Zasu is a dream a long time in the making for James Beard Award winning Chef Sue Zemanick. The name Zasu is derived from Zasa, which means “once again” in Slovak, inspired by Sue’s Slovak heritage and childhood memories of family bonding in the kitchen. Located in the New Orleans neighborhood of Mid-City, Zasu’s culinary goal is to explore new ways to inspire traditional favorites by allowing fresh ingredients to speak for themselves. Here, you will find a mix of local and non-native ingredients, creating a unique dining experience that is clean and light, yet rich in experience.

Appetizer was lump crab meat and braised cabbage, entree was wild mushroom perogies, coffee semifreddo for dessert. Everything was excellent. I could have gone for a larger dessert, but that’s just me.

The only problem with having a perfect meal, is that ones expectations become almost unrealistic. The BEST piece of fish that I have ever had - and that says a lot in this town!

Zasu was very accommodating in changing our reservation for the night I thought it was made for (my mistake!). James was our server and was very professional and efficient. Fish was cooked perfectly and scallops and pear salad were both wonderful. Lots of good flavors. A bit loud, and not as cozy as the former place, but will definitely recommend.

For all the love of everything PICK THIS RESTAURANT. Every single thing was perfect. It’s like your fairy Godmother made a menu just for you, except there were other people there eating too. We spent time studying the menu and then the waiter read the specials and switched the game up. The way everything was handled was just ... masterful. You know when you read a menu and you’re like “why are there so many things in this meal??? are all of them necessary?” YES. ALL OF THEM ARE NECESSARY. This meal was everything. Everything. And to be fair, it’s not like I’ve lived off rubber chicken dinners all my life. I have access to great food. This was just different. I will never not visit here whenever I visit this city!

I have been dreaming about returning to Zasu since my last visit to New Orleans. This experience was also exceptional, due to the combination of innovative cuisine and knowledgable, attentive service. My friend and I asked for a extended tasting, which covered most items on the focused, seasonal menu. Each course took us on a journey of different flavors, exploring classic French, and some Asian influences, while keeping with a local New Orleans feel. While everything was exceptional, I especially loved the grilled Octopus, Beef Carpaccio, Tempura Maitake mushrooms, lump crab and grilled cabbage salad, and the braised beef short ribs. The richly satisfying Wild Mushroom and Potato Perogies pay homage to Chef Sue Zemanick's Sovak heritage, and are not to be missed. Veteran Sommelier Chris Cuddihee has assembled a well curated wine list which perfectly complements the cuisine. I highly recommend this wonderful restaurant and look forward to returning as soon as possible.

Freezing cold—- half the people had coats on!!! Food excellent. Too long a wait(50 min) between finishing appetizers & drinks before main course arrived.

This was our first visit. The restaurant has a beautiful design and layout. We went on a Wednesday night and the restaurant was filled with people and a nice vibe. The service was professional, knowledgeable, and attentive.

My wife and I shared the spinach fettuccine appetizer. It was simply amazing. We loved it so much we were tempted to order another serving. For main courses we had the chicken dish and the beef short ribs . Both main courses were outstanding. We shared the chocolate cake with fig ice cream for dessert. We loved it. The wine list is diverse and filled with excellent selections, at good price levels.

We can hardly wait for our next visit.

Our party of four all enjoyed our dining experience at Zasu. The food was delicious, from the appetizers to the desserts. Johny, our server for the evening, professional, knowledgeable and friendly. The craft cocktails were outstanding. We definitely plan to return soon.

Initial contact with the restaurant - Molly: 5* I made a reservation for 8:30pm for a Saturday night, but was having issues finding a babysitter to start that late [we were visiting from San Diego]. I left a message after I secured the 8:30, and received a call back from Molly an hour or so later. She quickly tried to juggle things and found us an earlier spot at 6:45pm, which I knew would be more manageable. So good start. We arrived and [as guests had already mentioned in previous reviews] the seating is tight for the tables for 2. Louis quickly greeted us after we were seated and offered water while we were perusing the wine list. We ordered our wine thereafter and then our appetizers and entrees. Service was top-notch. Upon ordering our 2nd, respective, glasses of wine, they were quickly delivered to our table by Chris - who was a joy to interact with. Clearly loves working there. After dinner we each ordered dessert and mine [pistachio pavlova] OMG, unbelievable flavor. My husband ordered the chocolate cake, which was great, and the ice cream accompanying it, very tasty. Our appetizers and entrees were equally flavorful. I would be remiss in saying that Louis was not a great representative of the restaurant. He was genuinely interested in making it a memorable evening for us. A $200 dinner is not an every day thing for us, but we were prepared for it, and it was well-worth it. Well-run business, which we will definitely visit again next year for our annual trip to NOLA. Thanks all!

We had a terrific meal there with friends - the beef carpaccio and fish special were terrific. The service is attentive, friendly and helpful.
Conversation was a bit difficult but the ambiance is warm and welcoming. We plan on going back often.

The chef’s ability to serve various fish dishes is incredible. The flavors complement every bite. I had the black bass with risotto special. Can’t wait to return n hope it is once again served. Some seatings can be a little noisy however the booth seating for four is comfortable and more private.

Great food and service! I was impressed that the noise level was low, despite the large dinner crowd. I noticed acoustic panels on the walls and ceilings ( very well disguised). Impressive!! Very nice ambience and exceptional food and service.

We started with appetizers of scallops with a rice that was spectacular! perfectly prepared, perfect size and seasonings. The butternut squash soup with shrimp and pumpkin seeds was delicious as well. For entrees, we had the halibut served with a nutty seasoned crust and a beure blanc sauce - - licked the plate on that one. The short rib was so tender and mouthwatering that I had to trade some of my halibut so I could surf and turf....Fantastic, fresh ingredients that were perfectly melded together by the chefs.

Zasu is truly a fine dining experience in midcity and an absolute gem in Nola. Chef Sue is such a master and puts together truly unforgettable dishes! We had an amazing date night and will definitely make this a must-stop on all future trips to New Orleans.

Great salad and best Halibut I've ever had. Perfectly prepared.
Re service, I don't want chatty but it was a bit impersonal and we had the sense they were trying to turn tables.
I would give 5 stars overall except for the one thing that made dining unenjoyable -- the noise. Tables on both side were literally shouting. The tight placement of tables doesn't help, and there are some sound panels on the walls but it is not nearly enough.
The tables need sound board underneath and I love the current zen-cool look, but I would rather see linen table cloths and maybe even some chic fabric at booth-fronts if that would help with the noise (and provide a tiny bit of intimacy).
The place seems to be super successful so maybe other diners don't care, but for me there are too many other superb restaurants in the city that allow for conversation and lingering over such a fine meal.
