We had my step daughters engagement dinner here and we all really enjoyed our selected dinners. The only issue, and our newly trained waiter did the best he could, was he was the ONLY waiter that night. It all worked out, next time we stop in I'm sure he'll be the best waiter in the Z Cafe and Bar.
Very inconsistent service but very sincere and cheerful. Food was really quite good. Dining room is very spacious and not crowded at all. Weirdly there were televisions, which sort of detracted from the fine-dining feel and gave it more of a sports bar ambience. Overall good but not what I would call high end.
We frequently eat at the "Z" and have never been disappointed. Every dish we have tried , and that is many, is always very fresh and perfectly presented and delicious! The restaurant is always very clean and the setting is delightful! The pork chop is wonderful, always cooked to perfection, juicy and flavorful. The burgers are also very good - including the Z burger, vegan burger & topless burger. Tough choice to choose the salad I want - they are all great - so very fresh! Pastas - always yum. My GF sister can always find something she can eat ---- and enjoy, because Z never sacrifices on flavor just to make it gluten free. Z is definitely one of our favorite places!
This is a fairly ordinary restaurant with average food and very attentive service. The food isn't bad by any means; the menu is extensive; and the prices are quite reasonable. I just mean that it's ordinary. If you want a decent lunch at decent prices, go here. I'd go back.
This is a good restaurant but nothing spectacular. Service is very attentive and prices are quite reasonable for the quality. I had tomato soup and grilled cheese, both fine. The small salad was perhaps the best part of the meal, although the bruschetta was also good. I would go back.
My dining companion said she was not very hungry. We shared the Spicy Shrimp appetizer (shrimp have gotten smaller), a side of Vegetables, and the Lobster Ravioli. The Mushroom Cream Sauce for the very tasty Lobster Ravioli was outstanding. Judy was our fabulous wait person, we were there for 3 hours with 3 Martinis and 2 Margaritas. A good time was had by all, Medhi included.
The menu is reminiscent of a Dennys-type place, with appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches and some entrees thrown in. Good service, but the food was just mediocre. Example: vegetarian vegetable soup was tasteless and so spicy as to be inedible, ribs were tender, but had not flavor. Blackened tilapia was the same. The green salad with chicken was better than anything else anyone had.
Not going back.
Good food, very reasonable pricing for the quality. Good fish and a side of plenty of aldente vegetables, not drowning in butter. The Valentine's Day special (which are usually overpriced at most places) was actually a better deal than the regular menu. What a nice change! Service was good. Owner was very nice and accommodating. Not too noisy even though it has hard surfaces and high ceilings.
Overall all my friend and I had an okay experience. They seemed understaffed and overwhelmed with orders. It took 20 mintues before the wait staff offered us water and bread. The wait for our entree and cocktails went about the same. The little staffed they had seemed rushed and not that happy. Every thank you shared by my friend and I was answered with silence.
I was surprised the wait staff didn't return to ask if my friend and I wanted a second round on cocktails when we were done. The bartender who made my peach mojito, by far the best I had in awhile. it Dessert was the highlight of the entire night.
Again, underwhelmed by my dining experience. If staffing is an issue, I hope this gets addressed before the next dine about town week happens. If we go back, it will be for cocktails and dessert.
My wife and I went there to celebrate our 48th anniversary and Oakland Restaurant Week. The food was delicious, with generous portions, the service was excellent, the servers friendly and helpful, and the cost very reasonable. We especially enjoyed the ribs, tilapia, and eggplant parmigiana. The Caesar salad contained anchovies in it like it was supposed to have. The restaurant itself was clean and attractive, yet it felt relaxed and comfortable. We plan to return sometime soon.
For our first time here, we took advantage of Restaurant Week. We had a very nice meal with great cocktails and a nice bottle of wine. Price point was very reasonable and a good value. Service was very friendly. Had the feel of a "neighborhood place." We studied the regular menu and thought that we would like to return and try other things. Can't beat a cocktail hour that lasts from 4 to 10 pm. Would recommend it to others.
Z's Restaurant Week menu was well-thought out and the food was quite good. For us, it was the best use of our time and money during our week of dining out. For $30, each diner got bread and butter, a 4-piece appetizer, a choice of salads, 4 choices of entree (how I love their eggplant parmesan), and a choice between two desserts. We'll be back.
I know I sound like a broken record but this restaurant is consistently perfect with yummy food, efficient friendly service , & great cocktails and extensive wine list. The owner is very involved in the business and the results are obvious . Everything flows smoothly & owner often stops by tables to say hello to everyone. The building is beautiful and is always spotlessly clean. We come monthly for theater , frequently with friends, and often with family . I cannot even think of anything that they could do to improve . They are awesome!
I hadn't been to my neighborhood restaurant in years , but have always enjoyed the food and service. So, brought some out of town guests. Evening was an embarrassing fail. Service was incredibly slow. Actually had to go the bar to get our drinks which had been sitting for at least 10 minutes. Food came out painfully slow as well. And when it came presentation was lacking and my pork chop appeared to have been cooked earlier and reheated. Very disappointing.
It was an especially busy time. There was a huge party, maybe 25-30 people there and we were six with a time restriction. We were served with care and attention to our needs, in spite of this huge party. We were most grateful as we were hosting the dinner.
we decided to try this place on a Saturday night. When we walked up to the door there was a sign saying they were closing at 8pm for a private party. The owner was very friendly and seated us right away and said that they would not kick us out. Our server was nice but not knock your socks off awesome. The food was fresh and tasty and we made the best of it. I would definitely recommend this place for happy hour/bar scene. Perhaps on a regular evening without a group in the private room and an upcoming closing for a private event, I would report a better overall experience. I think it would have been nice to get a phone call as well, since I had a reservation, informing us they were closing early for a private event. Would I return for dinner, probably not, but again would come back for the bar!
