I had been loyal customer of Chef Han's for many years at both Z&Y and SF Chili House. Z&Y made a recent change that ruined Chef Han's signature Peking duck. In 2023, Chef Han highlighted his restaurant's traditional Peking duck being carved into 108 precise slices by expert duck carvers. For years, I considered Chef Han's Peking duck to be the finest and most authentic. Today I was in disbelief to see the duck sliced into thick chunks. Despite the fact that their website still misleadingly displayed photos of expertly sliced authentic duck. The large chunks of skin and meat were cumbersome and unpleasant to eat. There is a reason Peking duck has been sliced in a precise way for centuries. Why change it? I wonder if they are cutting other corners in the 40 hour preparation that Chef Han proudly described in 2023. Chef Han, please let me know if you bring back the traditional duck carving. I will not be coming back for the thick cut duck.

I'm not breaking new ground here—the Peking Duck is incredible. But what's even better is the duck carcass: deep-fried, then sautéed with spices and Sichuan peppercorns. Absolutely off-the-charts delicious. That said, charging $15 extra for it feels a bit much.

The service was excellent and the restaurant was lovely. The food was fantastic for all our the kids and adults. We were surprised at how delicious the veggie dishes were- just not the same ol’. The Peking duck was perfection.

The duck was undeniably fantastic. We also ordered the pork and crab Xiao Long Bao, Yangzhou fried rice, dry sautéed green beans, and cucumber salad. Every dish was excellent. The restaurant itself felt a little shabby. We were seated downstairs in the basement and everything felt a bit dated. Uneven tables, sticky menus. The service was good, but we did have to inquire about our duck order even though I had reserved it when I booked and there seemed to be some confusion about it. All in all a terrific meal and we are excited to go back again.

The Peking Duck (which we had to order in advance) cost $78 and served as an appetizer for the four of us. We each got two thin pancakes and could have used three. We could also have used more of the sliced scallions. We ended up ordering two additional appetizers and three entrees plus five servings of rice; we also drank one glass of wine, three beers, one Coke, and two bottles of bubbly water. The bill included a 10% charge to support the employees (before tip); frankly I think restaurants need to pay a living wage and build the cost into the menu price. Our bill before tip came to $340 so over $100/person with tip.
