after our dessert was delivered for the server to return for containers and the bill, he could not wait for us to pack up our food (which is customary for the server to assist with at this establishment however we received no such service) and get our payment together.
When I discussed my discomfort and concerns with the manager, I was cutoff mid-sentence a number of times and felt as if my concerns were not taken seriously. I was told follow-up would occur but still have not heard anything.
Based on the appalling service from beginning to end, from the greeter to the manager, I cannot help but consider our race/gender (3 young Black women) as a factor in this experience and wonder if it is the sentiment of the restaurant across the board.
I am very disappointed with this experience. Despite the delicious cuisine I am not likely to return to Zengo, nor recommend it to friends or family.
We have been coming to Zengo since we relocated to DC from Chicago 3 years ago. The food was always delicious and staff wonderful. Our experience the last few times have been below average. Our waiters have been not attentive which ruined the experience. Needless to say, what was once a favorite place for dinner or brunch will now be by passed and not recommended any longer to friends.
Food was amazing, service not so much. Our waiter was nowhere to be seen after taking our orders, and he ended up forgetting to put our orders in. We ended up waiting for 45 minutes until we flagged him down to ask where our food was. He gave a very vague explanation about what happened and didn't apologize for our late food. My entree arrived first, and my boyfriend's entree arrived 10 minutes after, which was quite frustrating. Despite the terrible service, the food was hot, fresh, and delicious. I really do hope the service was a fluke because I'd recommend this restaurant based off the food alone!
Had fun here for brunch with friends. Bottomless brunch drinks were great. Bottomless food delivery was a little clunky (some orders coming late or not at all); and I wish there were more simple, healthy options. The waitress was nice. When we arrived at the restaurant, there was a huge line to check in and no hostess in sight for close to 10 minutes; but we were still checked-in 4 minutes early for our 1:15 reservation. Fun place, very busy and full of drunk brunchers.
The food was good but the service staff seemed inexperienced. I waited a long time between drinks, and the staff kept mixing up our drink orders. One server couldn't tell the difference between a martini and a mixed drink and claimed that the martini was the cocktail and that the cocktail was a martini. The food was very good and creative though.
We needed a place to eat after the Women's March, and thanks to Open Table found a table at Zengo. The food was great, our only problem was that our waiter was more focused on getting us our drinks then on taking our food order, and we were hungry! Luckily we were able to catch the host's eye, and he took our order. The food was excellent!
Went for the bottomless brunch with friends, and had a nice experience. The service could have been a bit better - our food didn't come out for an hour, they were a slow to refill our drinks, and our waitress forgot some of our orders, but they might have been under-staffed for the day.
Otherwise, the food and ambiance were great!
