Zafra Cuban Restaurant & Rum Bar Ratings and Reviews
The nachos were amazing, and I would definitely have them add the shredded pork for $5 extra. It was worth every cent. The ingredients were so fresh and so flavorful! The mojito is also superb and served garnished with fresh mint, lime slivers and a sprig of fresh sugar cane. The plantains were just the right temperature & texture & had amazing little crunchies on the edge - yummy!
It was very loud in there tonight. Tough to talk to your table mates. So, be prepared to scream. But, it is worth it for authentic Cuban cuisine.
First let me say we DO love Zafra's! It is a boutique in every sense of the word. We have been here multiple times and plan on many more trips. This time we shared an appetizer sampler (yes it was big enough for 2) and an avacado & mango salad (That was big enough for 4!). We then had camarones encilados and a ground beef dish - bothe were excellento! Cocktails are a little steep for a place like this but the overall tab still makes it a reasonable coules night out. Now, if only they could find a space that would allow an expanded kitchen to break out and do more creative work in a location that would provide ambiiance above a tavern level. This would undoubtably make them a star amonst New Haven destination restaurants.
Zafra Nachos are the greatest period. Get them with the pulled pork, and make sure you bring your appetite cause they are massive.. Dinner was good, too. He honest they could use some fresh herbs to make the flavors "pop" a little more. All in all a great experience.
We were in New Haven for a day and decided to see what popped up on Open Table as available for an early Saturday dinner (5pm). This is by far the best Cuban restaurant I've been to in terms of food quality. I ordered fish and it was cooked perfectly! The service was wonderful, super friendly. At the time we were there it was pretty empty and only every other table was taken. The place is small so I would assume it gets louder during the more conventionally busy times. It is a rum bar and their rum selection is quite extensive though given the early hour we didn't take advantage. Highly recommend this restaurant and we'll go back next time we're in New Haven.
If you are looking for authentic Cuban food and a great atmosphere, this is the place.
The owner takes great care in making sure everyone feels "at home" and the food is outstanding,
especially the Lechon Asado, their signature pork dish. The Pina Colada Martini was to die for so I'll definitely have that drink again.
We often choose Zafra for dining with friends or a special romantic occasion and will
look forward to more of the same in the future....
Cerveche outstanding. The sampler platter not so much-all fried and frankly bland. The specialty pork was tasty but the black beans were like none other I ever tasted. A subtle seasoning transformed the ordinary and predictable dish into a surprise. Staff were courteous and prompt and atmosphere was cozy and inviting.
Wife and I picked this place to celebrate Valentines Day. Place confirmed reservation at least twice which I appreciated. Arrived on time and table was ready. Server very helpful and friendly. Wife and I both had Mojitos to start and they were delicious. Had the Havana sampler, which did not disappoint. For main course, I had the rib eye and wife had the pulled pork. Both were outstanding as wife generously shared her dish with me. Had a chocolate cake filled with creamy chocolate for dessert. Then, I had a snifter of Zafra Rum: neat. It was neat and smooth. Ended the night with cuban coffee and cafe con leche. From the time we made the reservation to the moment we got into our car to go home, everything was simply perfect!!! We will definitely be back.
I went there for the Cubano sandwich I had seen in the movie "Chef." I was a little disappointed that it was cut so the pickle was only on one half of the sandwich, and I expected mustard and had to order some on the side for the second half of the sandwich. I ordered a special rum, which was excellent, and I was impressed by the amount served for only $7. I will return.
Been to Zafra several times. Always happy with the food. Large nacho platter is a dinner for two. Entrees seem like someone's Grandmother is back in the kitchen with a zillion years experience. Recently took six family members who can be picky. All of them came away very happy after finishing off two large platters of nachos, six entrees, and sharing two orders of tres leches cake. All spoke of being stuffed but also of feeling good about it.
