Zeal Ratings and Reviews
Late Christmas lunch gathering at Zeal was a good choice. My girlfriends and I decided to do our holiday lunch at Zeal and we really enjoyed the entire experience. The gluten free Zucchini fries were my favorite and I am glad they have a nice boutique wine list with quite a few Oregon options as well. We will be back for Wine Down Wednesday and Live music. Our server Brent was very nice and attentive and the owner came by and explained all their gluten free options and recommended what each one of us should try. Beautiful decor and music selection.
We like zeal and my husband and I always go back for the Halibut and Steak Burger. Our family (kids) have lots of dietary restraints, from dairy, nut and garlic allergies. Scott, Jake, and Kristian (chef) always ensure that there are no issues or cross contaminations. We always feel welcomed and treated like family. Def our weekly go to place in East Cobb.
I’ve been to this restaurant several times and it’s been steadily declining over the years. Food was always a bit pricey, but it used to be worth it. Now it’s mediocre at best and therefore very overpriced for what you get - lukewarm, tasteless soup; dry, burnt burgers not served as ordered; spinach salad with little else in the bowl except the greens, etc. Plus, the lighting is atrocious. There are no shades on the large windows and at lunch time on a sunny day you are almost literally blinded by the light reflecting off the parked cars. My friend wore her sunglasses throughout the meal. Not a pleasant experience overall!
This was my first time at Zeal. I went for lunch and the food was good. However, there was only 1 other party there and the service was awful! We were there for 1 1/2 hours! Don’t know what took the food so long to come out, but I am glad that I didn’t have to go back to work. I ordered the lunch grilled chicken sandwich and it was good. Nothing to brag about. Maybe with it being the holiday season, they were short help, but still with a total of 2 parties (total of 7 people—3 in my party and 4 in the other), they should have been faster with their service.
Five of us girls who get together for birthdays decided to try Zeal. We were very happy with our decision. Most of us ordered the grilled cheese with caramelized onion and pepper with the homemade basil tomato soup. The sandwich was delicious, on sour dough bread! Our waiter had quite the personality and was also a comic! Thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
This is my third time at zeal and my first time at brunch and was pleasantly surprised how delicious my meal was. I always look at the menu and think it’s one thing but when I get it it’s something else and so delicious. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Just a great atmosphere where you can actually hear the party you are with and not everyone else.
This was only our 3rd time at Zeal and it was a great experience. We tried their whole fish special which was the bronzini and the new fall salmon dish. Wine list is nice and boutique. I like their bourbon collection and it is probably the best outside the perimeter. Go try the George T. Stagg, they have 2 bottles.
We love Zeal. It is such a friendly and cozy environment. Scott makes us feel at home. We know Scott from 2 years ago and this was an important week for him with the wedding, but considering we made a reservation he still came by to make sure we had a good experience. Service was top notch and the new fall/winter menu was really nice as well. Be back next week!
It was not a pleasant experience. It took 40 minutes to get our food. We were the only ones in the restaurant. Our food came out over cooked and dried out. The French fries were not fully cooked. The waitress and manager argued with us when we told them the food was over cooked and took too long to get something else. Not good at all.
Server was obviously new and struggled to open a bottle of wine. Fortunately a manager appeared and opened the wine. Brought out our entrees before our salad. Took the entrees back, kept them warm, and then brought out the salad we were sharing. My pork chop was dry and a bit over done.
Have been to Zeal many times and generally had a good experience. This was not one of them..
The food was not as good as last time we were at Zeal and it seemed not as fresh as during the weekend. The waitress didn't understand the allergy substitution I needed, but one of the managers came to the table and knew exactly what I was requested. We'll go back to Zeal again, but probably on the weekend.
The food was really good. I had a chicken dish (special of the day); and my father had traditional grilled cheese and tomato soup. The bread was unique and very fresh, light, and tasted great.
The only downside - the lunch crowd was very light... such a great local restaurant and not a big lunch crowd is a shame. Hopefully they are packed for diner and other times of the day!
