It just wasn't their night, last night. We were in the middle of our first round of drinks when suddenly, one of the glass globes from an overhanging light fell loose and came crashing to the table in front of my wife. The staff was on it in a heartbeat and moved us to a nearby table (there were 7 of us) which was uncomfortably close to the front door and it was a cold night. They then removed the remaining globes above that table, but not the ones where we were now sitting. As a small token of their goodwill, they didn't charge us for the drinks that had already been served since they had to be discarded due to the possibility of their containing glass shards (duh!) and they offered a complimentary dessert, but since we were on a tight schedule for a play, we were not able to take advantage of their offer.
If this wasn't enough excitement for the night, we then began to hear a high pitched noise that continued until we left. We were informed that the noise had something to do with their internet which was now down and their credit card machines weren't working. Some of us had antiquated pieces of paper called cash which they were able to use, but those of us who only carry plastic had to write down our credit card numbers and leave them with the manager.
On a positive note, the food and drinks were excellent.
As disappointing as the night was for us, we can only imagine what a nightmare it was for the staff. Kudos to our waitress who carried on admirably in the face of adversity. I don't know her name since I didn't catch it in all the excitement and I didn't get a receipt. I just hope she got the gratuities which we also had to pencil in on the bill.
The steaks were amazing!
Service and food was delicious and very timely served.
Our hostess was also working the bar. It took an hour to get our food. Food is great. Should never ask bar hostess to also wait a table.
Needed last minute reservations for a party of 8. Wanted to try something new and nicer for a birthday celebration. Didn't realize this restaurant and quaint little street were tucked away in Opelika. Food was great (highly recommend the chicken and waffles) and the ambience was unique. Can't wait to go back and try their other dishes!
We dined here for brunch on a Sunday morning. The food was excellent and a great value for the price. I would recommend this as a brunch spot!
Host staff was accommodating when we were running late, and held our table.
Service was terrific and our server even shared what his favorites were and commented on how good the home made bacon was. He was super helpful and outgoing.
All of our meals for brunch were done perfectly.
We love it here!
This is our go-to place when we have out of town guests. The three of us had the salmon, blackened red fish, and the sweet tea fried chicken. All was delicious. Our guest had the salmon and I was surprised that he didn’t lick his plate. Phillip was our server and was very friendly and efficient. We always enjoy our times at Zazu and will most likely be back later this week with another guest.
I travel and dine all over the world. The light level was the darkest I’ve ever experienced. I believe the purpose was to hide the quality of the food. I’m extremely happy this was a personal meal so I didn’t have to apologize to clients.
Ingredients are very fresh, mostly local and handled properly. Bravo!
Always love Zazu! The scallops are great!
One of our favorite spots! Never lets us down.
Sat outside and had a wonderful experience. Had the Nova Scotia halibut (4 of us ordered it)- an outstanding dish!
Loved every minute of it!
Best first visit. Loved the food! I would recommend it to anyone.
Food was amazing. Would recommend the Firecracker shrimp as an appetizer. The burger was awesome and the pork loin was amazing!
Gem in Opelika!!! The food was great! Farm to table concept. Not overpriced.
Perfect night for outside seating. Amazing food and ask for Tatum for great service.
Swanky dining in downtown Opelika. The food is always amazing and the menu changes with the seasons. Nothing is overdone or over seasoned. You can taste all of the separate flavors in each dish! Excellent wine list. Must try the poutine and the bread pudding!
Sat at bar for drinks... boiled peanuts were great
I’ve been here a few times and it’s usually fine. This time the service was good- but the food was horrible. The shrimp smelled bad and the burger had a strange after taste. We will not be dining here again.
My wife and I had a great experience here. We had a reservation for dinner during a busy Auburn football weekend. The place was packed, but they sat us at right on time.
I think most every seat is a good one, but we lucked out and had a table on the second floor near the bar. Our waitress, Brooke, was also the bartender. She was fantastic.
We started with the burrata caprese salad. Amazing. Really, really great. We also had to try the firecracker shrimp w/ okra. I almost ordered it again for my meal!! Wow.
For dinner, I had the gulf-coast catch of the day - blackened RedFish — with grits and roasted brussels sprouts. Outrageously good. My wife had the Bistro steak, mashed potatoes and asparagus. The steak wasn’t great quality, but in fairness, they tried to tell us the hangar steak would be better. The flavor was really, really good, though.
The atmosphere was really cool. The service was top notch. And the food was excellent. I highly recommend this place!
Duck fat fries are amazing! The new salmon dish is wonderful. Always a pleasure to eat and drink at Zazu!
We always enjoy dining at Zazu’s! This was our first time having brunch and the menu was varied and the food was excellent. We plan to go back for brunch again soon!
Great food, great personnel, great service. Great location for any occasion.
This was our first time to Zazu's. We drove over from Auburn and it was worth it. We all loved it. The hush puppies for an appetizer were great! We also enjoyed the Mahi Mahi with grits and the Steak and Eggs. We will definitely be back.
Thomas our server was outstanding. Great atmosphere was great. The poutine was a surprise on the menu and a great appetizer.
awesome as always
Food is very good! Came from out of town and enjoyed the meal so much on Saturday, we invited more friends and came back for Sunday Brunch. The service was good and the ambiance is great. It's in a 130+ year old building; very cool vibe, great bar, and has 5 split levels including an outside balcony to dine on. Would highly recommend when dining in the Auburn/Opelika area.
Kimberly, our server, was amazing. We were a table of 10 and never wanted for anything. She was attentive, friendly and extremely hard working. 5 stars to Kimberly!!!
Fun dining experience in a neat town! Food was good and atmosphere great!
Sarah was a great asset to our experience at Zazu! She was attentive but not intrusive on our time together. Thank you for your unique menu and including a menu item with very few carbs for me trying to eat healthier. May I suggest you add another item that would also meet this criteria or options available to vary current menu items. Thank you for such a special place in our little Railroad town. We enjoyed dining before the Friday night crowd arrived and the noise level is significantly greater(as experienced the previous Friday, Sept 6th). Blessings!!!
Very good food and an interesting list of beers on tap.
Packed house on gameday weekend! Food and service were great! Will definitely visit again.
I always enjoy my time spent at Zazu’s. The atmosphere is pleasant. The service is excellent and there is never a disappointment.
The food was very disappointing for the price! I love the location and the atmosphere... way over priced
always wonderful....my favorite in Lee County
My favorite place to dine in Opelika. I recommend it
We had never been before and went to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The scallops were very tender and tasty. We also enjoyed the boiled peanuts. They were a cool substitute for a basket of bread. The flat iron steak was a little tough, though, but the mashed potatoes were delicious. Our only real complaint was that we had to ask for cokes instead of ice water because the water tasted bad. Our server was sweet and helpful and fixed us right up. Overall, it was a nice dining experience.
