About Yuwa Japanese Cuisine (fka Zest Restaurant)
We are excited to announce that Zest Japanese Cuisine will be re-envisioned as “Yuwa Japanese Cuisine,” with our new Executive Chef, Masahiro Omori at the helm. Chef Omori’s grandmother “Yuwa” passionately owned a fish market in Chiba, Japan for over 35 years. Yuwa’s dedication to her craft deeply touched Chef Omori and he lovingly brings her spirit forward with 20 years of professional experience. Look forward to a culinary tour of regional Japanese cuisine and sake utilising the freshest local BC ingredients. Each dish has a story and a wonderful glass of wine or sake to go with it!

Food was absolutely delicious and fresh. We ordered the salmon tartare, Madai carpaccio, wagyu beef dish and two rolls. One had soft shell crab which was very tasty and the other roll was the lobster roll which was pretty decent but didn't blow me away, but very fresh ingredients. The service was great as well. The only negative was they ran out of two dishes we wanted to order. Restaurant opened at 5 and or reservation was at 630, so odd to have run out of a roll by then. The other dish was a specialty dish so they probably had a limited amount of that item.
The fresh sheet was absolutely delicious ! We ordered a few dishes twice because they were so good. The service, attention to detail and ambiance is all 5 star.
The menu is all your favorites done by expert hands using the very best local and import ingredients. We are so excited to go back again and again.

Pricey but exceeded my expectations. Great service. Received thoughtful, discreet attention from staff. Ambiance is chic and tasteful but a little cramped for fine dining. Don't expect a lot of privacy as its a small space. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.
It was a hidden gem as Zest and now, as Yuwa, the restaurant continues to provide outstanding Japanese cuisine - authentic, creative and worth every penny! The sushi is simply exquisite - the freshest fish/seafood and extremely well-balanced (rice/fish proportion). There are plenty of Japanese restaurants in the city and this is one of the best.
One of the best Japanese meal I have had in a while. The sashimi was fresh, and the cooked food (saba fish, udon, tempura...etc) was all delicious. Service was friendly and attentive. We found a small piece of fish bone in our sashimi, and our server Miho took care of it right away. They gave us one complimentary dessert (sake crème brulee), and we ordered the panna cotta as our 2nd dessert. Both were excellent!! As a side note, they only have a few small parking spots in front of the restaurant. Street parking is highly recommended.
"Good" is a fair word to describe Yuwa's sushi quality, but is it overpriced? Oh Yes. The service was good and the waitress was kind, helpful and polite as you would expect. sushi rolls and nigiris were mediocre based on what you would expect from "one of the best" sushi places in the area.
A perfect evening. Impeccable service — attentive, polite, friendly, efficient. Beautifully presented and delicious food. Innovative and different and tasty — lily bulb tempura, chrysanthemum gomae... If we did not like a dish, the server wanted to know why so she could share the comments with the chef for improvement. We weren’t so keen on the Berkshire pork as we thought it was a bit dry. It could have used a sauce. Loved the deep fried sole, sablefish and sushi.
The decor was lovely. Plain with muted colors highlighted with large stunning pots of orchids. Noise level low so we could hear each other and talk without shouting. Quite rare these days to find a quiet restaurant. We were very pleased.
Fantastic re-invention of restaurant formerly known as Zest. Awesome food with authentic Japanese items that you likely won't find elsewhere. Attentive and friendly service ... perfect. Also a great wine and sake list for excellent food pairings. Prices are low considering the quality of the food. Overall superb.
Could not ask for a more perfect night out for a meal.
Reservation via online website was a breeze, I had special requests which the restaurant emailed me back to fulfill the requests. Even phoned me on the same day to confirm my requests and my reservation.
A staff greeted me and my family at the front, offered to take our coats for us, seated us, explained the specials for the evening.
All the staff was very accommodating and friendly. Even the chef was very friendly and acknowledged myself and my son as we watched him make the special gluten-free, off the menu, sushi for my son.
The food came out in sequence so the night rolled out like a movie/play. The chef made my son's meal first so my son would be eating as soon as we sat down.
The meal and night was so perfect that we wished we could go back the next evening!!

Wife's birthday and they remembered. Very polite Japanese staff. The traditional welcome and goodbye in Japanese way.

One thing I wasn't sure about. The wasabi is quite weak and need a lot to get a kick. Other than that it was great.
The price is fair for the quality and quantity.
Overall, my wife and I were a bit disappointed with the Restaurant. We felt like we made a mistake choosing this Restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. We both regretted not having gone to Ajisai or Minami.
For the price we paid we could have eaten more food with same or even higher level of quality at those two other restaurants.
We felt that portions were a bit short, but the biggest problem was speed. We ordered everything at once but it came at a desperate rate. I think from one dish to another we had to wait easily 15 to 20 minutes. It broke the mood of our dinner.
Very much appreciated the detail with the dessert for our anniversary. But despite that, we won't be coming back nor recommending it to our friends and family.
We missed our favourite Japanese restaurant when it closed earlier this year for a Reno and Chef change. We were thrilled to see that although the menu is different the food is all very good. The sushi rolls are the same as the sushi chef has remained the same — they truly are the best in the city!! All the original servers have returned so the service continues to be impecable!
We were not sure what to expect (we were given a gift certificate to this restaurant), other than it had been a regular award-winner under it's old name Zest. The restaurant, however, looked very cozy and inviting with it's new decor.
After looking at the menu, I wasn't sure how to order, as there wasn't the usual "appetizers & entrees" list I'm used to and the pricing didn't reflect that either. I asked our server for some help and she explained that most of the items were "small plates" that could be shared and that you would likely order a multitude of different items.
My wife and I did our best to choose items we thought we would like, but for the most part we were guessing, as we're not familiar with Japanese food.
Nonetheless, the food appeared and tasted very fresh and was beautifully presented, including the plates they were served on.
The owner, Iori, came around was happy to chat with my wife and I and answer all sorts of questions we had.
All-in-all, it was a very good experience, but we would have benefited by going with someone who is more familiar with Japanese dishes.
