I have thought very carefully about this review. I am a huge fan of Andrew Pern. First experience was turning up at The Star, some years ago, having no idea of its popularity, walking in on a Sunday lunchtime and getting the last table. The service was exemplary, the food sublime and we had the best Sunday roast ever. We live in York and Mr P’s curious tavern was fun and the food was inventive, delicious and, again, wonderful staff. We were sad when it closed. A big birthday for me and The Star in York was my choice. Such a disappointment. Truly awful food and indifferent service. Hugely disappointing but did not negatively review as sometimes that happens. On to the Refectory York. First experience was a Sunday lunch some time ago. Great service. Restaurant packed out. We were eating late in the afternoon. Our meal arrived and we had to send it back. However when the second meal arrived it was just delicious. Again, these things happen so we reviewed positively. On to the Refectory yesterday. We were taking friends, who had travelled from London for a birthday lunch. Seriously don’t know where to start. We were a table of four and our husbands were joining us so we arrived first. It was quite busy outside but the bar and restaurant were empty. We arrived and were asked if we wanted a drink at the bar or outside. We opted for the bar. No customers there but a member of staff behind the bar singing to the playlist. Dirty glasses in front of us.He ignored us as did two other staff members, We sat down and were ignored for a full five minutes. No eye contact. Nothing. After 5/7 minutes the greeter who had met us came and took our drinks order. It felt so cold and uncaring. We almost left. I wish we had. Food was indifferent. Crab vol au vent ok. Rest just ok. Nothing to complain about but as we were treating our friends we didn’t want to make a fuss. Service so odd. Three different people not even remotely invested in serving us. It was very disappointing.

Very relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, food was very good, the French fries were excellent, a small detail that made a big difference. I would look forward to going again.

We chose the Refectory for our Elopement lunch and we were not disappointed! Asolutely superb cuisine complimented by outstanding service and surroundings. The taste and presentation of our chosen dishes was on another level completely and we received such a friendly and genuine welcome by the staff alongside complimentary drinks and a dessert, which we were not expecting at all. Just a wonderful experience in such an historic venue. Highly recommend!

Outstanding!! This restaurant was a highlight of out York trip. I really don’t know how they could improve. Everything was cooked to perfection. The two Jamie’s working were very well trained.

Food very fresh, My starter was prawns and rice very filling. When guests at another table arrived for their booking it seemed our table didn't receive as much attention. The other table had ordered champagne etc . I just felt like we were the poor realtions
