What Insiders Are Saying
Another Jose Andres spot with solid tapas. Head to Zaytinya for a power lunch that doesn’t feel like a power lunch.
It was the right amount of noise and service level for a date
Wonderful dinner. Lots of options for a group with different tastes!
The food was interesting and tasteful. The specialty cocktails were not my favorite. The noise level in the restaurant was horrible. We had to practically yell to hear each other.
Terrific service and as always, the food was delicious. We especially enjoyed the watermelon salad, zucchini fritters and mushroom couscous. Zaytinya is always a great option.
The food was excellent as always. Service was not great this visit. All of our food came out at once and we were never asked if we wanted another round of drinks. Our server was ok just not the usual level of service we normally receive here.
I called ahead to make sure the restaurant could handle a birthday dinner for my wife if our daughter would be showing up as a surprise from NYC, a half-hour later than Mom & Dad. The staff wasn't at all fazed by the request; they knew exactly how to handle. They made EVERYTHING work smoothly, and Mom was totally surprised. Our server, Rachael, was extremely attentive and full of good info about menu selections and wines, despite covering lots of other tables at the same time. And the food (the main reason for choosing Zaytinya) was delicious as always. Dad had Kibbeh, Peynirli Pide (a Turkish flatbread) and Tabbouleh. Mom ordered Dolmades, Piyaz (giant beans with kale and tomatoes), and Greek Fries. When our daughter showed up, we added a plate of delectable scallops and an order of Keftedes Kapama. Each dish showed a loving attention to fine-tuned, graceful flavors — the tabbouleh was not overstuffed with bulgur, so the parsley, lemon, and onion really burst forth on the tip of the tongue. The labneh had just the right harmony of sweetness and tartness, to complement the lamb and beef in the kibbeh. And the ice cream — is made by Zaytinya itself! These folks made my wife feel VERY special on her birthday, and as a result the whole family had a memorable evening. And considering the quality of the food, service, and overall experience, the check was far less than what I would have expected.
Had the Chef’s tasting menu and unexpectedly fell in love with the Brussels sprouts. A fantastic culinary tour of the menu.
This is one of my favorite DC restaurants--the food is AMAZING. It seems louder every time I visit though, and the service can be a little scattered due to the crowds. Was difficult to have any business conversation, but I HIGHLY recommend it for an energetic group or just to someone who wants to try perfect food in an energetic atmosphere.
The food and drinks are wonderful, but Zaytinya is one of the loudest restaurants I've ever experienced. My family and I had to yell to each other to be heard.
Great food and energetic atmosphere. Possibly some cross contamination of the walnuts with some other nuts(?) in their dishes. Celebrated my daughter’s 21st birthday there and she ended up with a severe food allergy right after the meal. She is not allergic to walnuts and our dishes were specially picked to avoid cashews, pistachios and pine nuts. But somehow, after drinking the Persian cool cucumber soup, she had an immediate onset of food allergy symptoms that escalated quickly to face swelling, hives, etc.
Another great meal ay Zaytinya! Excellent service.
Service was spotty and we were seated next to kitchen entrance so not great food was as always very good
Waitress was nice but didn’t get our order for the first 45 minutes. Then she forgot to put in our order. Food came late.
We had oysters and the cold bar (lobster, clams & jumbo shrimp) - all was delicious and their choice of oysters great! The place was packed, crowded and noisy - tables for two too small and close together. But would return for the seafood.
The food is consistently tasty and our service started out strong. Our server made really good recommendations for our meal.
However, my dessert was brought to me after my first appetizer. Also, there were pistachio shells in my pilaf - and those shells were quite sharp! My server took the comment about the shells, but never provided a response.
One of my favorite restaurants, but this was easily the least of any of my dozen-or-so visits. Maybe it was because it was late-ish on a Sunday? Service was very uneven, with long gaps between courses. When the final course finally arrived (lamb chops) they were overlooked and no longer warm. The crispy eggplant was, likewise, not so crispy or special.
I’ll go back but it’ll be when the place is more “hopping.” I expect it will be better.
We went to the restaurant to celebrate my kids 21 st birthdays -- food was great as was the service.. main negatives were- restaurant was very noisy in spite of the fact that we had a round table in the corner.. also i wasn't pleased that we were charged a fee for each cupcake that we brought for dessert.. There were no suitable items on their dessert menu for a birthday which was ok but didn't feel great about that extra charge..
23rd Wedding Anniversary dinner before Shania Twain concert!!! Loved Zaytinya and will return!! Thank you sooo much!!!
One of the best in DC. Food is always very good and the service friendly and engaging. We had the chef's selection which is where they create the courses for you. Since this is a tapas/small plates restuarant, it is a great way to taste many of their specialty dishes and favorites. For $65 a person this was an awesome option. Great value as they give you dish after dish. I highly recommend this option but be prepared to eat. Wine pairing with the flights is also a good way to go.
