A brilliant new restaurant experience in York situated in the Minster area of the city. The food was really excellent and the historic surroundings of the old Minster School are very atmospheric.

Really disappointed with the whole dining experience. Arrived at the restaurant, escorted to a table after about 8 minutes of standing by an open door. Not a great start. Finally escorted to a table in the main dining hall, beautiful space and lovely and warm. Ordered pheasant and the steak. Pheasant was very dry with a salty emulsion covering part of the dish. It should have been moist and flavoursome, it was not. The steak was returned to the kitchen as it was way over cooked, I asked for medium rare. I didn’t make a scene, just quietly advised the waitress that it was over cooked. I didn’t even add that the steak I had tried was tasteless. The manager came over and said the steak had been cooked to medium rare and perhaps it was the lighting that made it look over cooked. I know my steak and I know what medium rare should look and taste like. The new steak arrived and it was very fatty! Almost a third was fat. The steak though was medium rare and quite tasty. It was accompanied by an extremely salty sauce, which was over seasoned and quite unpleasant. I wondered whether someone had added an extra helping of salt. Who knows! Plates collected and the waitress noted the fat left on the plate. We asked for the bill and the manager had deducted 10% from the bill. This was a nice gesture. Observations from the evening: The service is not as good as it should be for a restaurant charging what they are. The kitchen is right next to the seating area, you can hear everything. Manager needs to work on his interactions with customers. I should not be made to feel that I am mistaken. I’m very well versed in ordering a medium rare steak thank you. Someone needs to be at the open front door to greet customers in a timely manner. Would I go again, no. Would I recommend the restaurant, unfortunately not. The food/ service simply is not good enough.

The welcome was good, the venue is lovely and the atmosphere great. Wonderful setting. Menu was a good selection. The pork cheeks starter was interesting but the cheeks were smothered with cheese and potato whip which masked the pork cheeks. Main course presentation was super. Out of all the meals the duck was mediocre. Small slivers of duck breast and the confit duck pasty had no flavour. The dripping potato fondant was superb. Two of the desserts being the sundae was far from a sundae with more cream and jam rather than a good Yorkshire ice cream but was poor. The fondant looked good but the taste far from it. The chocolate used was not the quality stated and it was swimming in what seemed tinned cherries. The small dessert pieces were lovely and they did prepare a birthday plate. The beverage menu is good, but it is a shame that the wine list cannot supply vintages with the wines as the years do make a difference in the wines. For a half term period it was quieter than i expected. All in all I was expecting far more than what I paid. Also to let you know service charge is added onto the bill at 12.5% so the drive is more large city style. The property has so much potential but it is missing some key leads which would make it a better choice to dine. It is not a venue that I would rush back to or advise others to try.

Lovely setting, great tasting menu, including vegetarian option. Good service initially, then poor. We were left waiting a long time for coffee and sweets, which came separately, so could not be enjoyed together. Long wait to pay; in the end we just went to the till. Staff need a little more training.

We had been recommended this restaurant so was really looking forward to going , however My son’s meal came out dry & overcooked . My meal was ok but came out with black spots on the chips no a massive thing but expect better for a restaurant of this calibre . They did apologise & said they hoped to do better next time .

My sisters, Mother and I went for my Mums birthday and travelled from Bournemouth and we were not disappointed. We all had the 7 course tasting menu alongside a few cocktails and several bottles of wine and the whole experience was fabulous! All the staff went above and beyond to make sure we all were having an amazing time. They were all very knowledgeable about the food and drink, also attentive but not too much as you can sometimes get in nicer places. It was all just perfect - 10/10. The architecture of the building is awe inspiring, as well as the decor ( and toilets ) that compliments the Victorian style. I loved every bit of this experience and the 7 course tasting menu was £45pp which is an amazing price for what you get! They do offer a wine pairing with the menu for £40pp but personally I only like dry wine so didn’t opt for this, but would definitely be worth it for people who have a taste for most wines. Thank you to all the staff for making our last night in York an amazing unforgettable one x

The best Sunday roast we've had in years. I had pheasant & hubby had beef. Very generous portions, lots of sides & huge Yorkshire puddings! Iconic location beside the Minster. Friendly staff. Good value. Highly recommend!

Visited for a triple birthday event. The food and the service were amazing. The only criticism is that the restaurant was busy and it was very loud. It was difficult to hear conversation around the table, causing increased volume to be heard that carded to the problem. Maybe the acoustics of the room enhanced the volume levels?? Will absolutely return as we would like to experience the lunch menu.

Our experience didn’t start well as there was a queue at the front desk with no sign of any staff. Once we found someone working in the bar his opening gambit was, ‘Got a table booked?’. Not overly welcoming! The lady who took our order and who looked after us was lovely however so things improved. The menu was perhaps not as diverse as I might have hoped but when the food arrived it was hot and tasty (although my chicken Wellington was slightly dry). The decor and mood in the restaurant was warm and relaxed. We were seated next to a large, noisy table but that is standard in York on a Saturday night! All in all, a pleasant night which improved after a poor start.