We found this little spit while driving around on our way to a show. Its a small place so if you have a large party or definitely want to get a table, I recommend a reservation. The waiter was average, nothing bad but nothing that would stand out either as far as great service goes. we ordered our food and were a little shocked that it came out so fast. However, the food was excellent. Cuban flavors were there and and true Cuban recipes were used to prep the dishes we ate.what really ruined our experience was a couple that was seated behind us with a loud obnoxious girl who was coming on to her date nd was definitely not shy about expressing or showing it either. My guess he svored that night. that's something others do not need to know about and definitely not appropriate in a restaurant. thankfully we only had to endure that for about 10 minutes and then the last. overall I think it's a great spot to grab dinner and probably lunch I will definitely come back and try it again.
Tori was sweet enough to seat us at opening, as we arrived earlier than our reservation. The staff was still settling up and our patience was rewarded with outstanding service and flavorful food! Looking forward to visiting my nephew at Yale so we can taste more dishes at ZAFRA!!!!!
We went during restaurant week because I wanted to try Zafra. We were not permitted to order off the regular menu. Ok. I guess I should have known better since it's a rum bar. I simply wasn't blown away by the food. The salad wasn't fresh or crisp. The mahi mani was good but the toppings didn't meld - the salsa and vegetables weren't married well.
I finally had an opportunity to try Zafra on Saturday. We really enjoyed our meal. The rum selection was great and there was an extensive list of fun rum drinks. I enjoyed my mahi mahi and my husband really enjoyed his calamari appetizer. My one disappointment was the ceviche. It lacked flavor and fell flat on my palate. We will definitely go back and hopefully bring my son who loves Cuban food.
There was on the street parking at a meter, which was very convenient. Zafra is small but very attractively decorated with a very nice bar. All the waiters and bartender were very friendly and answered all our questions. The mojitos were excellent and so was the dinner. My husband had the ropa vieja and I had the fircasse de pollo which I would definitely order again. We will be going back to Zafra again soon.
My reservation time meant nothing. I waited over an hour for appetizers which came out with my meal; the order for 1 of the appetizers wasn't placed in time so it came out even later. The wait staff never checked on us and appeared to avoid us until the food came out. The food had good taste but my meat was cold. Very disappointed!!!!!
Great and interesting food, pleasant and attentive service. Pushed drinks a little, but it is a bar after all. My only objection is that almost all the seating is the high bar seat kind. As a tall person, I find this uncomforable. I would prefer a regular table and chairs.
The menu looked great. When I first walked in, I noticed a slightly musty smell but the place is all tile, so I don't know where it came from. I love Cuban food, and the 2 fish entrees were good--not wow, I can't wait to have this again, but decent. We tasted 3 of the appetizers, and they were just OK. Not that tasty, and rather dry. We expected a little more flavor all the way around.
Our server was nice and pleasant, but she didn't know what some of the ingredients were in the specialty drinks, and she asked us to keep our first course silverware, but there was no place to set them down except on the bare wooden table.
It was a pleasant enough experience, but I don't think I would bother to go back.
We had a great evening at Zafra: excellent food, warm service, and lively ambiance. The appetizers were yummy: the Havana sampler. We also enjoyed our main courses: Fricassee de pollo, lechon, and picadillo. The only jarring note were the black beans: underdone and very little flavor! I think Zafra has to improve on this item, since it is a very important item in Cuban cuisine! I nevertheless gave it 5 stars because the rest of the meal was outstanding.
Went to dinner there for a family dinner. First, the service was excellent! The food was AMAZING! We all ordered something different and shared and everything was to die for! The roast pork I could have ate all night!
Don't pass this wonderful restaurant up! You won't be disappointed!
I found this place online through Travelzoo.com, and I decided to check it out the next day. It took my wife and I about an hour to get to, but I must say it was well worth the drive. Highly recommended, just don't plan to have any drinks with a hangover like I did. Couldn't enjoy the selection of rum like I wanted to.
The service was excellent and our waitress was attentive to every need. The Ceviche was one of the best I have ever had, the main courses we had were coked to perfection. Only criticism was that dessert was clearly not given as much attention as the savory dishes and drinks but still yummy.