Had a great experience, food was fabulous. Had the hummus, a few kabobs, watermelon salad, paired with a great red wine. Had a girls night and it was perfect.
I guess we expected a more elevated experience after all the hype - crowded and high energy made up for what may have been lacking in the food...drinks were expensive (then again, I WAS drinking Blanton’s, which having it at the bar was a plus right off the bat), food moderate, but really just overall “meh.” Plenty of interesting choices on the menu that sounded good, but in execution just lacked flavor. Thankfully (but lazily IMHO), the sauces had to carry the weight. And in some instances, as with the octopus and the eggplant, the sauce had to pretty much do all the heavy lifting. Some bright spots, the halloumi and squash blossoms...but generally speaking, I wish I had more to rave about!
Delicious food with a large variety of options. Waitress was very friendly but seemed rush. Overall, an excellent experience.
Bad service. Okay food. Our reservation was at 8:30 and we didn’t get a table until well after 8:45
My family of 5 (husband and 3 kids age 15, 17, 20) got the Chef's Experience. We've got one vegetarian and one committed carnivore in the group. Everyone was more than satisfied. The food was great and the server was very knowledgeable about the dishes and happy to answer all of our questions.
Friends in town. One of our go to spots. Service was very slow to start. Took 10 min to take our drink order. Then cold bread took too long to replace. But the server recovered a third of the way in. Food as always was outstanding. Try the two mushroom dishes - terrific! Scallops cooked perfectly. Finished off with the apricot and vanilla ice cream and the chocolate cake - amazing. Put this on your list!
The drinks were great and the food was awesome. Will definitely return!
Took my wife to Zaytinya for her birthday and this restaurant has delicious Mediterranean tapas! We loved the Lamp Kleftico, brussel sprouts, scallops, halumi cheese, and lamb/beef meatballs.. the lamb was outstanding!
We had a nice dinner - the food was good and the service was okay. We liked the menu options and the ambiance a lot.
Surprised at the worn out look of restrooms given how nice restaurant was
Time to renovate
Delicious food, friendly and efficient service. Don’t hesitate to try this restaurant.
I love the Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. The noise wasn’t too bad — we ate on the later side and it wasn’t as crowded.
I have been to Zaytinya a few times now and the food is fantastic, the wine is delicious and outside seating is great. Usually I have top notch service; however, this time it seemed as if they were a bit understaffed in the outside area. I only saw 2 servers and there was a large party table of about 15ppl that they had to serve as well. They had some miscommunication it seems between the bussers and the hostesses and people were being brought out to tables that hadn’t yet been fully set. Nonetheless, I would still return as this seemed to be an isolated incidence. Highly recommend this restaurant!
Muy ruidoso. Hay que hablar a los gritos. La comida muy buena. El mozo que nos atendió muy mal
Went here for my Birthday and it was fantastic. I love the food at Zaytinya. It’s always so delicious!
We went for our anniversary, on the recommendation of friends. We sat outside on the patio, and we loved the food, the feel, the drinks. Our waiter, JuVaughan, was so friendly and helpful. the only thing they could improve is the outdoor tables, there were several people noting that the tables wobble ( not due to the legs, but due to the attachment between the center post and the table surface - they need replacing or fixing).
Very creative and tasty dishes! We enjoyed the cocktails. I am vegetarian and appreciated all the options. Sometimes tapas can be challenging with a group but I was full by the end of the meal.
Sat on the patio. Great service. Lovely food.
I've eaten here several times and it has always been excellent. Today it was not. The chicken shawarma sandwich was not as good as it once was. The cooked green peppers were too strong. Service was terrible. We ordered hummus and had to ask 3 times for it. It finally came when after we practically finished our meal. They didn't ever bring the olive oil for dipping, never refilled our drinks.
The server did not do a very good job but after raising the issue with the manager, he took care of it.
We've had better experiences before.
Food was very good.
Food is decent, but not one dish made me want to come back for it another time. Most of the dishes seemed to be lacking that final touch of sauce or garnish. One lamb dish in particular (Adana Kebab) seemed naked and dry without harissa or tzatziki or somethinggg. There are plenty of other amazing Mediterranean restaurants in the DC area. I would recommend Kapnos, Cava, Maydan, or Ambar (the best! although it's technically Balkan) before this place. All have better food at better prices.
The service was TERRIBLE: 15 minutes seated before anyone came over to even give us pita and olive oil. Maybe that was just a fluke, but it was enough to leave a bad taste in our mouth. The thing they do really well though it the vibe, this place is large and beautiful, architecturally and from a design standpoint, and the crowd dresses to match. Would still be a great place for a date/special occasion because it is impressive, and the food is good, don't get me wrong, you just wont be "oohing and ahhing" over it.
