Virtually all of the food we tried was delicious (one salad was underwhelming) - but most of the dishes were creative, well priced for the size and used fresh ingredients. My biggest complaint is the service and ambience.
Ambience first: this is probably something the restaurant just can't help - vaulted ceilings, large windows, hard surfaces and the size make this a VERY noisy restaurant. And lots of large parties are seated among smaller parties - so if you don't have a problem yelling to be heard or with sudden outbursts of "happy birthday to you" you should do fine. I do, and it wasn't.

Service - lots of young inexperienced servers and front desk people = a mediocre experience. The front desk people don't offer to take coats and don't do a great job managing the "crowd" around the front desk waiting for tables. The servers likewise seemed inexperienced. There was no pacing - food arrived when it was prepared and so the table was soon crowded with dishes. All the food was delicious, but it's not a pleasant experience to have it dumped on your table all at once. Servers don't appear to control pacing and don't offer to pace delivery - all of which leads to a rushed feeling. And the wine list was a mystery to our server - though she at least offered to find out about a bottle she didn't know about - which was good.

Every time we visit DC we eat here. As always, the food was exceptional, the service was great, and the food came out very quickly. It was a bit noisy, but love love love this restaurant. We took friends for the first time. They loved it as well. Our special favorites included the octopus, the sirloin and lamb shank.

Since I love Turkish food, I really wanted to like Zaytinya (which means olive oil in Turkish), but a few of the dishes fell short. Service by Kevin was terrific, and the Brussel sprouts he suggested were fantastic, but the Ottoman pilav was dry, and several dishes were oversalted.

Zaytinya was the most universally recommended restaurant among our D.C. friends and family, so we made it for brunch just before leaving for the airport on our last day in town. The scallops (with apple and radish in a dill yogurt sauce) were one of the best small seafood dishes I've ever had, and the mam bayildi (roasted eggplant with walnuts, cherry tomatoes and pearl onions) was spiced perfectly. Mezze portions of the desserts were quite small, but great for brunch, especially with Turkish coffee (jasmine tea from Teaism was another strong choice). The decor was beautiful, although the tables were a little close together and we could clearly follow our neighbors' conversation. We were both very glad we'd been able to make time to visit Zaytinya, even just for a quick lunch.

Outstanding menu choices artfully presented...and delicious too! The crispy eggplant and the chicken Taouk deserve special mention. This was my fifth time at Zaytinya and I look forward to many more moments with Jose Andres and his talented team!

Looking for delicious tapas in a gorgeous building and within a block of the metro? If yes, then Zaytinya is your spot. Don't miss the Imam Biyaldi, branzino, and the beet salad.

Quick note - while the servers are very nice and knowledgeable, service can be spotty. The red wine selection is underwhelming and most seemed to have turned in the bottle itself.