We went to Zeal for lunch. It was a birthday lunch and our friend is a celiac. We loved all the options available, as the menu was 90% gluten free. Short rib grilled cheese was my favorite and our gluten free friend had a couple gluten free starters. Overall a nice experience, very industrial and modern look. We will be back for dinner.
big fan of Zeal, I have been coming here for 4 years now. we went last Wednesday for ladies night out and Wine down Wednesday. It was very busy and the service started a little slow but our server Celia eventually caught up and did a great job. Glad the live music is no longer there, we can actually hear each other and this place is very nice and the live music ruins the ambiance. We will be back for their Beer Dinner next Thursday the 5th!
Too many obviously bad things for a restaurant at this price point. The interior is adorable, and the service was good. My friend ordered a glass of cava that was flat. I'm guessing it was the bottom of the bottle, as they offered us a different bottle of bubbles at the reduced price of $22 in exchange. We ordered the mussels and they smelled so strongly of ammonia that the people at the other end of our six person table were commenting on them. We ordered several of the small plates as shared entrees, and our charcuterie board only came out when we asked them to remove the mussels. Half of the charcuterie board was jam, nuts, and what appeared to be craisins. The other half was thick dried hunks of meat, three pieces of cheese, and two rolls of salami. The best part was that they served it with saltines. I've never seen a board like that served with saltines. At that point, we laughed it off and didn't even bother to say anything.
Would not recommend.
Our waitress was delightful and tried her best but the kitchen was unable to do their part. The restaurant was not even half full but our party of 10 could not be properly served so there is a problem there. It was approximately 10-12 minutes between the time the first plate came out and the time the last plate came out. Even for dishes that were the same dish, they came out a way different times. Unfortunately we were sorry we chose this restaurant once we experienced this. Previously the only person from the group that has been had only been for lunch so we had no real data to go on. Wish it had been better.
First time dining at Zeal (used my $20 gift card from Open Table). Had salmon omelette, which was delicious. Also ordered a side of bacon, which was nothing special (was expecting thick smoke wood bacon or similar) and was burnt. Orange juice tasted like a sweet orange in a glass...freshly squeezed. Will be back again.
The service was exceptional. However, the food didn't live up to its billing. Normally, I would make at least two or three visits to a restaurant before offering a review; I want to be sure an experience isn't an anomaly. However, our evening here consisted of a wide range of samples from the menu, and my conclusion is solid. The menu reads wonderfully, but the food was sub-par. I'm envisioning a chef who watches too much Chopped on Food Network, but hasn't mastered sophisticated flavor combinations. The brisket spring rolls had virtually no flavor (and almost no brisket); the cheese/meat sampler would easily be bested by Boars Head; the hummus was oily; the hanger steak and scallops both were under seasoned and over cooked. I believe Zeal's attempt to compete with Seed is failing. After well over $100, I am disappointed and probably won't be back unless I see a "change in chef" banner out front by the traffic cones. To end on a positive, the service was exceptional all around, from the host stand to our waiter (Josh) to what we saw at the back of the house. The beer and wine selection was very nice as well.
My husbands meal was delicious. Mine was not. I ordered a steak and one end was so well done that I couldn't eat it and the other end was how I ordered it. The truffle Mac and cheese was not on point at all. I have had better in other restaurants. They chose to serve my steak on a cutting board and within 30 seconds of delivering to our table the juice from the cooking surface was running off of the board and on to my lap. I would definitely return though and give them another chance. The restaurant was packed on a very busy Friday night. The staff could have just been rushed.
We always have the best experience at Zeal and this evening was not an exception! The gracious, personable and knowledgeable GM, Sam, was his usual charming and engaging self and the food was superb. We tried a couple inspired cocktails and different wines that we had never tried before, and they were all delicious. These selections were all made at Sam's suggestion, and he has never steered us wrong. Go to Zeal, enjoy your entire evening and return week after week because it's just that good!
We had a great meal at Zeal. Server was very personable and attentive, knew the menu very well and we loved his suggestions. Substitutions were graciously made upon request. The food was a huge improvement over the last time we went. Restaurant was casual and unpretentious. We'll definitely be going back. Love that the East Cobb location is close to home.
